Spoilers under the cut for both Project Hail Mary and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
(The following scene is specific to the Project Hail Mary movie. I'm not sure if it was in the book, though the ending of the book is not substantially different.)
When Rocky told Ryland Grace that the Eridians have repaired Grace's ship and Grace can travel back to Earth, Grace responded "I'll think about it". Rocky replied: "Think about it for a very long time."
So it seems that Rocky does not want Grace to leave, but he puts Grace's wellbeing above his feelings and prepares to help him go back to Earth if he wants to.
Aaaand….
For me, everything circles back to my blorbos from Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell - the title characters. Thus, a crazy crossover materialized in my mind. The ending for Rocky and Grace is kind of similar as for Strange and Norrell - both pairs end up inseparable in a strange, artificial milieu, with one of them trapped in the other's native environment. (I realize it's a bit of a stretch, and will skip over the obvious differences.) In both pairs, one of them had good reasons to go back to his previous life, but was ambivalent about it and less inclined to do so as time went by; whereas the other member of the pair was very motivated to have his friend stay, but worked alongside with the friend to free him. Even if it went against his feelings.
