@ Gifmakers pls make sure your subtitles are easy to read !
If you have to fit the text on two lines, take the time to break it at the proper place so the lines are even & the text is easy to read. look into subtitles guidelines! (a quick duckduckgo search brings up the BBC subtitles guidelines, they're a good place to start!)
Tho, do take some stuff with a grain of salt as we are making subtitles for a looping short clip, so we do have more time to read the text than subtitles in films/tv/videos. (but keeping them short enough and having them appear for a minimum duration is the minimum requirements).
The lines should be approximately the same length as it is easier on the eyes. With different length of lines, it's harder for the eyes to find the beginning of the second line, so it takes that much longer to understand the subtitle. So the lines should be balanced.
Break the sentences in ways that are easy to understand. Go for a place that'll break it into 2 or 3 balanced lines, but make sure to :
break before these sort of words : the, and, I, you, she, they, he, to
break off after a comma, not before the word followed by a comma
don't break in the middle of dates either, or numbers
Examples:
For this one, it's common practice to break the lines when the speaker is a different person, but here, the second line would have been much shorter than the first, making it look unbalanced. since the gif is on loop, we can see the two people speaking, so it's fine to keep it on the same line with a different color.
For this one, it's the same speaker speaking but! his line of dialog is a tad long:
I have seen gifs where people would have broken it off like so:
She's in a really bad way. She's... I don't even think she's
gonna make it. I'm...
But it's really not nice visually as it is unbalanced + the readibility is shit.
Here's a good example of having broken it off weirdly for the sake of balance. It should have been :
I never thought I'd ever get
to call you my own.
or
I never thought I'd ever get to call you my own.
And then, when I did...
The first one has to lose a part of the dialog I didn't want to lose, the second one is too unbalanced for my taste. So I broke my own rule and broke it off after the "to" 'cause
I never thought I'd ever get
to call you my own. And then, when I did...
just felt too unbalanced with a long-ish sentence broken quite evenly and the second sentence looking like it shouldn't be there.

endless list of movies that i love: sense and sensibility (1995)
can the soul really be satisfied with such polite affections? to love is to burn - to be on fire, like juliet or guinevere or eloise. [they made rather pathetic ends, dear.] pathetic? to die for love? how can you say so? what could be more glorious?
