Gasp! Turns out you can disable spell check in any Lion text field (when it's active) under Edit > Spelling and Grammar.
This was driving me batshit crazy writing commit messages in GitX, causing all sorts of "corrections" on my blathering commits, often riddled with techtastic abbreviations that OS X tried desperately to convert to English.
It only took me about a year to look for this option.

I was using GitX(L) for a long time, but the development got stale, I was making builds from the latest sources from time to time, but not anymore. Welcome GitX-dev, it looks quite nice and the development seem to be going strong. There are tons of small additions here and there, and this is my tool of the trade now.
Just built from the sources. Of course it is unsigned so your will have to right-click and open to bypass Gatekeeper.
