Should I continue Watching...?
Violet Evergarden is a beautiful novel and I whole heartedly enjoyed the story. For all the controversial aspects the anime has, the novel handled gracefully and has it’s differences.
The animation is undeniably beautiful and the main plot line doesn’t stray too far off from the original novel, Violet’s emotional growth, but it lacks so much compared to the novel. Still, I enjoyed it as much as I could, and greatly anticipated the moment when [SPOILER] Gilbert’s survival is revealed. It explained his sacrifice as not only an act of love for Violet, but also as someone hoping for Violet’s future to be bright. He regretted taking her to the warzone, raising her in an enviroment so violent, and not realizing that she wasn’t violent unless commanded or attacked. But with Ep.12 covering the train scene...in a very very different way, I’ve lost hope. I think they might’ve truly killed him off in the Anime. Gilbert’s survival isn’t solely about the reuinion between him and Violet, but the sacrafice he made in hopes of improving Violet’s life. He feigned his own death to prevent Violet from returning to the army. And he did so with every intent of never seeing her again, despite his feelings for her. He never made any romantic advancements, he never pressured her, and his show of love was sending her off to save her life and to later improve her life.
Ep.12 has really stomped all over my anticipations.
