âAm I pretty?â The guy asked again.
Maybe the guy was just flirting with him? Shiroâs gaze caught on his eyes, so captivating and expressive⌠He nodded. âYeah. You are.â He answered honestly.
Something about the smile in his eyes changed, becoming more sinister. The man reached up and unhooked one of the loops of his surgical mask from around his ear. âHow about now?â He asked, pulling the mask away.
Sudden cold doused Shiro like ice-water flooding his veins. The manâs mouth was slit to either side of his lips, scars stretching up his cheeks and practically to his ears. It was a shock, yes, but what really made his heart stutter with fear was remembering his earlier question; am I pretty? His grandparents had told him stories as a child about yĹkai and yĹŤrei -- Japanese demons and ghosts -- and though he hadnât thought about those stories in a long time, they suddenly came back to him.
There was a kuchisake-onna standing in front of him, and had just asked him the dreaded question. Shiro knew the stories -- saying no would get him killed, but saying yes would earn him a matching scar. There was no good answer.

The ghost of what Shiro's lost haunts him. Keith tries to find a way home.
âShiro?â someone asks, and later he wonât remember who, but heâll remember his own stillness, like maybe if he didnât breathe or speak or move, time would stop moving against him.
He imagines it: the cruiserâs scattered pieces pulling in, piecing itself back together, the net of purple light coalescing, and the Galra fighter there, intact and safe. Keithâ
âShiro?â someone asks again.

Death caught Keith quickly. So quickly, in fact, that he hadnât even realized what had happened to him until heâd woken to the sound of police sirens and the sight of his body being carted away in a black body bag. There had to be some sick cosmic joke in there somewhere about how his life had been ended nearly exactly when heâd finally decided to start living. Even more sickly comical about the whole ordeal was that he was now stuck forever at the age of 23 in a hand cut crop top that read:
Flower Sniffin
Kitty Pettin
Baby Kissin
Corporate Rock Whores
He was certain there was some sort of symbolism to be found in the Nirvana shirt that life, death and every other philosophical concept in between just could not resist. Maybe if he wasnât dead, he would have even found the humor. Be that as it may, he found himself on the business end of a panic attack. At least, as much of a panic attack as he could have when he didnât even need to breathe anymore.Â
