Gilbert Perreault didn’t take long to make history.

In the Buffalo Sabres’ very first NHL game in 1970, the rookie scored his first career goal, a power-play game-winner that also became the first of its kind in franchise history.

Buffalo beat Pittsburgh 2-1 that night, thanks in part to Roger Crozier’s stellar goaltending but it was clear early who the star would be.

Perreault went on to score 512 goals and win the Calder Trophy that season, launching a Hall of Fame career and giving Sabres fans a legend from day one.

The Buffalo Sabres’ legendary trio, Gilbert Perreault, Rick Martin, and Rene Robert, combined for nine or more points six different times during the 1975-76 season. Their biggest outburst came on March 4, 1976, with a 13-point explosion in a 6–3 win over Chicago.

Even in a wild 14–2 rout of Washington, they posted “only” nine points because Robert didn’t play. Another standout performance came in a 4–2 win over Toronto, where the trio combined for all four goals and ten total points.

On opening night of the 1974-75 NHL season, Gilbert Perreault reminded everyone why he was one of hockey’s most electrifying players. With three goals and two assists, he led the Buffalo Sabres to a 9-5 rout of the Boston Bruins. The French Connection was in full flight, rookie Danny Gare scored just 18 seconds into his debut, and Buffalo’s offense looked unstoppable.

On March 9, 1986, Gilbert Perreault became just the 12th player in NHL history to reach 500 goals. The Buffalo Sabres legend scored against Alain Chevrier of the New Jersey Devils in front of an ecstatic home crowd at the Aud. Perreault finished his career with 512 goals, all with Buffalo, and remains one of hockey’s most graceful and loyal stars. 🏒💛💙
