alright alright let’s see. klance and 🏜 vs 🏖
HMMM desert vs beach... first of all i think it’s very poetic that keith and lance’s sort of “signature habitats” are similar and polar opposites at the same time. like they’re both sandy environments but one is in the middle of the land far far away from any water and the other is right on the ocean. once again confirming that whole “two sides of the same coin” thing. but anyway i digress.
keith assumes lance would be eager to show off the beach as soon as they get back to earth and have some time for themselves. lance is always talking about how much he loves the beach, and when keith offhandedly mentioned he had never been to one before, lance had been so flabbergasted his voice had cracked when he insisted he take keith to varadero beach asap.
so, yeah. keith kind of figures “well the beach will be the first place lance wants to take me once we’re back on earth, i mean he’s been talking about taking me there for ages”
so it’s a hell of a surprise when, after they’ve been on earth for a while and reunited with families and taken care of official business, keith suggests exactly that and lance says “actually i was thinking maybe we could go to your place in the desert.”
because here’s the thing: lance has introduced keith to his family already, lance has rambled and raved about all the different parts of his personal life, lance has given keith a million windows into his childhood and the things that make earth home for him.
but keith has always been very private, and has always had a hard time speaking about his past. lance doesn’t want to pressure him to talk about things he can’t talk about, but he wants keith to know that he does want to share in those things--the good, the bad, and the ugly--if keith is okay with opening that door. lance wants to give keith a way of letting him in without having to get verbal about it: show, not tell. because he knows it’s easier for him that way.
so, the desert is the first place on lance’s list. of course he wants to take keith to the beach, too (and he does, a few days later!), but his desire to see keith in a swimsuit with his hair all wet and his biceps all shiny in the sunlight is not as strong as his desire to indicate to keith that he’s happy sharing in the small, bare, sometimes harsh and uncomfortable parts of his life that he can’t always bring himself to discuss. there are other ways of communicating, and sometimes just being physically present with someone in a place that holds meaning to them, even (and perhaps especially) if that meaning is often negative or difficult, can be the most effective way to tell them that you love them.
so, yeah. desert first, beach later. keith is taken aback by this idea but there’s something in the way that lance says it, in the way his eyes go kind of shy and soft and hesitant, in the way his lip quirks a bit nervously, like he’s not sure how his suggestion will be received--there’s something in that, that makes him understand, at least in part, the gesture being made.
so he accepts, and he brings lance to his little shack in the desert, and they share it together, in all its painful glory, until the emptiness keith feels upon setting foot inside is replaced by the fullness of knowing lance is right there with him, sealing up every crevice.
