A deep sigh slips past Giukâs lips unwanted. At least by now most of the others from his unit have left, done packing and eager to go home. Those still littering around are mostly just those who have nothing to return to or the most passionate of them, hoping that a miracle will happen and the extraterrestrials that remained in hiding this whole time will come out now just for them.Â
He canât say he wouldnât be pleased himself if he happened to be the chosen one, but his reason for dragging his feet is a little more down to Earth.Â
âStill around, partner?â comes your voice.Â
His head whips around, a smile forming on his lips at the speed of light. He forces himself to remain calm instead of pulling you into a hug like his body is screaming at him to do. Only a few hours are left - who can blame him if heâs a little out of it and reckless?
âYou donât look like youâre in a rush to leave either,â he comments instead, leaning against the back of the truck. He hopes he looks as nonchalant as he wants to.Â
âI was thinking about some last minute exploring,â you chuckle, looking at him with a small smirk on your face, âIf you want to join me. But all credit would be mine, Iâm warning you.â
âSure,â he shrugs in an attempt to hide his eagerness.
His steps are fast, though, because as cute as it is to watch you get frustrated when you have to walk at a slower pace, he wants you to be comfortable. And the faster you both walk, the faster youâll get away from everyone.Â
And soon enough, itâs only you two, the sky, and the silence of the night. Should he try to hold your hand? Would it be too soon? Giuk knows heâd try if he wasnât getting back on the road tonight. He takes a deep breath of the chilly air and pulls off his jacket to drape it over you. Winter's coming, itâs the first time you've met at such a time. He wonders if maybe you could see the first snow together.
âThink weâll get paired up next time too?â you hum.
How many times has it been? Five? Six? He doesnât really remember, even though at some point each time meant another frustrating end and sleepless night over what couldâve been.
âWhy? Are you getting sick of me?â he teases. Though the possibility of you saying yes does cross his mind and he regrets asking.
âNot at all,â you huff, bumping your shoulder against his. Your voice drops lower. âJust hoping weâll get more time at the next location.â
It feels like the ground drops from below his feet. Like something is pulling Giuk up, making him levitate in the air. He risks a quick glance at you. You donât meet his eyes, but youâre worrying your lip between your teeth. A habit that you developed recently. Or did he only just notice? Or maybe, did you only now get a reason to be nervous around him?Â
âThat would be nice,â he admits softly, âReally nice.â
Your fingers brush against his, yet you donât take his hand. But itâs enough for now. Enough of a reassurance that the only thing between you and him is time.Â
At least your units usually work together. You should be able to meet at the next location too.
âDo you think the aliens are only sticking around to see if we end up together?â you laugh. And, taken aback by your bluntness and the ridiculousness of the idea, Giuk has to laugh too.
âI hope theyâre rooting for us.â

The bell above the door rings, prompting you to look up from wiping down the counter. As much as the sound usually annoys you, this time you will give it a pass if only because of whoâs arrived. Your eyes barely meet but heâs already turning his face away. Cute.Â
Itâs not too long since he first visited and then became a regular - for a very obvious reason, might you add. It flatters you, really. Even if itâs annoying that heâs so obvious that all your coworkers know. Like just now, when you also look away to keep working on the stubborn stain, and you get a subtle nudge from one of them. You roll your eyes.Â
âHeâs looking at you. I mean heâs pretending to look at the menu, but heâs not,â the culprit whispers your way. Not like you canât feel eyes on you.
âI bet heâs gonna order the same thing as always. Anyway, did you figure out what you're gonna do?â
The last time the cute guy, Giuk (unless heâs giving a fake name for his orders), visited he left his number on the receipt. Then crossed it out to the point it became illegible. Then wrote his instagram handle right underneath, just to cross it out too - he just didnât do that good of a job. Good enough that you were not able to find him due to the missing letters, though.Â
And sure, maybe if you were overthinking it you could persuade yourself that he wasnât leaving his number for you. For someone else, maybe? But then again you were the only person he kept looking at - and thatâs including the friends he usually comes in with. Flattering, very flattering. You wish he cut it with the slow burn, though.
âIâm gonna scam him,â you smirk at your coworker.Â
Before he can question you further, though, the customers make a move. The friend orders first and you swear he gives your victim a meaningful look before walking off to the side to wait for his drink. Then your cute guy steps up.
âHello,â he greets as usual, fiddling the phone in his hand. As expected, he orders the same as usual. You almost want to call him out. While youâre ringing him up, he opens and closes his mouth a couple times, like he wants to say something. He never does, though, so you pretend to make a mistake to have an excuse to put his order in again and give him a chance to try one more time. He doesnât, even if you give him a curious look. He looks away. You canât help but think he looks disappointed.
âYou know thereâs this promo event going on,â you say nonchalantly, the script well-rehearsed in your head, âIf you follow the cafe on instagram thereâs a small sale on your order. Unless youâre already following.â
âOh, Iâm not, wait a minute.âÂ
Itâs adorable, the way Giuk jumps at the opportunity and also keeps looking at you as if youâre gonna walk away if he takes too long - and not even acknowledging you havenât said anything to his friend. He shows you his screen as he taps the follow button and smiles warmly when you thank him.Â
âNo, thank you,â he hesitates for a second, âDo you have to follow the page too since youâre working here?â
Mentally you raise an eyebrow at that. Does he want to play the same game youâre about to? If so, maybe you should put your plan on hold a little⊠No. Heâd just drag it out anyway.
âWe donât but most of us do,â you shrug, âItâs a good way to get reminders about the news.â
He nods, again seemingly trying to find words while you put the employee discount on his order (nobody will know anyway) and he has to pay. He lingers for a bit longer when everything is done and carefully takes the receipt from you.Â
Your coworker is already done with both of their orders in the meantime and readily hands them over, effectively chasing him away, before crowding you as you hide to pull out your phone.
âExplain?â he prompts before invading your personal space.
âRemember how I couldnât find him from that scribble? I should be able to guess it now if I see that name-â Bingo. But he really needs to work on his handwriting.Â
âOh?â heâs already leaning over your shoulder to see.Â
The profile is private but how many people still wear leopard print and have such pretty earrings? Here goes nothing, you think as you press the follow button and promptly hide the phone back into your pocket. You return to your tasks as if nothing happened, your nosy coworker whining behind you. Probably for the first time, itâs you nervously checking on the crushing guy.Â
Heâs already on his phone and then, all of a sudden, he freezes. After a beat he looks up, eyes wide and mouth agape. You send him a sheepish smile that quickly grows when you see Giuk brighten up. You feel your phone vibrate and take it out. As expected, thereâs a request waiting for you too. As soon as you accept it, he sends the first message.
You really hope heâs less shy over texts or your poor heart wonât handle it.

finding a cat on your back step is not what you expected from this morning. last night you had heard some rustling in the backyard but told yourself it was just the wind. turns out it was a tabby cat. he was really fluffy, with short legs and big round eyes. you were sort of concerned when you noticed one of his ears was dyed a vibrant teal colour, you thought maybe a group of kids had tried dying his fur but he seemed healthy other than being dehydrated and starving.
luckily you kept some cat food on hand for strays and he seemed to really appreciate a proper meal and a warm place to sleep. he slept peacefully by your side on the couch while you watched TV. an emergency alert popped up on your TV while you were watching. âthis message is to alert city residents that a tabby cat hybrid went missing on January 1st, 2022.â the message switched from the automated voice to a distressed womanâs voice. âhis name is Giuk, he has a teal streak in his blond hair and when heâs in cat form the teal streak translates to his ear. he is very precious to us, if you find him please call (xxx) xxx-xxx.â the message ended abruptly.
you looked beside you at the cat you had taken in. his big eyes looked back at you, assessing your reaction to the message. âGiuk?â you asked quietly. the cat blinked at you, his form changing before your eyes. âyes.â he mumbled. âwhy were you on my back step?â you asked, Giuk sighed. âi ran away. the family i was with werenât very nice to me and i couldnât take it anymore. i donât know why i ended up in your backyard, i was hungry and tired and your house smelled good⊠please donât turn me in, i donât want to go back there! iâll do anything, iâll leave and i wonât come back-â he stopped mid sentence, tears rolling down his cheeks. you cooed gently at him, âitâs okay, i wonât turn you in. you can stay here until i figure out what to do. okay?â you wiped away his tears with your thumb, he nodded wordlessly.
during the next couple of days you struggled to figure out what to do, you could appeal to the hybrid protection program. but you had no evidence of abuse or mistreatment and Giuk wouldnât tell you anything about his past. at this rate you were worried you would have to either leave the city with him or turn him in. besides the fact that you were essentially hiding someoneâs âpropertyâ (you hated calling a living being property but that is how the law would see it), you got along really well with Giuk. he was sweet, cute and extremely cuddly. you wondered how anyone could mistreat such a kind hybrid.
one day when Giuk was laying with his head in your lap, you noticed a scar on his neck. when you looked closer you saw it was actually a brand. âproperty of the Smith familyâ stretched in tiny letters along the base of Giukâs neck. you ran your finger gently over where the letters marred his skin. he flinched slightly, his eyes focusing intently on you. he was now much more comfortable with you, he liked being by your side and he knew he wouldnât be able to be by your side if he didnât tell you about his past.
so the second your eyes met his after staring at the scar on his neck, everything came tumbling out like a waterfall. in another life he could have been a rapper (đ). your heart broke for Giuk, he had been through so much. the abuse he had suffered was evident by the scars that littered his delicate skin. âthank you for trusting me Giukie, iâm going to keep you safe okay? nothing bad is going to happen.â you brushed your fingers through his hair, Giuk smiled and his nose scrunched. you cooed at him and pinched his cheeks.
you appealed to the hybrid protection program, and they agreed that Giuk had been mistreated. his previous âfamilyâ was investigated and banned from having any more hybrids in the future. but there was still one more obstacle in your way; you had to adopt Giuk. because of his background and your hiding him, the HPP (hybrid protection program) was making you jump through several hoops to adopt Giuk. first there was the criminal record check, then the mental health assessment, then the house check and finally several weeks worth of hybrid care classes.
all the while the HPP held Giuk in their facility and refused to let you see him. when you had met all of their requirements you were allowed to pick Giuk up and take him home. when you arrived at the HPPâs facility, he was handed to you in a cat career. inside he was fast asleep. Giukâs handler explained that he hadnât let anyone near him since he was brought to them, he stayed in cat form and scratched anyone who came close to him. âwe thought it would be best for him to be âasleepâ when you picked him up.â the man explained. you glared at his back as he walked away.peeking into the carrying case you sighed at Giukâs disheveled state. on the way home you glanced at his carrier every once in a while. at home you let him sleep off the anesthesia while making supper. when he finally emerged from his room, he was confused but also excited to be home. ây/n!! i thought they would never let me come home, it felt like forever!â Giuk pouted at you, although his arms wrapped tightly around your waist. you giggled quietly, âdid you really think i wouldnât break in there and save you if i had to?â you asked quietly, nose buried in his neck. âi knew you would come for me, i just had to wait.â he whispered into your hair. you smiled, this is home.
I told you we canât keep meeting like this, you bark at him. It sounds more like youâre begging him to understand than chastising him for not listening to you. Again. You lost count of how many times this happened. If youâre completely honest with yourself, which you are not, youâre grateful he keeps trying. And I told you to stop wanting me if you want me to leave you alone, he growls back, as frustrated as you are. You know youâre both hurting - each other and your own selves. It would be easier if Giuk could get over his saviour complex and if you accepted that youâre not beyond saving. If you allowed yourself to lower the walls and give him a chance. He never betrayed you, the only person in your life. What are you so afraid of? Everyone is allowed to fuck up, including him. So why do you want to keep in pure and faultless, even this trailing after you is nothing more than him tending to your needs - however much you deny it. Youâre being unfair, you sigh, hoping he wonât hear. He does. Because heâs closer than you noticed. And youâre unreasonable, he suddenly turns you around with his hand on your shoulder, Stop running away. I told you Iâm fine staying friends. Just stop being a coward. But see thatâs the thing - you wouldnât be fine with it. You canât do more, though. You absolutely canât do less, or stay the way it is. Running and pushing him away is all you have. Yet he makes you stay, yet he follows. You wonder when heâll get tired.
