The word for “poison” in German is “gift,” it’s proto-Germanic origins are a semantic loan from Latin and Greek words for “something given or dosage” dosis/dósis. In English the word gift refers to a “present” or a special talent seen as a blessing. The Scandinavian languages also use the word gift to refer to both poison and marriage. We see this in English today in the bride being “given” away.
