đ Story tag đ Part 1 đ Part 2 đPart 3đPart 4
He considers walking back to the office, but dismisses it as a coward's attitude. Edwin may not be the strongest fighter there is, but he does pride himself on his ability to face the world as it is rather than as he wishes it were. The current situation with Charles is untenable, and the only way to resolve this, one way or another is for them to talk it through. With that in mind, Edwin takes a deep breath and phases into a furniture shop to jump through the nearest mirror he can find.
The office is quiet when he steps in. There is a sort of stillness to the air that Edwin hopes he is simply imagining, the sort that settles at the back of his neck like the fetid breath of a hell hound and brings all sorts of questions to Edwin's mind. The first of them is: where is Charles? There is no trace of him Edwin can see or hear. Crystal was on her way up when Edwin panicked, is it possible she took Charles out for some sort of conversation? If so, whether she will take Charles' or Edwin's side is something of a toss up, and not one Edwin cares to resolve today.
He must talk to Charles, though. Yes, he is distraught by the turn of events and can admit, if only to himself, that his heart still bleeds just to think of what he saw earlier. But the longer he stares at the empty office, the longer he is left to wonder whether Charles will even be willing to hear him out, the more Edwin realizes he will gladly take the wound if it means keeping Charles by his side. He will make peace with his friend's new relationship. He will endeavour to be civil to the the Cat King, and he will keep his darker thoughts to himself forever, just so long as he can--
Someone sniffles.
The sound is so faint it is almost a miracle Edwin hears it over the hum of traffic creeping in through the window, but it makes Edwin's heart triple its size with hope anyway.
aha! plenty of hits for this one, but i'll go ahead and leave you with another bit from the vampire sequel @dear-monday and i have been cooking up:
The handyman rattles off a number, and Edwin is in the middle of writing down the correct amount when he interrupts, âSay, is your mate alright?â
âWhat?â Edwin says, his head flying up. His eyes immediately snap to Charles, whoâs still sitting there reading, but his fingers are white where they have the book in a death grip, and there are visible tremors wracking his entire frame. He looks about two seconds away from having a meltdown.
âHere you are, thank you very much for your services, now have a nice evening,â Edwin says all in a rush, stuffing the cheque into his hands and all but pushing him out of the room. Once the door has closed shut behind him, Edwin explodes into motion, pulling Charles up out of his seat and into a tight hug.
âAre you alright, darling? What is it?â he asks, burying his nose into Charlesâ hair and subtly inhaling his scent.
#25: "What have you done now?" for the ship of your choice?

thank you so much to @spilledbutter for looking over this for me! <3
Long after all the other residents of Kaer Morhen have gone to bed, soft hands come to touch Geraltâs shoulders, stirring him from his unrestful sleep. He jolts upright, sitting straight in his chair; the grip on his shoulders does not slip. Soft, strong hands then. He closes his tired eyes as the laboratory around them sways. When he speaks, the rumble rises from deep in his chest: âYen?â
A broken off laugh, and not the voice he was expecting. âNo. Not Yen, Iâm afraid. Sorry to disappoint.â
âJaskier,â Geralt corrects. The last thing he remembers is bidding goodnight to his brothers as they stumbled off to their rooms, conspiring to pull some awful prank on CoĂ«n. Geralt should probably get up to warn the poor Griffin about whatever Lambert and Eskel intend to do.Â
Then again, the damage has already been done. His eyelids flutter shut once more, and he slides back forward, seeking the comfort of the solid table as a balm for his aching temple.
Jaskier, who Geralt honestly forgot was in the room, holds him up. Very strong hands. Geralt exhales, and with his trembling breath and tired throat, the noise comes out as a whimper. He reclines into Jaskierâs arms, who receives him with surprising stability and even brushes the sweaty hair from his forehead. âDarling,â croons the bard.
Geraltâs breath slows, caught in the tide of Jaskierâs expanding lungs and chest but buoyed by his thick arms. The bench underneath him could crumble to sand, and Geralt thinks Jaskier could still hold him here. The strength is even more impressive given that Geralt is practically dead weight right now.
Each word is a soft puff of air tickling the back of Geraltâs pink ears as Jaskier continues, slow and quiet and for once not amused at all, âWhat have you done now?â
Good question. Geralt, suddenly panicked that heâs been caught falling asleep in a puddle of his own sick, opens his eyesâ but the laboratory table is thankfully only cluttered with the souvenirs from his night. Emptied bottles stacked against each other and long-forgotten cups tower over small plates of pits and crusts. The real culprit, Eskel, has already fled the scene, but he left behind the remnants of his poison in a few of the bottles. Geralt canât even remember where he said heâd found the damned stuff, let alone what type of liquor it was. But he had warned them of its potency, and Geralt and Lambert, determined men of science that they were, had been desperate to test out the claim.
He struggles to piece together a good answer for Jaskier. Even though the bard has stunk like a tavern since they first ran into each other again, Geralt still feels embarrassed as he decides how to explain his night. Maybe if he tells him they were mourning, Jaskier will have more sympathy; except they werenât drinking away their grief, not specifically. Witchers are always mourning, of course, but⊠it had been a good night. Right up until he passed out alone and stone cold drunk in the cold stone basement.
Geralt supposes he should be lucky it was Jaskier and not Ciri who found him, or Yennefer; heâs sure the sorceress would have some choice words for him. Jaskier should have some choice words for him. A few decades ago, if Geralt had brought the bard to Kaer Morhen and had a party without him, Jaskier would have given him hell for the lack of an invitation. But now he doesnât complain even a little, just gently working his fingers through Geraltâs hair.
âWhy arenât you mad at me?â The words spill out before Geralt can catch them and cork them. He twists in his old friendâs grip, suddenly desperate to steal a glimpse of Jaskierâs expression, and in the process his elbow knocks a bottle off the table. It bounces away without shattering but the sound is enough to make both witcher and bard jump, and Jaskierâs strong, soft hands release Geralt.
A little pinkâ his heart is racing, Geraltâs witcher senses supplyâ and wide-eyed, Jaskier says, âWhat?â
âWhy are you down here,â Geralt mutters, unwilling to repeat himself. It was a stupid question anyway; Jaskier is mad at him. The bard hasnât said as much, not since Geralt picked him up from his jail cell. But even though witchers have a famed ineptitude for emotions, it would take the obliviousness of a rock troll to see past Jaskierâs anger. His fury, and heartbreak, are woven into himâ stitched into his ruddy skin, his messy hair, his vulnerable eyes, the frippery he drapes himself in to look tougher. His fury is in his scent, how he stinks of booze and⊠What was it? Heartbreak and heroics? Destiny?
Those vulnerable eyes search Geraltâs for something now, and when Jaskier doesnât find whatever it is heâs looking for, he blinks and sniffs and clears his throat all at once. âI know there arenât any windows down here, but up in the world of the living,â the bard informs him, sounding more like his haughty usual self, âdawn has almost broken. Youâre usually training at this pointâ I knew you and the other witchers stayed up late, but I didnât know you had drank yourself to sleep right on the table. I mean, when I came down here, I thought something had gone horrendously wrong.â
âSomething did go horrendously wrong,â Geralt jokes, deadpan. âI drank too much.â
âYes.â Another sniff. âI think they can smell that from Novigrad. But, Iâve seen you drink an entire bar by yourself before.â
âThat was human alcohol,â he clarifies. âThis was not.â
âAh.â Jaskier gives the bottle rolling away on the floor a more considering glance, then stoops to pick it up. Geralt has seen Jaskier sample more dangerous substances but not many, so instinct takes over. He rounds his knees over the bench to spin around properly in his seat, and then rises to stalk over to the bard andâ well, he only means to take the bottle and set it down on the table again. But as he misjudges the distance between them, he ends up slamming into Jaskier and knocking him back a few steps.
This time, the bottle does shatter, and Jaskier shouts. âWhat the fuck! What isâ listen, Geralt, just because youâre experiencing a proper hangover for the first time doesnât mean you get to fuckingâ whatever the hell you think it is youâre doing!â His hands fly up to grab Geralt by the collar of his shirt, shaking him as best he can. The motion doesnât sway Geralt as much as the loud sound does; he holds firmly onto Jaskierâs shoulders, trying to regain control of his breathing. âAnd if you want to know why Iâm not mad at you, well, Iâve got a lovely surprise for you, you absolute prick, because I am, in fact, furiousââ
âThen why come down here,â Geralt interrupts roughly, sounding as ragged as he feels. âWhy keep tabs on me if Iâm such aââ
âKeep tabs on you!â Jaskier chokes, incredulous. âI couldnât give less of a fuck what you doââ
âYou watch me train every morning,â he growls. Jaskierâs angry mouth clamps shut at that, and the rush of colour floods his face once more. âEven if I couldnât see you watching, you just said about as much. Why?â
âMaybe I like seeing you tire yourself out!â Thereâs that anger, solid as a mountain. Geralt rests against it, almost comforted by Jaskierâs rage even as the man continues. âMaybe it pairs well with my morning tea; such a lovely sight, my boorish, sweaty witcher throwing himself against a training dummy for hours and hours as the sun rises instead of talking out your deep grief and trauma with, oh, hmm, I donât know, fucking anyone? A friend? Your family? Your sorceress lover?â
âWe talked about feelings last night,â Geralt protests.
Jaskier huffs, dropping his grip on Geraltâs shirt. Each angry sentence had been accentuated by him brandishing his fists as if to shake Geralt, like an angry childâ in the absence of his tightly curled fingers, there are long lines that will undoubtedly stretch out the shirt. Geralt doesnât care. Cold as ice, the bard hisses, âDid you now?â
âOh yes.â Vaguely, at least.
âAnd how did that go?â
His memories are too vivid for the amount of liquor he consumed. Only a few hours ago, this room felt much smaller. Happier, despite the blips of enormous griefâ how had their discussion about feelings gone? He remembers Lambert pretending not to fight back angry tears, hiding his twitching scowl behind his mug after they all fell silent at the mention of an old quirk Diever used to have.
Geralt, in lieu of a good answer, releases Jaskierâs shoulders so as to indicate the broken glass shards littering the floor between them. And, bizarrely, this works. Jaskierâs face falls, and he laughs uncomfortably. âRight. Yeah. Sorry. Youâre drunk, and Iâm being a prick.â
Instead of insisting that if he was still drunk he would feel better, Geralt steps over the bottle and presses a hand to Jaskierâs shoulder again. âNo⊠you came to check on me,â he reminds the man gently. âEven though youâre furious. No one else has even noticed I didnât make it to bed last night.â
âThatâs probably for the best,â Jaskier mutters. This time he doesnât shake Geralt, nor does he shake him off. He simply tolerates the witcher entering his personal space, just like how Geralt used to put up with the young bardâs apparent and obnoxious omnipresence. He doesnât even avert his gaze, staring blatantly instead. âIf I really was Yen, Iâd be disappointed. You look like shit.â
âYou used to bathe me,â Geralt blurts out, emboldened by the closeness and the hangover. Jaskier gapes, but he continues, a boat cut loose from its anchor, drifting further beyond the forgivable pale. âI havenât forgotten. Iâve lived for more than a hundred years, but⊠Iâll never forget.â
âGeralt,â Jaskier says, heavily and warningly and desperately.
âYouâ you could do it again now,â he stammers. His hand rises from the manâs shoulder to the side of his throat; he lines his pointer fingers up under Jaskierâs jaw and feels the bard breathe. Pulse to pulse, the years are easier to forget. âIâd let you. You havenât changed so much, you knowâ new coat, new hair⊠and you reek of wine now, butââ
âWowââ
âBut, your eyes are the same blue as ever.â Geralt traces the curve of Jaskierâs cheekbone, humming. âVitriol blue.â
âIf youâre trying to sound like a poet, comparing my eyes to sulphuric acid is a shitty start.â The protests are less effective thanks to how Jaskierâs voice trembles. He lifts his hand but only to place it over Geraltâs, palm soothing his knuckles. Geralt sways into him, and once more a strong arm circles around his back, keeping him steady. âIf you remember this when youâre sober, youâre never going to speak to me again.â
âIâm painfully sober,â promises Geralt, lowering his tone to impress the severity of his sobriety upon Jaskier. âMy stomach is killing me. I want to sleep for two days straight, then wake up to a barrel of coffee and a gigantic breakfast, and then I want to poison Eskel for doing this to me.â And Lambert too, for good measure. âBut first, I want you to bathe with me.â
âGeralt.â Jaskier shakes his head as his steel grip tightens around the witcher to support him. But despite his stern expression and posture, his voice is soft and affectionate as ever. The laboratory has never seemed smaller. Geralt strokes the bardâs cheek again. âFuck. Listen to me, my stupid darling witcher. If I take you down to the springs right now, youâre likely to drown and Iâm nowhere near strong enough to pull you to safety. Sleeping for two days sounds better, doesnât it? Wouldnât you like to go to bed?â
Instead of pointing out that Jaskier is obviously strong enough to lift him as heâs holding him up right now, he finally relents. âYes.â The humanâs shoulders sink in relief until Geralt pleads, âTake me to bed, Jaskier.â
Jaskier laughs, tense and sharp, and pulls away before Geralt can try to persuade him anymore.
-
Every blow of his steel sword against the rotating iron dummy is a new pin-prick against Geraltâs already fragile skull. He keeps at it anyway, only showing himself mercy by striking at a less vicious rhythm than he might on other mornings. And while he usually doesnât have to worry about the sun, the early afternoon is almost blinding.
As poor as he feels, heâs in much better shape than last night. The exact logistics of how he made it to bed and undressed have escaped him; he only knows that Jaskier had somehow managed to carry his drunk ass all the way back to his room. Geralt twists to glance up at the high walls of the Keep, his gaze searching for the window to the bardâs room. The little songbird watches him train every morning, just as Geralt had cruelly pointed out last night. Maybe it pairs well with my morning tea.
Itâs no longer the morning. The familiar silhouette of his friend is nowhere to be found now.
Geralt strikes the dummy again, stomach roilingâ not from his bad hangover, but from bitter, inescapable embarrassment. Over the decades they have fallen into certain roles together. Usually, Jaskier is the one who canât handle his alcohol, who imbibes too much and makes it the witcherâs problem. Usually Jaskier is the one teetering on the slippery precipice of inebriation, begging Geralt to stay up and chat with him, loudly singing of the nightâs exploits, and constantly proclaiming to his captive audience of one how very not drunk he is.
But in all their years of friendship, Jaskier has never behaved like that. Sure, heâs broken bottles, and stumbled up to Geralt stinking of sweat and sin and far worse things than liquor. But he has never pressed himself up against the witcherâs body, never begged to be held or gripped him tightly or traced the outline of his face. Never has Jaskier asked Geralt to bathe him; let alone to bathe with him.
Geralt swings too hard. His shoulder twinges; he beheads the iron dummy. Its vague head-shaped appendage clatters to the ground and the loud noise echoes around the stone courtyard.
Still, Jaskier does not peek out of his window.
Geralt sheathes his steel and stomps back inside, livid with himself. He pushes open the doors to the main hall and strips off the top half of his sweaty armour as he does. When he succeeds in removing his shirt and throwing it to the ground, he sees the very man whoâs been on his mind all day standing before him.
If Jaskier is put off by the ugly scowl marring Geraltâs features or by his heaving, bare, oily chest, he doesnât let it slip. In each of his hands is a clay mug of steaming water; he proffers one now and Geralt accepts it gently, cowed by the kindness. It isnât in fact water but hot black tea.
In all those times that Jaskier came to him for aid, drunk as a Skelligan or hungover enough to curse the gods themselves, Geralt doesnât think he ever went to the trouble of brewing the bard tea. He raises the mug to his lips without question; itâs delicious, and instantly calms his aching head. This makes him feel even guiltier. âThanks,â mutters the witcher.
Jaskierâs eyes flash, but he keeps his musings to himself for once. There is a slightly clipped, nervous edge to his tone as he chirps, âFeeling better?âÂ
Perhaps heâs expecting Geralt to lunge forward and drop the mug between them and embrace him again. Geralt, mortified, will do no such thing. He answers honestly and bluntly, âNo.â
Jaskier should slap him for his impudence or chew him out for his ungratefulness. He just smiles, nervously shifting between his feet, and then finally paces over to retrieve a previously unnoticed basket from a nearby table. Inside lay some small vials of oil and cleanly folded towels. Geraltâs heart melts, and Jaskier, still smiling anxiously, says, âWell, Iâve got just the thing.â

37. not realizing theyâre holding hands till someone points it out
Now that the blood is less, he's only crying.
Yennefer holds him upright in her arms and lets him lean on her shoulder and wet the fabric of the dress and she can't help her heart thumping in her chest. Still thumping. Geralt doesn't look up from the stitches as though if he focuses enough, he won't hear Jaskier's whimpers.
She is not as lucky. She's too close.
Jaskier is only delirious, now that the blood is less. Only that the blood is never less. And Yennefer looks at the stitches spreading across his abdomen and they still look like a gaping hole and the ground is still pooling with his blood, the one they didn't manage to place back inside as though they wanted to hide a broken plate, piece it back together.
The blood is never less. Jaskier flinches in her arms and lets out a cry, weak, so weak she wishes to never hear him like that again. She almost regrets holding him becasue now she can feel every tremor wrecking his body shaking hers too.
No, they're too numbing. It can't be he's the only one trembling.
Geralt is muttering something under his breath, you're alright, almost done, you're alright. As though he can't see the blood. As though he doesn't want to.
Jaskier whines and hides his face deeper in her shoulder, leans on her entirely and she finds herself tightening her embrace as if he will slip away otherwise. "Hush," she says and it's more to herself. "The only one ever going to kill you is me."
In all his agony, he muffles a laugh and it makes her smile. At least, at least. Just this, so as not to cry. Her fingers tangle between the curls on his nape and they're sweaty. Or it's the blood.
There is this ache spreading in her body, or just her arms, or just her hands. This dread of being left empty. She holds him tighter.
This weight off her shoulders. Jaskier's body sags in her arms and the ache remains, but it's pleasant because it's there. Tighter, ever so weak, not to hurt him, not again.
She hasn't even looked into his eyes all this time. Glazed, hurting. It would be too much.
Then, a hand on her wrist and she sways back to reality. Gentle. "Yen, he'll be alright," she hears and it's Geralt. Worried, forever worried. And gentle. "You can let go now."
Slowly, she lowers her eyes on her wrist. Then her hand. There, grasping Jaskier's and his clawing back, still so tight they're shaking, knuckles white and bloody. She lets out a breath, sharp. Slowly, she loosens her grip, almost lets her hand slip and his nails have left bloody scratches on her palm, angry red. The ache.
She looks at Geralt, nods and he nods back. Silent, no need for words, because they will only sound hollow in the echo the screams have left behind. Silent. They both know anyway.
Jaskier's breath finally evens beside her ear and she lets Geralt take him instead, carry him away from the blood and the pain and the fear. Lets his hand slip away from hers, now limp and empty and tired as it hangs, blood dripping from his fingertips and it could be hers, the grip. She doesn't move, only remains staring.
With her thumb she traces the marks on her palm and relieves in the ache that remains.

He cannot seem to escape it - in moments of quiet he can still feel his fingers burning, with every mouthful of food that he eats, all he tastes is the horrid mixture of blood and smoke, and it takes everything he has to swallow it down and not empty his stomach, and he is constantly looking over his shoulder, catching glimpses for that lingering shadow, waiting for the moment when that black figure and that singular flame catch him again.
Most days, he has a handle on it.
Or at least, he does his best to convince everyone that he has a handle on it.
He knows the best make-up to cover the bruises under his eyes, hiding any evidence of yet another sleepless night, has willed his fingers to stop trembling every time he picks up his lute and plays that blasted burning song, has mastered the delivery of his excuses so he does not have to have the fire lit in the room in which he is staying, or why he is choosing to sit in the drafty seat in the corner, rather than the one closer to the fireplace.
He isnât sure if anyone actually buys his act, whether they can see past the flimsy veneer he has carved for himself, the cover that feels like it could simply melt away if anyone were to look at him too closely for even a second. Or whether the lifetime he has spent perfecting his performance means that everyone around him is fooled, and that in time this will become just another piece of him that he will bury deep down, that will rot away and never be seen by anyone else again, no matter how much it may eat away at him.
His current crowd seem to be fooled anyhow, buying his smiles and winks as they cheerfully chuck coins his way, shouting their requests from all corners of the bar. They donât see the tiredness set in his shoulders, the slight rasp in his voice from another night facing demons that leave him waking up with screams on his lips.
He is coming close to the end of his set, and he wants nothing more than grabbing a bowl of stew before collapsing into his bed. He strums the final notes on his lute, and the crowd erupt into shouts and cheers around him. He can hear the coins falling into his case on the table, the pats on his shoulder as he makes his way down from the makeshift stage, he takes a swig from the mug of ale that someone has pressed into his hand.
For a moment, he can almost feel the old spark light in him, a wave of emotions that he hasnât felt whilst performing since before that godawful mountain washes over him, and he is almost knocked over by the force of it.
Perhaps, he is on the way out of it, and his heart lifts for a moment at the thought of a brighter future, one without fear and the phantom burning in his fingers.
And then someone pulls at his hands and it all comes crashing down around him.
There is the faintest touch on his hand and suddenly he is back in that dark, damp room, back in that chair, wood hard underneath him, rope rough and tight around his wrists, staring at that manic grin, those cold and calculating eyes boring into him, as he does his best to get away.
He isnât sure how exactly he makes it out of the inn, whether or not he manages to excuse himself politely or whether he simply flees the room like a scared child. He may have said something but he has absolutely no idea what it was, but then his mouth has always been good at figuring something out whilst his mind is elsewhere.
His chest is heaving when he makes it outside, every breath he takes seems to be filled with smoke, and he is helpless to do anything but slide down the wall when he makes it into the alley, his head falling into his hands.
The only noise he can hear is his heart pounding in his ears, so he does not notice the footsteps coming towards him, does not realise he is not alone until a figure crouches down in front of him. He curses himself for falling apart somewhere so public, as he quickly reaches up to wipe his cheeks of the tears he didnât even know had fallen.
âThereâs no need for that bard,â a familiar voice says and he lifts his head to see a pair of violet eyes looking back at him.
It has been a few weeks since he has seen Yennefer, last he had heard she was off training Ciri in some far flung corner of the Continent, so he isnât sure what exactly she is doing here, with him in this dingy little alley in some backwater town.
âWhatââ he tries to ask, but his voice is thicker than he would like, so he clears it before trying again. âWhat are you doing here?â
âHeard there was a performance by a world-renowned bard happening and thought I couldnât miss the opportunity,â she answers, before adding with a small smirk. âSeems I was misled though.â
Before, that comment would have had his hackles rising, and he would have been thinking of a viscous retort that was ready to wound. But now he can feel the warmth behind it, and he just rolls his eyes.
âWitch.â
She huffs a laugh and comes to sit beside him, and there is a rush of something he canât quite name as she leans her shoulder into his and takes his trembling hands in hers.
âTruth is bard, I missed you,â she says simply. âItâs been hard, I thought everything would be fixed when I got my Chaos back, and no-one else seems to quite understand it. I need a friendly face.â
And her admission that she is here on purpose, she is here for him, and that she has sought him out is enough to send him spiralling all over again. Later he will blame it on the tiredness and the cold and the hangover, but now he just curls into her shoulder as her fingers brush through his hair and cries.
(And maybe he feels his own hair grow damp with her tears, but if he does, he will not mention it,)
Because underneath the fear of the mage and the fire and being so out of control again, his real fear of being forgotten, being deemed no longer useful, and the community and family he was finally starting to build being ripped away from him.
Eventually his tears run out, and he lifts his head from her shoulder to look into her face, and reflected in it he can see his own fear and worry, about no longer knowing who you are, having to carve out a new way for yourself, into the unknown whilst trying to figure out your place in the world.
And all he can do is lean in and press their lips together, both of them trembling, or perhaps it is just him but it feels right and he can feel the care and relief and togetherness that is shared in that kiss.
It is time for him to burn his own path, and he wants to do it with her by his side.
For the hug prompts: #36 for Jaskel? (or pairing of your choice)
of buttercups and daisies
CW: Soft tummies (mentioned anyway)
Summary: Jaskier has a rather silly dream and Eskel thinks he's adorable.
Tag list: very bottom (shoot me an ask if you want on it!)
Thanks for the prompt! I was in a light hearted mood when I wrote this so it ended up rather silly despite the prompt xD
The bed dipped under Eskelâs weight as he climbed in several hours after his bard. His armor had been placed down with care as to not wake him, weapons following suit, and the night began to melt away as he scooted closer. The moon was high and bright, far too bright to usually catch much sleep, but Eskel had every intention of burying his face into the crook of Jaskierâs neck to shield himself from the rest of the world. He had a way of that, making it all quiet despite his chattery nature, and it was one of the many things that drew Eskel to him like towards a flame in the dead of winter.
Despite his best efforts to not wake him, Jaskier jolted when Eskelâs arm snaked around him and tugged him closer. Eskel started in turn, lips already parting on a soft apology, but before he could get so much as a word out Jaskier had turned and wrapped all four of his long limbs around him. Heâd done it with enough force to push Eskel over onto his back, the witcher left blinking up at the ceiling while Jaskier whined pitifully in his arms, squeezing him as tight as his delicate looking form could manage.
Which was, in all honesty, quite tight. Jaskier might look small next to Eskelâs bulk but he was no weakling. Eskelâs face scrunched up but he simply held Jaskier back, wrapping him up and squeezing him with not nearly all of his might. As he ran his hand up Jaskierâs back he drew another soft noise out of him, one that sleep still clung to, and Eskel chuckled as he pressed his lips to the top of Jaskierâs fussed up hair.
âAlright there, love?â Eskel didnât expect much of an answer but he also didnât expect Jaskier to squid him even tighter. Jaskier pressed himself as far into Eskelâs soft chest as he could, and when he did answer it was almost lost in-between Eskelâs tits.
Thankfully, Eskel had better hearing than most, and he just managed to make out the absolute incoherent babble that Jaskier had slurred out around a yawn. It took a few seconds to process enough to even laugh about, though when he did it jostled Jaskier enough to make him whine even further, drawn a little more out of his sleep and pressing as far into Eskel as he could manage.
âYou thought what had gotten me?â Eskel teased him softly, brushing some of that sleep mussed hair out of his beloved bardâs face, managing to catch a glimpse of that scrunched up, adorable face before it was turning back to press so firmly into his chest he left an indention in the soft layer of fat there.
âDaisies.â
Eskel actually snorted that time as Jaskier hooked his leg around Eskelâs, entangling them so firmly that Eskel knew it would be a struggle to get out of bed in the morning. Not that he really minded. The night was for his hunts; mornings and days were for his love.
âNot sure I see the danger in a bunch of flowers, Jaskier,â he drawled, not ready yet to take pity on him and let him sleep. But he soothed his hands over his back as Jaskier made another soft noise, pressing more kisses to the top of his head.
âGot you,â Jaskier slurred out, his words slowing even further as he sank into the warmth of his witcher. âTook you away. What if they took you for good?â
Eskel hummed, laying his head back and closing his eyes, shutting out the rest of the world and only listening to the steady beating of Jaskierâs heart and the slowing rhythm of his breaths.
âIâve no need to fear any daisies, love.â Eskel sighed, taking a moment to tug the blanket up over them to keep his bard warm. And though he could tell Jaskier had slipped back off to his dreams he still added, with a caress to his loveâs cheek, âMy buttercup will keep me safe.â
And he had no doubts that his buttercup would keep him.
