The breath ghosting Haruki’s neck travels up to his ear, breaking goosebumps on its wake. Akihiko smells like gasoline and rain. A fragrance Haruki would like to label ‘home’, as twisted as it sounds.

It’s late. The usual midnight rush is over, taking all overworked employees to bed rest. Yet, it’s still too early for birds to sing–too early for Haruki’s shift to end.

“You know I can’t, angel.” Akihiko’s voice is barely above a whisper, that stupid pet name uttered with so much care that Haruki almost raises the white flag up in the air. Almost.

“Please.”

“Mafuyu?” Haruki looked down and saw Kedama with him. Haruki opened the door wider to let the two in.

He took to his natural place in the apartment: on the living room’s table. In only a few minutes, the apartment looked like whenever Akihiko’s practicing and composing music; papers everywhere, music sheets on the couch, the trusty mug full of pens on the table.

It gave Haruki a comfort and happiness he didn’t know he missed. Having Mafuyu here, mumbling and humming, strumming and pausing to write lyrics, Kedama barking and playing by his legs, soothed Haruki.

“That’s very sweet of him. What are your plans for the day?”

His mother knew he treated his birthday like any other day, but Akihiko told her anyway.  He talked about not wanting to miss his classes, but the band was going to have a small birthday party during their practice session that afternoon.  He was halfway through going through what he and Haruki were doing that Saturday, confused when he heard a loud voice over the line.

“Mom, where are you?”

“I’m at the hospital,” she answered.

“Why?” Akihiko asked, perplexed when she sighed shakily.

“I’m sorry I didn’t get your input, but there’s a class that’s required for my major at the same time and I didn't want to miss the last spot,” Akihiko explained, “I had to switch my comp class to later in the afternoon to get into the only recital section.”

“I understand, but even a quick text is better than being blindsided by it,” Haruki said.

“I’m sorry, Haru,” he said, tugging his hand and kissing him, “I know better for next time.”

“Want to grab some lunch before the next class?” Haruki asked.

“I have to head to the bookstore,” Akihiko said.

“Would you like some company?” he questioned.

Opening his eyes slightly, Haruki saw Akihiko looming over him, a soft smile on his lips.  His eyes adjusted and he registered the darkness in the room.  Not appreciating being woken up in the middle of the night, Haruki scowled at his boyfriend.

“Why in the hell are you waking me up at…” Haruki said, pausing to check the time on his phone, “It’s almost six.  What’s so important at six in the morning?”

“What do you mean weekend?” Uenoyama inquired.
