Note: This chapter contains minor character death. Â It happens offscreen so to speak and isnât described in much detail, but I figured Iâd give you a heads-up just in case.
Enjoy!
âWhat did you say his name was again?â
âJames Griffin,â Keith said, âI knew him from high school.â
Pidge sighed and wiped some sweat from her forehead, leaving a streak of flour, âIâm sorry, man. Â Were the two of you close?â
âNot really. Â I mean, I knew him, but we didnât hang out or anything. Â To be honest, he was a bit of a prick back then. Â Still, he didnât deserve to die the way he did.â
Pidge grabbed a carton of eggs and began cracking them into the batter she was making, âThat bad, huh?â
âGod, it was awful, Pidge.  He was all torn up like a bear used him as a scratching post.  And the smell.  It was likeâŚI canât even describe it.  Lance thinks it was some sort of venom.  It was in his bloodstream and it turned Lanceâs nose.â
âHowâs Lance handling it, by the way?â
âNot bad. Â Itâs not like he hasnât seen a dead body before.â
âI guess thatâs true,â Pidge wiped her hands off on her apron and knocked on the wall behind her. Â âHey, Hunk?â she called, âI need a pair of strong bakerâs arms to knead this bread.â
Moments later, Pidgeâs boyfriend stepped through the wall, âYou called?â
Keith jumped a bit.
âSorry, sorry,â said Hunk, âI should have knocked back. Â You said something about kneading bread?â
Pidge nodded, âTheyâre part of our special on baked goods with luck spells. Â Iâve already mixed the ingredients and put the spell on. Â All you have to do is knead it for a bit and Iâll put it in the proving drawer.â
âYou got it,â said Hunk. Â He turned toward the lump of dough, âHow about it, buddy? Â Do you need me to knead you?â
Pidge snorted.
âWhat? Â Itâs very beneficial to talk to your food.â
âYouâre ridiculous.â
âQuiet now, I need to concentrate,â Hunk, being a ghost, could interact with physical objects, but only if his attention wasnât taken by other things, like talking.
Pidge stepped back to let Hunk do his work, âDo the police have any leads yet?â
Keith shook his head, âI donât think any of the guys at the station have had to investigate something like this before. Â The most exciting call they get is noise complaints for house parties. Â They might bring in a private investigator or something.â
âItâs too bad they donât have a good scryer on the force. Â Theyâd clear this mystery up in a heartbeat.â
âYeahâŚâ said Keith.  After a few moments of silence, he looked up, âHey, PidgeâŚdo you know how to scry?â
âYeah, of course.  Dad taught Matt and me how to scry when we were, like, little kids.  WaitâŚâ Pidge turned toward Keith, âDo you want me toâŚâ
âIâm just saying, it might help the police find the lead they need.  We could leave an anonymous tip, point them in the right direction.  AndâŚI donât know, Griffin and I werenât great to each other in life.  I feel like I owe him at least this much.â
âWell, I guess it wouldnât hurt to try.â
âNow wait a minute,â Hunk dropped the bread dough on the counter, âPidge, didnât you tell me once that it was a bad idea to mess with the dead? Â That they could be hard to handle?â
âI handle you just fine, donât I?â
âYeah, but thatâs because of my naturally friendly disposition.â
âListen, if youâre nervous, then come with me. Â I could use your help anyway. Â Lance should probably come too, since he was there when you found the body.â
Keith nodded, âIâll let him know. Â When are we doing this?â
âTomorrow. Â At sunset, if possible. Â Weâre gonna crack this case wide open.â
***
âLetâs get right to it, agents,â said Iverson, taking a seat at the steel table across from Shiro and Allura, âHave either of you heard of a town called New Altea?â
âNo,â said Shiro, at the same time Allura said, âYesâ.
âCare to share what you know, Agent Prince?â
âMy father had some friends in the area. Â We used to go there when I was little. Â Itâs at a cross between two ley lines, isnât it? Â So supernatural activity there is unusually high.â
âIâll give you half credit, Agent Prince. Â Supernatural activity in New Altea is unusually high. Â But itâs not just a crossroad between two ley lines. Â Itâs a crossroad between four ley lines.â
âFour?â said Shiro, âIs that even possible?â
âItâs rare, certainly, but not unheard of. Â Now that youâre familiar with the town of New Altea, Iâd like you to meet one of its residents.â
Iverson picked up the small remote sitting in front of him and turned on the television screen behind him. Â A slideshow began playing, the first slide featuring a photo of a young Caucasian man with brown hair.
âMeet James Griffin. Â Twenty-three years old. Â Lived his whole life in New Altea. Â Twenty-four hours ago, he was found dead in the woods surrounding the town.â
Iverson clicked to the next slide, which featured a photo of what was obviously Griffinâs dead body. Â Shiro felt the sandwich heâd had for lunch churn in his stomach.
âNow,â said Iverson, âAny idea what did that to him?â
âA mountain lion?â suggested Allura.
âNot big enough.â
âA grizzly bear?â said Shiro.
âNot in this part of the country.â
âA black bear, then.â
âBlack bears usually arenât that aggressive to humans this time of year.â
âWell, what killed him then?â said Allura, âA wolf? Â What could possibly be big enough to do something like that?â
âFunny you should mention wolves, Agent Prince. Â I think itâs time you met suspect number one.â
Iverson clicked to the next slide again. Â Another young manâs face appeared on the screen, with dark eyes and black hair that went down to his shoulders.
âAgents, this is Keith Kogane. Â Mr. Kogane here is of interest to us for three reasons. Â First, he was present when the body was found. Â Second, disciplinary records show that he had a habit of getting into fights with Mr. Griffin back in high school. Â Third, and perhaps most interesting of all, heâs a werewolf.â
Shiro shook his head, âSo you think this guyâŚthis kidâŚdid that to that other guy?â
âThat is exactly what I think, yes.â
âSir, with all due respect, thatâs not a lot of evidence to go on.â
âI understand, but itâs the only evidence we have right now.â
âBut I just donât think it rules out the possibility of an animal attack. Â In order for the PBI to warrant an investigation, there has to be sufficient evidence of paranormal involvementââ
âIâm well aware of what the policy states, agent,â snapped Iverson, âWould you rather I give you a different assignment?  You know the PBIâs been itching to learn more about your brotherâŚâ
Shiroâs hands clenched into fists, âNo, sir.â
âVery good,â said Iverson. Â He reached into his briefcase and dropped two manila folders on the table, âHereâs everything we have so far on the suspect. Â Study up. Â I expect you to be on the road by tomorrow morning.â
After Iverson had left the room, Allura put a hand on Shiroâs shoulder, âHe shouldn't have said that.â
âNo, heâs right, I was pushing too hard.â
âStill, he shouldnât have brought up your brother like that. Â He knows as well as I do that your family wants to be left alone,â she rubbed his shoulder soothingly, âWhy did you push him?â
âI donât really know. Â Something about this case just doesnât sit right. Â I mean, look at Suspect Number One up there,â Shiro gestured toward the television, which was still displaying Keith Koganeâs face, âDoes that kid look like the type of guy who would slash someone to ribbons?â
âYou have a point,â said Allura, âStill, maybe things will be more clear once we get there. Â For now, Iâd better head home.â Â She scooped up her folder, âGot lots of homework tonight.â
âSee you tomorrow, then,â said Shiro as she walked out the door. Â He grabbed his own folder and pulled it toward him, flipping it open, âWell, Keith Kogane, I hope my hunch about you is right. Â Letâs get to know you a little better.â

Note: Contains discussion of religion. Â Coran works as an (admittedly very chill) priest and some of the topics they discuss have theological implications. Â Nothing too heavy, just thought Iâd give you guys a heads-up
Also, as always, contains minor character death and generally scary shit (it is a supernatural au after all)

âJust so weâre clear, if we end up getting arrested for tampering with a crime scene, Iâm going on record and saying I was against this idea.â
âThey canât arrest you for anything, Hunk,â said Keith as the group hiked through the woods, âYouâre dead.â
âWell, that doesnât seem very fair,â said Lance, âIâm dead and the police have never had any trouble arresting me.â
Pidge was leading the group, holding up a compact mirror like she was trying to get a better signal on her cell phone, âKeith, are we getting close?â
âItâs just over this hill,â said Keith, âI can smell it.â
âUgh, me too,â said Lance, wrinkling his nose, âYouâd think the smell would have dissipated by now.â
They must have been getting close because now even Hunk could smell the stench and, as far as he could tell, his senses had diminished after death. Â It smelled a bit like a zoo exhibit, something about it suggesting an animal to him, only it must have been far stronger because whatever was left of Hunkâs fight-or-flight response was kicking in hard. Â He had the distinct impression of wanting to be anywhere but here.
Pidge was the first to reach the top of the hill. Â She looked over the rise, froze, and immediately dove down so that she was laying in the underbrush.
âShit!â she whispered, âCops.â
The boys all ducked down and joined her, looking cautiously over the hill. Â Sure enough, the area where Griffinâs body had been found was bordered off by police tape stretched between trees while two bored-looking police officers stood guard.
âHow are we gonna get rid of them?â asked Pidge, âIâve got to be near the place this guy died in order for this to work.â
âI think I have an idea,â said Lance, and he leaned over and whispered something into Keithâs ear.
âAre you kidding?! Â No!â said Keith.
âDo you have a better plan?â
âIâm not doing that, itâs humiliating.â
âCome on, Keith, this was your idea. Â Youâve gotta work with me here.â
âUgh, fine. Â But you owe me after this.â
âThatâs the spirit, babe!â said Lance. Â He reached over and flicked Keith on the forehead, âNow, think angry thoughts.â
âDo I even want to know what youâre doing?â asked Hunk.
âYouâll see in a minute,â said Lance, before turning back to Keith, âThink about all those times Romelle stole the last ice cream bar. Â Think about the time I forgot date night last month.â
Keith huffed and growled and began to change, expanding into his wolf form. Â Hunk looked down, not particularly keen on watching his friendâs bones shift beneath his skin. Â Once it sounded like Keith had calmed down a bit, he looked back up and found himself staring at a wolf.
âKeith? Â Are you still you?â said Lance cautiously.
The wolf made a nodding motion.
âGreat, now I need you to run inâŚâ Lance indicated a path that would take Keith right past the policemen, âthat direction.â
Immediately, Keith took off and Lance raced after him, running right past the police.
âCosmo!â Lance called, âCosmo, come back here! Â Come to daddy!â
âWhat theâŚ?â Hunk heard one of the officers say.
âHey!â Lance called to the cops, âHey, can you help me? Â My dog got away from me! Â I donât want him running onto the road!â
âSir? Â Sir, your dog should really be on a leash!â yelled one officer.
âJesus, itâs big,â the other officer said to himself, âThe hell kind of breed is that?â
âCome on, letâs go!â
There was the sound of feet running though the undergrowth and when Hunk looked over the hill again, the two officers were gone.
âWell, that worked,â said Pidge, âCome on, theyâll be back soon.â
As expected, the body had already been taken off the sight, but there was still evidence of the gruesome scene: dried blood making rusty patches on the ground, saplings and tree branches newly snapped, and that horrible scent permeating everything.
âI think it was here,â said Pidge, indicating a patch of ground that had the biggest bloodstain. Â She knelt down next to it and pulled out her compact mirror, âFair warning, Iâm about to go into a trance-like state. Â If I lose control or it seems like itâs hurting me, I need you to shake me out of it.â
âI will,â said Hunk.
Pidge nodded, satisfied. Â She looked down at the mirror and began to mutter incantations.
After a few moments, Hunk was pretty sure he could feel another presence. Â Something no longer alive like him, but not as fully formed, something that had once been a living soul but had lost its definition. Â Hunk was intensely reminded of his existence before Pidge had moved him to the bakery, a shadow of himself, only full of restlessness at being incomplete.
Pidge stared hard into the mirror, concentrating. Â Hunk watched as her focused stare turned into a frown. Â Then, her eyes widened.
She must be getting something, Hunk thought.
He watched as Pidge continued to take in whatever the mirror was showing her. Â Her eyes flicked back and forth across the surface and her breathing began to get heavier. Â There was fear in her expression, more fear than Hunk had ever seen on her before.
âPidge?â
Pidge did not respond to him. Â Her next breath came out as a sob.
âPidge, you okay? Â What do you see?â
Pidge opened her mouth and screamed, a shriek that pierced right through him. Â Immediately, he reached out and knocked the mirror from her hand. Â She swayed and he put his hands on her shoulders to steady her.
âHey! Â Hey, Pidge, look at me!â
She slumped forward and was only prevented from falling through Hunk because his focus was already on her. Â She leaned against him while he whispered, âItâs okay, itâs okayâ and smoothed her hair down.
In the distance, the sound of Lanceâs voice reached him.
âI just canât thank you enough, officersâŚâ
âNext time, we expect you to keep your pet on a leash. Â A dog that big shouldnât be running around loose in these woods.â
âOf course, sir, I understand.â
Shit, they couldnât be found here. Â Come on, Hunk, if you can carry five trays of muffins at once, you can carry your girlfriend. Â Carefully, cautiously, Hunk picked Pidge up and ducked under the police tape, returning to the spot where the group had previously hidden.
Lance and Keith joined him a moment later, Keith shifting back into his human form.
âCosmo?â he said, âReally? Â Thatâs the best dog name you can come up with?â
âWell, I didnât exactly have time to workshop it,â said Lance, before noticing Pidge, âHey, what happened? Â Is she okay?â
âI donât know,â said Hunk, âPidge? Â Pidge, can you hear me?â
Pidge stirred and Hunk set her down on the ground so she could sit up.
âWhat happened?â he asked, âDid you see anything?â
âI did,â Pidge nodded, still swaying from dizziness, âIâŚI think I saw James Griffinâs death.â
âWell, what happened to him?â asked Keith.
âHe was running from some kind of animal.  It was aâŚaâŚI donât even know what it was.  It was dark and he couldnât see well, but itâŚit was chasing him andâŚand it was so big, guys, bigger than anything youâve ever seen.  At one point, he looked back at it and it looked at him and itâŚâ Pidge shuddered.
âShh, itâs okay,â said Hunk, âYou take it easy. Â Iâll carry you back if you want.â
âI donât know about you guys,â said Lance, âbut Iâve got more questions than answers now.â
But Pidge shook her head, âGuys, whatever this thing isâŚif itâs loose in these woods, then weâre all in danger.â
***
Shiro and Allura found Coran in the sanctuary, setting up for evening Mass.
âWelcome to St. Groggeryâs,â he said over his shoulder, âIâm a bit busy at the moment, but if youâre looking for information on the church, there should be a newsletter available in the welcome center.â
âCoran, itâs me,â said Allura.
Coran turned and a smile spread across his face. Â He jogged down the aisle and gave Allura a big hug.
âDear girl, itâs good to see you! Â I almost forgot what you look like! Â Youâre doing well, I hope?â
âAs well as can be expected,â said Allura, âIâd like you to meet my partner, Takashi Shirogane.â
âCall me Shiro. Â Alluraâs told me so much about you.â
Coran gave Shiro a handshake, âPleasure to meet you. Â What brings you two back to New Altea?â
âA case weâre working on,â said Allura, âWe just stopped by to say hi.â
âItâs the Griffin boy, isnât it? Â Nasty business, that.â
âDid you know him?â asked Shiro.
âNot personally,â said Coran, âHis folks were Presbyterian. Â Not that I hold that against them, of course,â he added quickly.
âLet me ask this, then.  You havenât heard anything about him fromâŚhigher sources?â
Coran raised an eyebrow, âAllura told you about my little party trick, did she?â
Shiro shrugged, âIt came up once or twice.â
âThen I assume you didnât just drop by to say hi.â
âWe just want to make sure weâve got as much information going into this case as possible. Â Anything you can tell us would be extremely helpful.â
Coran sat down heavily in a nearby pew and motioned for the others to do the same, âWhat you need to understand about my gift is that itâs not a two-way conversation. Â Itâs more like television, you know? Â The boys upstairs send messages, images really, and I receive them. Â I canât just play twenty questions whenever I want.â
âWell then,â said Allura, âHave they sent you any messages lately?â
Coran thought for a moment.  âThey did.  In factâŚI think they may have sent a message for you specifically.â
Shiro and Allura leaned forward.
âMind you, I have no idea whether this has anything to do with the case youâre investigating. Â But last night, I had a dream about a beast.â
âWhat kind of beast?â Shiro sat forward.
âI couldnât really tell. Â Thatâs the annoying thing about dreams, once you try to remember what happened, it leaks out of your mind like a sieve. Â I just remember a big, dark animal of some kind. Â And when I say big, I mean big. Â This thing was so big, it picked up the entire town in its claws and swallowed it down like a handful of popcorn.â
âSounds a bit bigger than a werewolf to me,â said Allura, just loud enough for Shiro to hear.
âNeedless to say, it rattled me a bit. Â Apocalyptic visions of a beast are usually a bad sign in my profession. Â There was something else, though. Â Four individuals appeared in my dream. Â A leader, a protector, a scholar, and a wanderer. Â Whoever they are, it seems like theyâll be important to you.â
âThatâs it?â said Shiro, âCan you give us anything besides that? Â Names? Â Physical descriptions? Â Anything besides their D&D classes?â
âListen, I got all this from a dream, not a dating profile. Â If you want more information, you can ask the higher-ups themselves. Â Who knows, maybe theyâll give you my job and I can finally retire.â
âYouâve been very helpful, Coran, really,â said Allura, patting his hand reassuringly, âShiro and I should probably go though, weâve got an interview to conduct. Â Weâll get lunch together sometime before I leave.â
Coran nodded, âExcellent idea. Â Good luck on your case, by the way. Â If you need any help, Iâll be more than happy to lend it.â
As they were about to walk out the door, Shiro turned back, âOne last question?â
âOf course.â
âYour visionsâŚhow do you know thatâs what they are?  How do you know theyâre not just weird dreams?â
Coran thought for a moment, âDo you know how I knew that vision was meant for you?â
âHow?â
âBecause you were in it. Â As clearly as I see you now. Â The face, the voice, the prosthetic, everything. Â Hereâs the thing though, Iâve seen pictures of you, but only your face. Â Iâve never seen your prosthetic before and Alluraâs never mentioned it to me. Â Until today, I had no idea it existed. Â But you had it in my dream.â
Finally our protagonists begin to cross paths. Â Lance is an old, old man, Keith makes some new friends(?), and Shiro and Allura are now working under a deadline.
Enjoy!
Keith looked over his boyfriendâs shoulder as he tapped away at his laptop, âAnything?â
âNothing so far. Â Granted, the search terms âbig dangerous animalâ arenât very specific.â
He and Lance had decided to do a bit of research to see if they could figure out what kind of creature Pidge had seen while scrying. Â The search brought up plenty of animals, bears, moose, timber wolves and the like, but none seemed to be native to this area.
As Keith watched Lance scroll through pages and pages of âWhat To Do If a Bear Attacks Youâ, Romelle poked her head into Keithâs room.
âLaundry day, today,â she said, âGot any whites?â
Keith gestured to the hamper behind him, eyes still glued to the computer screen.
As Romelle picked the hamper up, she glanced over at the pair, âWhat are you two doing anyway?â
Lance snapped the laptop shut. Â âNothing,â he said too quickly.
Way to not look suspicious, Lance, Keith thought, rolling his eyes. Â âIâm helping Lance set up a Facebook profile. Â Itâs time to make this old geezer a proper twenty-first century man.â
Romelle snorted, âJust say youâre watching porn together, Keith, itâs okay.â Â She balanced the hamper on her hip and left the room.
Once she was gone, Lance turned around to glare at Keith, ââSetting up my Facebook profileâ? Â Really? Â Now your sisterâs gonna think Iâm useless with technology.â
âItâs because you are useless with technology.â
âAm not!â
âLance, you yelled at the Blu-ray player last weekend because it ate your copy of Ghostbusters.â
âIt wouldnât give it back!â
Keith was about to list off more examples of Lanceâs hopelessness with technology, when the sound of the doorbell interrupted him.
âKeith, were you expecting someone?â Romelleâs voice carried up from downstairs.
âMom probably just forgot her house keys again,â Keith called back.
Keith heard the sound of the door being opened and two voices talking. Â One was clearly Romelleâs and the other was one he hadnât heard before, a manâs voice. Â After a moment, the conversation stopped and was replaced by the sound of Romelleâs footsteps on the stairs.
âItâs two people in suits,â said Romelle, poking her head back in the doorway, âThey want to talk to you.â
âHuh,â Keith got up from his chair and followed Romelle out of the room.
âDo you think theyâre social workers?â Romelle whispered to him, âAre they here to take me away?â
âYouâre eighteen now, Romelle, theyâre not legally allowed to take you away.â said Keith, but his insides had begun to churn. Â Eighteen might be the year humans became legal adults, but he had no idea what kind of rules applied to changelings.
Through the doorway, Keith could see the two individuals Romelle was talking about. Â One was a tall Asian man with a scar across the bridge of his nose, wearing a crisp black suit and tie. Â The other was a black woman with shockingly white hair, also neatly dressed in a black blazer and matching pencil skirt.
âKeith Kogane?â the man asked.
âYeah?â said Keith.
âIâm Agent Shirogane and this is Agent Prince,â the man reached out for a handshake.
âNice to meet you,â said Keith, taking the handshake and jumping a bit when his hand met with cool metal.
âWe have a few questions weâd like to ask you about the recent death of James Griffin. Â May we come in?â said the woman.
âUhâŚsure,â Keith waved them into the living room, filled with relief that they werenât here for Romelle, followed by apprehension that, apparently, they were here for him.
The two agents sat down on the couch while Keith sat across from them. Â The female agent picked up a bit of fur that had rubbed off the couch cushion onto her skirt. Â She let it float to the ground, frowning.
âSorry about the hair,â said Keith, âWe havenât vacuumed in a while in here.â
âDo you have a dog?â said the male agent.
Whoops. Â âWe, uh, dog-sit for the neighbors a lot.â
The man, Agent Shirogane, apparently, decided to drop it, âSo, Keith, if I understand correctly, youâre the one who originally found the body. Â Is that correct?â
Keith shifted in his seat, âYes.  WellâŚI mean, me and my family.â
âSo your family was with you?â said Agent Prince, âWhat were you doing at the time?â
âGoing for a hike,â said Keith.
âAt night?â
âItâsâŚquieter then.â
âAs I understand it,â said Agent Shirogane, âYou and Mr. Griffin were in the same class in high school.â
âYeah, I guess we were.â
âDid you know him?â
âWell, it was a small class. Â Everyone kind of knew everyone.â
âI see. Â Would you say the two of you were particularly close?â
âNotâŚreally.  He had his own group of friends and I kept to myself mostly.â
âWas there ever any tension between you?â
âTension?â
Agent Shirogane nodded, âDid you two ever get into any fights, arguments, things like that?â
The living room carpet was suddenly fascinating to Keith, âI meanâŚmaybe once or twice?  He wasâŚWe just didnât get along.â
âKeith,â said Agent Prince, âWe need you to be honest with us.â
âYeahâŚyeah, we fought a few times.  He said some things about my family I didnât like.â
âCan you be more specific?â
âI would rather not.â
Keith waited for the two agents to press the issue, but they simply nodded and Agent Shirogane said, âIâd like to hear more about you, Keith. Â Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?â
âWellâŚâ said Keith, âIâm twenty-two.  I work at the bike repair on Main Street.  I, uh, live here with my mom and my sister.  Youâve met her already.â
âThe girl with the pigtails,â said Agent Shirogane, nodding, âAm I right in thinking one of you is adopted?â
âWhat gave it away? Â The different ethnicities?â
âIâm sorry, I didnât mean to pry.â
âNo, itâs fine, we get it a lot. Â Romelleâs the adopted one.â
âI assume your mother and sister were the ones hiking with you the night you found the body?â said Agent Prince.
âWell, it was my whole family, really. Â I, um, have a large extended family.â
âItâs nice that youâre so close to them,â said Agent Shirogane, âWas anyone else with you at the time?â
âWell, there wasâŚâ Keith began to say before he heard footsteps on the stairs.
Lance poked his head out of the stairwell, âEverything okay down here?â
âYeah,â said Keith, âWe were justâŚâ  He turned and, to his surprise, the two agents were on their feet, looking up at Lance in shock.
âAm I interrupting something?â said Lance.
âNo, no, youâre good. Â These two are just here to investigate the Griffin case,â Keith turned toward the agents, âThis is my boyfriend, Lance.â
Agent Shirogane cleared his throat, âYes, well, itâs nice to meet you. Â We should really be going, though. Â Thank you for your cooperation, Mr. Kogane.â
They were halfway out the door before Keith could even get out a âno problemâ.
âWhat did those two want?â said Lance.
âThey just wanted to ask me some questions about Griffin.â
âIs that all? Â And here I was hoping they were here to proposition you.â
âLance!â
âWhat? Â They were good-looking! Â I mean, did you see that lady? Â She was gorgeous! Â And the guy was a total dreamboat! Â You should have asked them to stay for drinks.â
Keith rolled his eyes, âIâm not going to risk getting arrested just so you can have some eye candy to look at over dinner. Â I feel like Iâm in enough trouble as it is.â
âWhy would you be in trouble?â
Keith rubbed his arm, âI dunno, I justâŚI got the vibe they were trying to get me to confess to something but they didnât want to come out and say what.â
âHey, listen, youâve done nothing wrong. Â You were just there when the body was found and they want to interview all the eyewitnessesâ
âThen why didnât they interview you? Â You were there too.â
âMaybe they plan on it. Â Maybe theyâll knock on my door tomorrow and then I can invite them to stay for drinks.â
Keith laughed, but it did little to chase away the uneasiness settling in his stomach.
***
âLance McClain? Â The Lance McClain?â
âThe Blue Nomad himself,â said Shiro, scrolling through the PBI files open on his laptop. Â The two of them had come to this coffee shop to regroup and process what they had just discovered.
Allura took a sip from the mocha she had ordered, âWell, I guess that clears up the mystery of where he went after dropping off our radar.â
Shiro nodded, âJeez, this guyâs had a lot of aliases. Â Alejandro Espinosa, Leandro Alvarez, Isamu Kurogane â thatâs from a stint in Japan.â
âWhat was he doing in Japan?â
âApparently he went over with a group of Jesuits and decided to take a decade-long vacation.â
âHeâs certainly lived a full life,â said Allura, âWho was he originally?â
âCarlos Montoya,â said Shiro, scrolling to the bottom of the file, âBorn in Cuba in the early 1500s. Â His father must have been a conquistador. Â It says here he turned during a smallpox outbreak but thatâs about all we know about him.â
âWell, whatâs he doing in a small American town? Â With a werewolf boyfriend no less?â
Shiro shrugged, âMaybe he got tired of wandering.â
âThink he has anything to do with the Griffin case?â
âItâŚdoesnât really seem like a vampireâs work, but I suppose we canât leave out any possibility.â
A middle-aged woman in a waitress uniform approached their table. Â Her name tag read âColleenâ.
âCan I get you a refill, maâam?â Colleen said to Allura.
âIâm all right for now, thank you,â said Allura, âItâs very good, though.â
Colleen nodded, âMy customers always say our drinks seem to make their whole day go better. Â You folks in town for the All Hallows Eve Festival?â
âThe what?â
âBig annual event coming up this weekend. Â People come from all over the state to sell handmade crafts, baked goods, that sort of thing. Â You should stop by, weâll have a booth set up by the town square this year.â
âWeâll be sure to check it out,â said Allura, giving the woman a polite nod.
âI hope to see you there. Â Oh, and if itâs vampire legends youâre interested in, you should talk to my daughter. Â Sheâs quite the researcher when it comes to local folklore.â
Shiro realized with a start that his laptop was still open, âYesâŚwellâŚthank you for the coffee.â
âOf course. Â Let me know if you need anything else.â
Once she was out of earshot, Shiro turned back to Allura, âThe All Hallows Eve Festival? Â Thatâs not good news. Â People from all over the country coming here when thereâs a man-eating monster on the loose?â
Allura nodded, âWell, now weâve got a deadline. Â We have until this weekend to find out what killed James Griffin and stop it.â
THE GRAND FINALE! Â Keith distributes in-flight snacks, Coran speaks with his supervisors, and Lance is half the man he used to be.
Hope youâve all enjoyed reading this fic as much as Iâve enjoyed sharing it!
At first, Keith assumed his near-death experience was making him see things. Â Surely that wasnât the actual grendel stalking its way down the street. Â Surely it couldnât be that big. Â Surely the screams of terror were just in his head and not actually being made by the festival-goers.
Sadly, lack of oxygen couldnât be blamed for this one.
His previous encounter with the grendel hadnât prepared him for how tall it would be. Â If anything, it seemed bigger now. Â Seeing it in the woods when he couldnât quite make out its form had been terrifying enough. Â Now, in the harsh light of day, the sight of it only froze his blood more. Â It made it more profane, somehow, to see it in the sunlight among the brightly colored booths and banners. Â More shocking in its wrongness.
The thing waded in among the tables, kicking them to the side effortlessly and reaching out with its impossibly long, gnarled fingers, trying to catch pedestrians as they scattered before it like rats.
Shiro and Allura, to their credit, were valiantly trying to evacuate the crowd, directing people to get indoors, away from the monster.
âYou guys need to get out of here!â said Shiro, ushering people into the hardware store.
âDo you even have a plan to stop that thing?â said Lance.
âWeâre open to suggestions,â said Allura.
âThereâs gotta be some way to stop it, right?â said Keith, âEverythingâs got a weakness. Â Silver, garlic, that sort of thing. Â Pidge, please tell me you came across a weakness while you were researching this thing.â
But Pidge was shaking her head, âIf it has a weakness, no oneâs discovered it yet. Â Itâs immune to everything. Â I mean, think about it, itâs pure evil. Â How are you supposed to killâ?â Â She froze.
âYou just got an idea, didnât you?â
Pidge pointed toward her familyâs booth, âThose treats we made for the festival.  Theyâve got anti-evil wards on them.  Theyâre pretty low-level individually, but if we got the grendel to eat all of them all togetherâŚâ
âItâs worth a shot,â said Shiro, âThereâs one problem, though. Â How are we gonna get this thing to eat them? Â I donât think muffins are on its diet.â
But now it was Keithâs turn to have an idea. Â âI think I know what to do. Â Shiro, Allura, get as many people out of harmâs way as you can.â
âAlready done,â said Allura.
âMom, Lance, Romelle, I need you guys to distract it. Â Run around, confuse it, but donât let it catch you. Â If you see any other pack members, tell them to do the same.â
âYou better not be planning on doing something stupid,â said Lance.
âItâll only be stupid if it doesnât work,â said Keith, âHunk, I need you to gather up those treats Pidge was talking about, as many as you can.â
âGot it,â said Hunk.
âAnd what about me?â said Pidge, âWhat should I do?â
âFollow me.â
Keith pulled Pidge across the street and into the hardware store. Â He pushed past the people huddled in fright near the door and into the cleaning supplies isle.
âYou mind explaining to me what weâre doing in here?â said Pidge.
âLooking for something that will let us get close to the monster without being eaten.â
âSomehow I donât think Windex and toilet brushes are gonna do that for us.â
âNo, but this might.â
Keith reached up and pulled a broom off the shelf.
Pidge groaned, âAre you serious? Â A witch making a broomstick fly? Â Thatâs such a stereotype!â
âCan you do it or not?â
âOf course I can do it, Iâm the most talented goddamn witch in town.â
Keith and Pidge pushed their way through the crowd once more and raced back outside. Â Hunk was hurriedly gathering muffins, donuts, and tarts onto one of the trays.
âI think this is all of them,â he said, âLetâs hope itâs enough.â
Keith flipped up the front of his shirt to make a pouch and Hunk poured the treats in.
âPidge, howâs it coming with the flying broomstick?â
âAlmost there,â said Pidge, taking a small piece of chalk out of her pocket and drawing runes on the handle of the broom.
The grendel, meanwhile, was thankfully preoccupied, distracted by the many wolves now running circles around its feet. Â Keith recognized Kolivan, Antok, and of course his own mother, with Romelle riding along on her back. Â Lance seemed to be holding his own too, darting in close to the monster and then scrambling out of reach once it spotted him.
âOver here!â he yelled, whacking the beast with his umbrella, âKiss my ass, you ugly fucker!â
But as quick as he was, the grendel was just a little bit faster. Â It scooped him up in its claws and lifted him up to eye level.
âCome on!â Lance spat at the monster, âYou want a piece of me?â
Apparently it did. Â The grendel gripped Lance with both hands and ripped him in half, tossing the two halves aside.
âLance, no!â Keith screamed.
âKeith, we gotta go!â Pidge yelled, now standing astride the broomstick.
âNo! Â No, Lanceâ!â
âHeâs a vampire, heâll be fine! Â But we gotta stop this thing!â
She was right, of course. Â There was no time for fear or even anger. Â Keith adjusted his makeshift pouch of baked goods and swung a leg over the broomstick behind Pidge.
In a way, riding the broomstick was a bit like riding a bike. Â If that bike had no seat and would lead to instant death if you fell off. Â Keith gripped Pidgeâs shoulder with one hand while trying to keep treats from spilling out of his shirt with the other.
âHow do you want to do this?â Pidge shouted above the noise of the wind whistling past them.
âJust fly directly above it. Â Iâll figure it out from there.â
In truth, he didnât have much of a plan. Â His first idea was to dump the treats as they flew over the mouth, but the risk of missing and losing the pastries was too great. Â A more direct approach was needed and Keith didnât like what it entailed.
Pidge steered the broom upward. Â She circled the grendelâs head once, twice, to get its attention, then hovered over its massive head. Â The beast craned its neck up to get a good look at them, growling lowly in its throat, its head pointed straight up.
âNow what?â said Pidge.
âNow your jobâs done,â said Keith, slipping off the back of the broom.
Pidgeâs cries for him to stop were lost as the air whistled past his ears.
Somehow, he managed to land on his feet. Â The beastâs mouth was still closed and Keith had landed on the tip of its muzzle, his legs straddling its lips.
He swayed, the vertigo of being up so high making him dizzy. Â The grendel glared up at him with its glowing malicious eyes. Â It opened its mouth slightly, nearly causing Keith to lose his balance, and snarled, its long, sinuous tongue unfurling from its jaws and reaching up for Keith.
Keith let go of the hem of his shirt and a cascade of muffins and donuts fell into the creatureâs mouth.
The effects were immediate. Â The grendel writhed in pain as it realized its mistake. Â The motion knocked Keith off balance and he flew a good distance through the air before landing hard on the street below. Â He had the good sense to roll as he landed, minimizing the damage, but it didnât prevent him from hearing a loud snap! and feeling a sharp pain in his ankle.
He rolled onto his side, facing the grendel just in time to see it fall to the ground. Â It squirmed on the pavement and screeched in pain as wisps of smoke escaped its mouth. Â Finally, it gave a great groan, shuddered once, twice, three times, and was still.
Keith rolled onto his back and closed his eyes, exhaustion catching up to him.
Shiro was the first to reach him.
âKeith.  Hey, Keith.  Come on, wake up, this isnât a great place for a nap.â
Keith groaned. Â He didnât feel like moving from this spot ever again.
âCome on, buddy, I need you to stay with me. Â Are you okay?â
âYes,â said Keith, âNo. Â I think my ankleâs broken.â
âIâll get you some medical attention, Keith, donât worry. Â Here, give me your arm.â
Shiro slung Keithâs arm over his shoulder and helped him hobble off to the sidewalk where the injured were being gathered. Â He set him down next to Lance, who was lying in the shade. Â Or at least most of him was.
âDid we win?â said Lance, who seemed to be just regaining consciousness himself.
âYeah, I think we did,â said Keith, âHow are you feeling?â
âI feel fine,â said Lance, but he then frowned and wriggled a bit, âWhy canât I feel my legs?â
âWellâŚâ
Lance propped himself up on his elbows and looked down at where his legs were supposed to be, âWell, shit. Â Thatâs no good.â
Meanwhile, Pidge had landed her broom and was now rushing over with Hunk close on her heels.
âYou dumbass!â she snapped, hitting Keith over the head with the brush end of the broom, âDammit, Keith, warn me next time youâre about to do dumb shit like that!â
âHey, when youâre done abusing my poor brave heroic boyfriend, do you think you could go look for my legs? Â I seem to have misplaced them,â said Lance.
âI gotcha, buddy,â said Hunk, turning and searching the nearby tables for Lanceâs other half.
âIn all seriousness, though,â said Lance softly, placing his hand over Keithâs, âI do think you were very brave.â
Keith was about to reply when he was nearly tackled by his mother and Romelle, who pulled him into a hug.
âOw! Â Mom, watch the leg,â he groaned, which earned him a bit of personal space.
There were tears spilling out of Kroliaâs eyes. Â âMy brave pup,â she whispered, stroking his hair, âIâm so proud of you.â
âAs am I,â Â Keith looked up and saw Kolivan smiling down at him, with most of the pack gathered around him, âWhat you did was heroic. Â An action worthy of an alpha.â
âI donât know about that,â said Keith, blushing and looking away. Â Lance squeezed his hand and gave him a reassuring smile.
Krolia helped him lean back so he could lay his head in her lap, âThe others will find a medic to look at your leg. Â Just relax now, sweetheart, okay? Â Youâve earned it.â
***
In his time on earth, Lance had survived many things. Â Being burnt, stabbed, hanged, drowned, shot at, bludgeoned over the head, and even, thanks to an ill-timed vacation to France, decapitated.
Being ripped in half was a new one for him, though.
Eventually, Hunk did find his legs. They were on the next street over, wandering around in search of a torso. Â Shiro held him still while Hunk lined them up so they could be reattached properly.
Once he was all in one piece again, Lance got up to look around for a medic to look after Keith. Â It had been a while since his fall and his ankle was still very obviously broken. Â Not that he blamed the first-responders for their inattention. Â Sadly, there were many, many injuries to be tended to.
He noticed Shiro standing near an overturned booth and waved to get his attention. Â âHey, do you think someone couldââ Â But Shiro held a finger to his lips to shush him and pointed.
Coran was standing a few feet away, talking to a very tallâŚsomeone.  It hurt for Lance to look at them directly, like staring into the sun too long.  All he could really make out was that the person was easily a head taller than anyone else in the crowd, had six enormous wings unfolding from their back, and had about a thousand eyes on every available surface of their body.  The being put a hand on Coranâs shoulder and said something Lance couldnât hear.  Coran nodded and the being disappeared in a flash of light.
Lance blinked the spots out of his eyes, âWas thatâŚ?â
âA messenger,â said Coran, âI guess you could think of them as my supervisor.â
Shiro was also rubbing his eyes to get his vision back to normal, âYouâd think theyâd choose a moreâŚuser-friendly appearance.â
âThat was their user-friendly appearance. Â But the good news is, they left me a few gifts! Â For one, I now have the gift of divine healing. Â They figured Iâd need it with this crowd.â
âOkay, cool,â said Lance, ââCause Keithâs ankle is still hella broken.â
âRight. Â Iâll get on that.â
âWhat was their other gift?â said Shiro.
âOh, right,â Coran reached into his coat pocket and pulled out Lotor, who looked about as unhappy as a teddy bear could, âThey also put a sacred seal on our fuzzy new friend here. Â He wonât be getting out of this form for quite some time.â
âYou cannot do this!â Lotor protested, âThis is cruel! Â Itâs inhumane!â
âYou should be used to it then,â said Coran, just as the group reached Keith, âAh, there you are, my boy! Â Howâs the ankle?â
âUhâŚnot great,â said Keith, âI mean, itâs feeling a little better but it stillââ
Coran placed his hand on Keithâs ankle. Â There was a loud pop! and Keith gave a yelp, more out of surprise than pain.
âNow how does it feel?â
Keith held his leg up in the air and rolled his ankle a few times. Â âBetter. Â Much better.â
Pidge and Hunk, who were helping to clear away the tables and debris, came over to join the group. Â âYou feeling better, man?â asked Hunk.
âI am now,â said Keith, getting to his feet.
Coran tossed Lotor to Pidge, âI believe your mother bought this for you? Â Something about putting him on the counter to encourage tips.â
Lotor crossed his stubby arms, âI will not be put on display like some tacky knick-knack.â
âAre you sure?â said Pidge, âI could always donate you to a local preschool otherwise.â
âOh, all right, Iâll take the lesser of two evils.â
âAre you guys doing all right?â Lance asked Hunk and Pidge.
âWell, I just watched all of yesterdayâs hard work get dumped down the throat of a giant man-eating monster,â said Hunk, âbut on the bright side, we did defeat it and save the town, so thatâs cool.â
Coran nudged Shiroâs arm, âSee? Â I told you theyâd be useful.â
âWhenâŚdid you say that exactly?â
âWhen I was telling you about my vision,â said Coran, âRemember the four individuals? Â The leader,â Coran pointed at Keith, âThe protector,â he pointed at Hunk, âThe scholar,â he pointed at Pidge, âAnd the wanderer.â Finally, he pointed at Lance.
âHuh,â said Shiro, thoroughly baffled, âWell, how about that?â
Allura was just wrapping up a phone conversation as she wandered over and stood next to Shiro, âJust got off the phone with headquarters. Â Theyâre sending over some agents to clear away the body.â
âSo I guess youâre leaving soon,â said Lance, unable to hide the disappointment in his voice.
âWe still need to do some debriefing, but yes, we should probably leave soon so we can report back to our superiors.â
âWeâll really miss you,â said Keith.
âI wouldnât feel too sad about it,â said Shiro, fishing around in his pocket and pulling out a business card, âConsidering all the weird stuff that happens here, this is probably not the last time weâre called out to this town.â
He handed the business card to Lance.
âGive us a call if you see something strange,â said Shiro, âOr if you just feel like catching up.â
Back at it again with more spooky fun. Â Coran finds weird uses for a communion wafer. Â Lance accepts an offer heâd rather refuse. Â Answers are finally found.

âGod, the Father of mercies, through the death and resurrection of his Son has reconciled the world to himself  and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins; through the ministry of the Church, may God give you pardon and peace, and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.â
âAmen,â Lance murmured.
âMay the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of all the saints, whatever good you do and suffering you endure heal your sins, help you to grow in holiness, and reward you with eternal life. Go in peace.â Coran said from the other side of the screen.
âAlready got the eternal life bit, thanks,â said Lance, under his breath.
âDo we need to do this again so you can confess to sassing a prophet?â
âNah, Iâm good.â Lance stepped out of the confession booth.
âHow about Mass? Â When was the last time you had that?â Coran asked, also exiting the booth.
âI think I can go without tonight.â
âWell, letâs test that, shall we?â said Coran, reaching over to the altar and picking up a communion wafer from the dish. Â He approached Lance and pressed the wafer to his forehead.
Lance winced. Â When Coran pulled the wafer away, a slight pink mark appeared where it had been.
âBetter to be safe than sorry. Â Iâll get the blood bag.â
âIt didnât hurt that muchâŚâ
âItâs not supposed to hurt at all,â Coran pointed out, âIf you want to take care of your immortal soul then youâve got to take the treatments.â
Lance sighed, âOh, all right.â Â He certainly understood why he took Mass. Â He was the one who had asked Coran to help him find a way to do so, his familyâs faith one of the few ties to his past he had left. Â That didnât mean it wasnât frustrating, having to take Mass nearly every night just so he could walk past a crucifix without fear of getting a headache.
Lance watched as Coran retrieved the cup used specifically for vampire-friendly Mass (no need for the other congregants to drink wine from a cup that had had blood in it the night before) and poured blood from a blood bag into it. Â He then recited the invocation and presented Lance with the cup. Â Lance drank it down.
âThere,â said Coran, âLetâs try this again.â Â He picked up the communion wafer and touched it to Lanceâs forehead once more.
âNothing,â said Lance, âNow youâre just a guy holding a cracker up to another guyâs forehead.â
âGood. Â That means it worked,â Coran set the wafer down and patted Lance on the shoulder, âIâm glad you stopped by tonight, Lance, itâs always nice to see you. Â Tell Keith I said hi and try not to get into too much trouble.â
Lance smirked, âBut youâd be out of a job if I didnât.â
âIâm serious, son.  If you come in here next week and tell me that youâveâŚI donât knowâŚeaten a five-year-old or somethingââ
âCoran! Â I would never! Â Five-year-olds arenât nearly ripe enough to eat.â
Coran raised an eyebrow.
âKidding, just kidding,â said Lance, âYou take care of yourself, Coran. Â Iâll see you tomorrow.â
As Lance exited St. Groggeryâs, he noticed a man across the street, standing by a rather expensive-looking car and illuminating the pavement with his phoneâs flashlight.
The man looked up and noticed him, âExcuse me, do you think you can help me with something?â
Lance crossed the street, âWhat do you need, man?â
âI seem to have dropped my keys, could you help me find them?â
Lance almost didnât catch the manâs words. Â Up close, he was strikingly attractive. Â Tall as hell and slender, but not without muscle. Â His facial features were an elegant, refined sort of handsome and his long platinum-blond hair showed signs of being well cared-for.
âSure,â said Lance, âSure, let me justâŚâ He knelt down and peeked under the car while the stranger held the flashlight, not that he needed it to see in the dark.  After a moment, he spotted the keys and fished them out.
âHere you go.â
âThank you so much. Â I was worried theyâd gone down a storm drain. Â I donât know what I would have done if you hadnât come along.â Â The man put his hand on Lanceâs arm. Â Lance had mixed feelings about the gesture, though he couldnât seem to bring himself to shake the other man off.
âOh, it was nothing really.â
âStill, Iâd like to show my gratitude in some way. Â How about I get you a drink?â
âI, uh, I donât drinkâŚalcohol.â
âI know,â said the man, pulling the collar of his shirt down slightly to reveal his collarbone.
Bad idea, said Lanceâs brain, even as his arms reached for the man and his legs carried him forward.
The man pulled him into a nearby alleyway and pressed him against the wall.  Lanceâs head spun.  He could already smell the manâs blood, could practically taste it on his tongue.  It would taste so good to have blood straight from the source for once.  The last time he had had a fresh meal wasâŚ
That snapped Lance out of his trance. Â The only person he did this with anymore was Keith. Â You just got out of confession and already youâre trying to eat from a stranger, whatâs wrong with you? Â Lance took a step back, âIâm sorry, I really shouldnât. Â I need to get homeââ
His words were cut off as the man shoved him backwards against the wall, a hand wrapped around his throat. Â Lance tried to shake him off, but the stranger only pushed him harder into the bricks, lifting him off his feet with astonishing strength. Â Lance squirmed against the manâs grip. Â It would take more than choking to kill him, but the lack of oxygen was making his head spin.
Something hard and pointed pressed against his chest, right above his heart. Â Lance looked down. Â The man was holding a wooden stake, poised to stab him with it.
âI assume you know what that is. Â If you so much as scream, itâll be the last noise you ever make.â
The man set Lance back on his feet.
âWhat do you want?â Lance hissed, rubbing his throat.
âYouâve encountered two individuals by the names of Agents Shirogane and Prince, yes?â
âYeahâŚâ said Lance, remembering the agents that had come to Keithâs house the other day.
âThey work for an organization known as the Paranormal Bureau of Investigation. Â An organization that hunts down creatures like you and me.â
âWhatâs your point?â
âI want you to kill them for me.â
Lanceâs lip curled in disgust, âLetâs assume I have any intention of humoring you. Â Give me one good reason why I should do this.â
âBesides the fact that they would hunt you down and throw you in a cage if they knew what you are?â
Lance shrugged, âPlenty of people have tried to hunt me down before. Â No oneâs caught me yet.â
âI figured youâd need a bit of extra motivation,â the man pulled out his phone and pulled up an image, âHow about this, then?â
Lanceâs stomach dropped. Â A picture of Keith filled the screen.
âHeâs your lover, isnât he?  Such a handsome boyâŚIt would certainly be a shame if anything unfortunate happened to that lovely face.â
âListen,â Lance growled, âIf you think you can scare meâŚâ
âNot good enough? Â How about this, then,â Â The man swiped across the screen and an image of two children playing in a backyard slid into view. Â The picture was slightly blurry, as though it was taken covertly.
âThese are yourâŚoh, what was it?âŚgreat-great-grandchildren?  I donât know how you keep track.  Their names are Nadia and Sylvio, arenât they?â
âYou wouldnât dareâŚâ whispered Lance.
âYou donât want to know what I would dare to do.â Â The man let Lance go. Â âYou have until Saturday. Â If Agents Shirogane and Prince are not dead by then, I will personally track down and kill everyone you love. Â Oh, and one more thing,â the man turned and faced Lance once more, âWhen you do kill those agents, be sure to tell them Lotor sent you.â

In addition to its quality coffee and friendly customer service, Mochas & Magic also sold second-hand books. Â Allura figured that was as good a place as any to do research on local folklore.
She had decided to perform this particular task solo. Â Shiro was busy interviewing Mr. and Mrs. Griffin about the incident and Allura figured she might get better results if she went alone anyway. Â If this Colleen womanâs daughter really had information on New Alteaâs supernatural population, she might benefit more from a girl-to-girl chat.
As Allura pushed open the door to the coffee shop, she heard Colleenâs voice ring out, âWelcome to Mochas & Magic! Â Come on in!â
Colleen was stationed behind the register today. Â Beside her was a rather large young man in an apron, sliding trays of blueberry scones into the display case.
âOh, I remember you,â said Colleen, as Allura approached the counter, âYou and that young man were in here yesterday, talking about vampires.â
âYes, that, uh, that was me,â said Allura, trying to keep her voice down. Â The young man in the apron was giving her a strange look. Â âYou mentioned your daughter knowing a lot about folklore. Â I was wondering if I could talk with her for a bit.â
âWell, Iâm sure sheâd be happy to discuss it with you. Â Hunk, do you know where Katie is?â
âI think sheâs shelving books right now,â said Hunk, still not taking his eyes off of Allura.
âThank you,â said Allura, âThatâs very helpful of you.â
âAre you writing a YA novel?â said Colleen.
âHm?â
âIs your research for a YA novel? Â We get a lot of authors in here doing research for novels theyâre writing.â
âItâs just for a personal project,â said Allura, before making her way to the bookstore section of the shop.
A young woman in her early twenties was stocking the shelves, climbing a stepladder to reach the highest ones. Â She had short, brown hair and large, round glasses.
âIâm almost done,â the woman said, âOne moment.â
âAre you Katie?â asked Allura.
âYeah, but you can call me Pidge,â the woman said, stepping down from the ladder, âWhat can I do for you?â
âI was hoping you could help me find some books on a certain subject,â said Allura, casually scanning the bookshelf nearest to her.
âDepends on the subject, I guess,â said Pidge, âWhat were you looking for?â
Allura picked up one of the books off the shelf. Â The cover was emblazoned with the word Beowulf. Â She flipped through the pages idly. Â âIâm just looking for information on some of the creatures in this area.â
âLike what? Â Foxes and raccoons?â
âMore like werewolves and vampires.â
There was the barest flicker of worry on Pidgeâs face, but it soon disappeared. Â âI hate to disappoint you, maâam, but creatures like that donât actually exist.â
âBut your mother said people came here to research the subject all the time.â
âWell, yeah, but not like actual researchers. Â Cryptid hunters and teen romance novelists, those kinds of people.â
Without warning, Allura tossed the book she was holding directly at Pidgeâs head. Â Pidge yelped and held up her hand and the book stopped just short of her face, hovering in midair.
âAre you sure?â said Allura.
Pidge lowered her hand and the book dropped to the ground, falling open, âWell, shit. Â You werenât supposed to see that.â
âWell, now that weâre done with the playacting, we can get straight to business. Â What can you tell me about the werewolves in this area?â
But Pidge didnât seem to be in a cooperative mood at the moment. Â âYouâre one of the agents who interviewed Keith, arenât you?â she said.
âSo you know Mr. Kogane, do you? Â Can you tell me anything about his whereabouts on the night of James Griffinâs death?â
âI knew it!â said Pidge, ignoring her question, âI knew there was some sort of men-in-black thing for supernatural beings. Â Are you part of the government?â
âNow whoâs being a conspiracy theorist?â
âItâs not a conspiracy theory if youâre right.â
âLook,â said Allura, âI donât want to accuse your friend any more than you do. Â If thereâs anything, anything at all you can share with me that might help clear his name, it would go a long way toward helping him.â
Pidge sighed, âListen, I canât give you any hard evidence, but whatever youâre looking for, whatever killed Griffin, itâs not a werewolf.â
âIâm not saying I donât believe you,â said Allura, âbut how do you know this?â
âBecause I did some scrying. Â We went to the place where the body was found and I contacted Griffinâs spirit and saw what he saw when he died. Â And let me tell you, it wasnât a werewolf that killed him.â
âWell, what was it, then?â said Allura, âCan you describe it?â
âIt was dark, so Griffin didnât get a good look at it. Â But it was big. Â Bigger than a werewolf, thatâs for sure.â
âSo, a bear?â
Pidge shook her head, âBigger than that, even.  And it had these hornsâŚâ  She held up her hands near her head to illustrate, âAnd these eyes that glowed and it looked likeâŚlike aâŚâ  She glanced down to think and froze.
âLike what?â said Allura.
âLike that.â
Pidge pointed down at the book on the floor by her feet. Â It was open to an illustration depicting a huge, horned creature with a human grasped in its enormous hand. Â The caption on the page read, âGrendel carrying his prey to his lairâ.
For a moment, Pidge and Allura could barely move. Â Then, Pidge scooped up the book. Â âI have to show this to Hunk.â
âI have to make a phone call,â said Allura as Pidge left the room.
Allura pulled out her cell phone and called Shiro. Â âCome on, please pick up, please pick up, itâs important.â
After the second ring, Shiro answered, âAllura? Â Something wrong?â
âShiro, you owe that Kogane kid an apology.â
âHmm? Â Whyâs that?â

Gonna be busy over the weekend, so you guys get this chapter a little early! Â Lance brings a present to the festival, Pidge isnât feeling like herself, and Hunk is a badass in an unexpected way.
Enjoy!
The All Hallowâs Eve festival was finally here and, as usual, Pidge was helping her family set up their booth.
After taping the large banner Matt had made reading âBaked Goods from Mochas & Magicâ to the front of their table, Pidge and Hunk set out trays of the treats themselves. Â They arranged maple donuts, pecan tarts, and every type of pumpkin-flavored dessert imaginable into aesthetically-pleasing shapes. Â Pidge double-checked that all the spells on the treats were properly applied. There were the classics: charms to ensure a good harvest and wards against evil, but also ones that Pidge herself had designed to fit the Halloween spirit: good-luck spells to ensure pranks went smoothly, minor glamours to give any costume extra pizazz, and protection spells against unwanted jumpscares.
As she finished arranging everything, Pidge looked around at the other booths set up along the avenue, selling everything from street food to homemade Halloween knick-knacks to fall-themed accessories. Â Pedestrians were already wandering from booth to booth, eager to see what the vendors had to offer.
The All Hallowâs Eve festival was honestly one of Pidgeâs favorite events of the year. Â The vast majority of New Alteaâs population was supernatural and Halloween was one of the few days of the year when they didnât hold anything back. Â And the festival itself was a great draw for supernaturals from out of town.
Coran had set up the St. Groggeryâs booth just across the street from their own. Â Once they were done with their set-up, Pidge and Hunk wandered over to talk to him. Â He was handing out the churchâs newsletter, as well as some small, strange cards that Pidge didnât recognize.
âWhat are these?â Hunk asked, picking one up to study it. Â An image of St. Peter looked back at him.
âWell, All Saintâs Day is tomorrow,â Coran explained, âand one of the nuns thought it would be funny to make trading cards of different saints.â
âLike Pokemon?â Pidge snorted with laughter, âThatâs awesome! Â âThe Virgin Mary used Immaculate Conception! Â Itâs super effective!ââ
âYes, that was the idea. Â I donât suppose I could convince you to give me a free maple donut if I give you a limited edition St. George?â
Before long, Lance and Keith showed up as well, along with Keithâs family, most of whom immediately scattered throughout the street, following various delicious scents. Â Lance was carrying his umbrella to keep the worst of the sun off, as well as a briefcase for some strange reason.
âWhatâs in there?â Pidge asked, pointing at it, Â âMoney? Â You know, our pumpkin muffins arenât that expensive.â
âJust a gift for someone Iâm meeting here.â
Pidge raised an eyebrow but didnât push the issue further.
Meanwhile, Keith and Romelle had successfully bugged their mother into buying donuts for them. Â They chowed down while Krolia chatted with Pidgeâs mom about the teddy bears her cousin Antok was selling from his booth.
âHe makes them himself and sews little costumes for them. Â You should check them out, theyâre pretty cute.â
âWe should get one for the cafĂŠ,â Pidge said to her mom, âWe could put him next to the tip jar with a little sign that says âTip if you think Iâm cute!ââ
Pidgeâs mom chuckled, âThat does sound like a cute idea. Â You know what, I think I will get one. Â Where did you say Antokâs booth is?â Â She stepped out from behind the table so Krolia could show her the way. Â Romelle tagged along behind them, eager to see more of the festival.
âSo,â said Lance, after the two moms had wandered out of earshot, âany news about ourâŚâ he held up his hands to resemble antlers, ââŚhorny friend?â
âListen, if I never see that grendel thing again for as long as I live, it will be too soon,â said Pidge, âAlso, please for the love of everything holy, never call it that.â
âLance?â said Keith, between bites of donut, âThat man across the street is looking at you.â
All four of them turned to see who Keith was indicating. Â A tall, platinum-blond man stood across the street in front of the hardware store, staring intently in their direction.
Pidge shivered. Â Hunk put an arm around her shoulder. Â She noticed Lance angling himself so that he was blocking Keith from the manâs line of sight.
The man began walking toward them, giving Coranâs booth a wide berth as he crossed the street.
âWell, Lance,â the man said as he approached them, his voice silky-smooth, âIt certainly is good to see you here. Â I hope you did that favor I asked.â
Lanceâs expression was cold, âCan we please discuss this somewhere private?â
âNo, I think Iâd rather discuss it somewhere public.â the man said lazily, âWe wouldnât want your little friends here to think youâre hiding something.â
âLance, what is he talking about?â said Hunk.
Lance didnât answer him. Â Instead, he handed his umbrella to Keith, lifted up his briefcase, and opened it.
Inside were various articles of clothing, a suit jacket, a dress shirt, a womanâs blazer, a pencil skirt, all covered in bloodstains. Â Pidgeâs stomach turned.
âI did what you asked, now leave me alone.â
âNot so fast,â said the man, lifting up the dress shirt, âI just want to make sure. Â Young man, your nameâs Keith, isnât it? Â Can you tell me whose shirt this is?â
Keith sniffed the air, âThatâs Shiroâs shirt, but howâŚ?â  He suddenly grew pale.
âAnd is this Shiroâs blood on the shirt?â
Keith turned toward Lance. Â âLance, you didnât. Â Thereâs got to be some mistake. Â Lance, tell me you didnâtââ
âI canât tell you that,â Lance cut him off.
âWell, Lance, I must say, Iâm impressed.â said the man, âI didnât think you had the spine to pull it off. Â Iâm surprised to say I was wrong.â
âOh, Iâm full of surprises,â said Lance. Â He reached into the briefcase, under the clothes, pulling out a small plastic water pistol and spraying the man in the face.
At first, Pidge thought it was simply a poorly-timed prank. Â But then the manâs face began to break out in boils, filling the air with the smell of burning flesh. Â He wailed in pain and many of the pedestrians stared, backing away from him.
âWhat the hell?â Pidge heard Hunk whisper faintly.
âI think you might be on the right track,â she whispered back.
âYou horrible little bloodsucker!â the man snarled, trying to wipe the water out of his eyes with his sleeve, âIâll kill you for that!â
âNot if we can help it.â
Pidge looked up.  There, standing across the street next to Coranâs booth were Shiro and Allura, holdingâŚ
âAre those Super Soakers?â asked Keith.
âItâs over, Lotor,â Allura called from across the street, âYouâre under arrest.â
âAnd weâre making sure it sticks this time,â Shiro added.
The man, Lotor apparently, growled, âItâs not over by a long shot.â Â Having gotten the water out of his eyes, he scanned the crowd.
His gaze landed on Pidge.
âYouâll do,â he said.
Then suddenly, where the man had stood moments before, there was a cloud of smoke. Â The smoke rushed past Lance and over the table, straight at Pidge. Â It surrounded her, filling her nose and mouth. Â Her vision went black.
Oh, yes, said a voice in her head that wasnât her own, Youâll do quite nicely.
***
One moment, Hunk had his arm around Pidge. Â The next, she yanked herself out of his grasp and leaped over the table, knocking trays of pastries to the ground.
âPidge, whatâ?â
Pidge turned toward him and he froze. Â Her eyes were solid black.
âWell, this ought to do nicely,â she said, but it wasnât her voice coming out of her mouth. Â Lotorâs voice was layered over hers, creating an unsettling echo. Â âA little short for my tastes, but certainly a spry young thing.â
Keith, who was standing closest to Pidge, took a step forward, âPidge? Â What is this?â
Pidge reached for him and wrapped a hand around his throat.
Keith dropped the umbrella he was holding and gasped. Â He gripped Pidgeâs wrist, trying to loosen her grip, but she only squeezed tighter, lifting him off the ground with inhuman strength. Â His feet dangled as he tried to kick at her, his face turning red from lack of oxygen.
âI told you, Lance,â she said in Lotorâs voice, âIf you failed me, I would kill everyone you care about. Â Starting with this shaggy-headed little lapdog of yours.â
âNo, donât!â said Lance. Â He turned toward Agent Shirogane, âShiro, spray her with the holy water!â
But Shiro was shaking his head, âI canât, itâll hurt her too!â
Lance turned toward Hunk, âHunk, do something!â
âDo what? Â Thereâs nothing I canâ!â Â But there was something he could do. Â He hated doing it, of course, it was one of his least favorite powers.
Still. Â Pidge needed his help.
Normally, it took a fair bit of concentration for Hunk to maintain his physical appearance. Â Now, he let it go, becoming only a vague shape of a human. Â He passed through the table, as easy as passing through fog, and came up behind Pidge. Â She snapped her head in his direction as he approached.
âWhat do you think youâreâ?â
Hunk took the opportunity. Â He floated toward her, then through her, into her, pushing his way into her consciousness and possessing her.
It was a little crowded in here for his tastes. Â Lotor took up the most room, his presence forming an inky black cloud that nearly pushed Hunk out again. Â For one frightening moment, he couldnât find Pidge at all. Â Eventually, though, he did locate her, a small but bright entity pressed up against the edge of her own mind, trying to shove Lotorâs massive presence out of the way to give her more room.
âHey,â he said reaching for her.
âHunk?â she said, reaching back for him. Â He caught her and pulled her towards him.
âAre you okay?â he said.
âIâm alrightâŚI think.  This guy keeps pushing me to the back.  I canât even tell whatâs going on out there.â
âI know,â said Hunk, âI think weâve got to push him back out from in here.â
âHow do we do that?â
âItâs your brain. Â Youâve got to reject him, force him out. Â Here, Iâll help you.â
It wasnât an easy task. Â Lotor hadnât been here long but he was already rooting his way into the nooks and crannies of Pidgeâs brain, determined to anchor himself. Â Hunk yanked his grip loose wherever he could, while Pidge tried to shove him out, expanding to fill the spaces where he had lost purchase.
At first, it seemed like Lotorâs grip on her mind was too strong. Â But then Pidge gave a final shove and suddenly Lotor was ejected from her mind.
âYou did it!â said Hunk wrapping himself around her in a hug.
âWe did it,â said Pidge.  She returned the hug before pulling away slightly.  âGod, this feels so weird.  Itâs better because I know itâs you, butâŚif you donât mind, would you please exit my brain?â
âRight, of course. Â Iâll leave you to your thoughts.â said Hunk, before stepping out of Pidgeâs mind and back into the physical world.
ââhim before he gets his strength back!â Allureâs voice was the first to reach his ears, as she shouted orders, âCoran, how fast can you bless this garden hose?â
Hunk was hit full in the face with the chaos of the scene. Â Vendors and pedestrians were crowded around the group in a circle, clamoring to see what all the noise was about. Â Hunk spotted Colleen among them, clutching a small teddy bear in a pumpkin costume with one hand and frantically pointing at her daughter with the other, saying something to Krolia that Hunk couldnât quite hear. Â Pidge was doubled over, trying to catch her breath after being possessed by two different people. Â Keith was on the ground, gasping and coughing while Lance hovered over him protectively. Â Allura was standing by the entrance to the hardware store, holding the nozzle of a garden hose while Shiro frantically tried to screw the other end into a spout on the side of the building and Coran repeatedly made the sign of the cross over it. Â And Lotor was on the pavement, back in his human form and shakily getting to his feet.
âYouâŚâ he growled, turning in Hunkâs direction, âYouâll pay for this!â  He swung his fist at him.
Lotorâs hand passed harmlessly through Hunk, throwing him off balance.
Hunk grabbed a tray from the table and brought it down on Lotorâs head.
Lotor reeled several steps backward, before being knocked forwards again by a stream of holy water as Allura sprayed him with the hose. Â He shrieked in pain and fell to the ground again, shriveling up on himself and sending up billows of foul-smelling smoke.
âThatâll hold him but not for long,â said Allura, dropping the hose, âCoran, please tell me youâve got some way to contain him.â
âI can but Iâll need a vessel to put him in.  A doll or somethingâŚâ
Pidge stood up straight, âI know what we can use.â Â She turned toward her mother, âMom! Â Mom, throw me the bear!â
Colleen tossed the pumpkin-clad teddy bear to Pidge, who tossed it to Coran, who caught it and began chanting in Latin.
At once, the smoke billowing off of Lotor began to flow into the bear as Lotorâs form dissolved before them.
âNo! No!â Lotor shouted before the last of his form disappeared into the toy.
âYou cannot do this!â the bear shouted in Lotorâs silky-smooth voice, which had lost much of its intimidation coming out of a plush toy the size of a rabbit.
âQuiet, you,â said Coran, giving the toy a shake.
Colleen, meanwhile, had muscled her way out of the crowd and was pulling Pidge into a hug, while Krolia and Romelle knelt down next to Keith.
âAre you okay, sweetheart? Â Are you hurt?â said Colleen, stroking Pidgeâs hair.
âIâm okay, Mom, really.â
âAnd you,â said Colleen, letting go of Pidge and giving Hunk a hug, âI canât thank you enough.â
âI-Itâs not a problem, Mrs. Holt, Iâd do it again in a heartbeat.â Â Hunk turned toward Allura, âSo what happens now?â
âNow we all calm down and see about locking him up properly this time,â said Allura, nodding toward the teddy bear that was now Lotor, âAs long as thereâs no more excitement, I think weâll be justââ
She was interrupted by a loud roar.
The entire crowd turned as one in the direction of the noise. Â In the distance, its horned head rising above even the rooftops, loomed an enormous beast.
Lance has a heart-to-heart with his future alpha-in-law. Â Shiro and Allura are stressed for a variety of reasons.
Enjoy!
If there was one thing Lance knew about Kolivan, it was that he liked his privacy.
After all, why else would he live in what was little more than a trailer home in the middle of the woods?
It took Lance forever to find the place, driving up and down roads that were only dirt and gravel and probably didnât even have names. Â Eventually, though, he did find the house and knocked on the door.
Kolivan opened the door a crack, keeping the chain fastened, âWhat do you want? Â If youâre selling somethingââ
âIâm not,â Lance interjected, âI need your help.â
Kolivan seemed to hesitate a moment, before unlatching the door chain and ushering Lance inside.
The decor was about what Lance expected, functional and masculine, no frills or fuss. Â Kolivan gestured to a table with two chairs and they both sat down.
âNow,â said Kolivan, âWhatâs this visit about?â
âI think Keith might be in danger,â said Lance.
âKeith is an adult. Â He can take care of himself.â
âNo, you donât understand,â said Lance, âIâm being blackmailed and the person blackmailing me is threatening Keithâs life.â
That made Kolivan sit up and take notice, âWho is this person?â
âI donât really know, Iâd never met him before. Â He said his name was Lotor and that heâd kill Keith if I didnât do what he asked. Â I canât let that happen.â
Kolivan frowned, âStrangeâŚâ
âWhatâs strange?â
âIâm just confused as to why you seem so concerned about Keithâs death.â
Lance stared, incredulous, âBecause I care about him? Â What the fuck, Kolivan, heâs part of your pack! Â Donât you care about his death?â
âYes, but thatâs because Iâm mortal like he is.â
Lance sat back in his chair. Â He was beginning to see what Kolivanâs problem was.
âI suppose Iâve never heard of a vampire caring for a mortal so much. Â I want to know why. Â If youâre just going to outlive him, why bother forming this kind of connection?â
Lance thought for a moment, âI guess itâs because I need him. Â You know heâs not the first person Iâve had a romantic relationship with, right?â
âI figured as much,â said Kolivan, âNo doubt youâve had a whole slew of lovers in your time on earth.â
âNot just lovers,â said Lance, âMy last wife was a woman named Jenny. Â I loved her from the moment I met her to the moment she died. Â When our kids were born, I loved them too. Â And when our grandkids were born, I loved them as well. Â I love Keith no less than I loved any of them. Â And if we have kids someday, Iâm going to love them too.â
âIt sounds heartbreaking,â said Kolivan, âLoving so many people and having to watch them die.â
âWell yeah, it is,â said Lance, âBut the alternative is trying not to feel anything about other people, and that never ends well.  Other vampires have tried that and they end up being the ones you read about in the horror stories.  If I didnât have people to care aboutâŚif I didnât have KeithâŚIâd turn into as big a monster as people say I am.â
Kolivan studied him, âYou know, Lance, I wasnât sure about you when I first met you.â
âYeah, I noticed.â
âBut now I think you might be exactly what Keith needs as well.â
Lance perked up, âSo youâll help me?â
âFirst you have to tell me how to help you. Â What does this Lotor person want you to do for him?â
âHe wants me to kill these two people. Â Their names are Agents Shirogane and Prince. Â I donât know what they did to this guy, but he wants them dead badly. Â I donât want to do it, they seem like theyâre not bad people, but I canât risk him hurting Keith.â
âI would think you could hold your own against a simple human if it came down to defending Keith from him.â
Lance shook his head, âHeâs not just a simple human.  HeâsâŚwell, Iâm not sure what he is.  I donât think heâs a witch, but he can doâŚthings.  Mess with your mind and stuff like that.â
Kolivan got out of his chair and stood next to Lance, âThen weâll need help from our pack to take him down.â
âOur?â said Lance.
âYes,â said Kolivan, the barest hint of a smile on his face, âIf Keithâs mate needs my help, who am I to refuse?â
***
It was the night before Halloween and Shiro was about ready to tear his hair out.
He stewed in his frustration as he and Allura walked back to their hotel for the night. Â Tomorrow was the All Hallows Eve festival. Â The whole town would be filled with people coming in for the festivities and the two of them were no closer to stopping the monster stalking the town than they were when they first arrived.
At least now they knew what they were dealing with.  Keithâs name had been cleared and for that, Shiro was grateful, but in terms of the bigger mission, a monster from Anglo-Saxon folklore causing the killings only made things more complicated.  The beast had no more sentience than a wild animal, which meant he and Allura couldnât exactly go knocking on its door with an arrest warrant in hand.  And it was infinitely more dangerous than any animal.  Shiro had heard rumors circulating the town of people going missing over the last few days, pets disappearing from backyards.  If the festival came around and this grendel was still on the looseâŚ
âEven if we did find it,â said Shiro thinking out loud, âhow are we supposed to kill it? Â I didnât bring any firearms besides my handgun and I doubt that would cut it with a creature this big.â
Allura huffed, also frustrated, âIâve looked through every book I could find that mentions this thing and none of them list any weaknesses. Â Itâs immune to damage from all weapons. Â Only one personâs ever been said to defeat one. Â The hero, Beowulf.â
âWell, how did he do it?â
âHe ripped the creatureâs arm off with his bare hands.â
âOuch. Â Okay, not an option,â said Shiro, nervously putting a hand to his prosthetic, âWhat if we called in Coran? Â Do you think an exorcism could stop it?â
Allura shook her head, âItâs not a demon. Â I think that puts it outside of Coranâs jurisdiction.â
âWell, then whatâŚâ Shiro froze.
âWhatâs wrong?â
âI think weâre being followed.â
Across the street, Shiro was aware of another person keeping pace with him and Allura. Â Definitely a cause for concern this late at night with the street as empty as it was. Â Shiro turned and pretended to point something out to Allura in a nearby storefront window so they could get a good look at their follower.
Except that their follower did not appear in the windowâs reflection.
âWhat theâŚ?â
âItâs a vampire,â whispered Allura.
Slowly, Shiro turned to face the stranger. Â âItâs McClain.â he whispered back.
Recognizing that they had noticed him, Lance McClain waved at the two agents and crossed the street.
âEvening,â he said, âYou folks going on a bar crawl? Â Mind if I join?â
âYouâre Keithâs boyfriend, arenât you?â said Allura, trying to hide her uneasiness.
âYup, the nameâs Lance. Â Itâs Shiro and Allura, right?â
âListen,â said Shiro, âIs there something we can help you with? Â Weâre kind of trying to get home.â
âActually,â said Lance, âyeah, there is something.â
Suddenly Shiro felt someone grab him by the arms. Â He couldnât see who they were but they were big and very strong. Â He heard Allura give an indignant shout next to him.
âIâm really sorry about this,â said Lance, grabbing the collar of Shiroâs shirt and pulling down.
âWhat are youââ Â Shiro was cut off as Lance bit down at the skin between his shoulder and neck. Â He felt his needle-sharp teeth inject something into his bloodstream just before he blacked out.
He woke up in someoneâs living room, tied to a chair.
ââŚprepare a blood transfusion for them?â he heard a deep voice say as he came to.
âI think theyâll be okay. Â We donât need a lot of blood, just enough to make it look convincing. But maybe prepare a blood bag, just in case.â Â That was Lanceâs voice.
âHeyâŚâ Shiro croaked weakly.  He cleared his throat and tried again.  âHey!â
His vision began to clear up and Lanceâs face appeared in his line of sight, âOh, good, youâre awake. Â Whatâs your blood type?â
âWhereâs Allura?â
âSitting right behind you. Â I think sheâs starting to wake up too.â
Sure enough, Shiro heard Allura give a weak groan behind him. Â She must have been sitting facing away from him, because the first word out of her mouth was, âShiro?â
âIâm here,â said Shiro. Â Then to Lance, he said, âWhat the hell is going on here?â
âIâm trying to save lives,â said Lance, âThatâs whatâs going on.â
âSaving lives? Â Whose?â
âYours. Â And Alluraâs. Â And the lives of a lot of people I care about, including Keith.â
âWhat do you mean?â said Shiro, âIs Keith in danger?â
âHe will be if I donât do this. Â You two wouldnât happen to know a guy named Lotor, would you?â
âHeâs an incubus,â piped up Allura, âWe arrested him not that long ago.â
âAh, that explains why he wants you dead so badly. Â Apparently the arrest didnât stick.â
âLance, listen to me,â said Shiro, âWeâve dealt with people like Lotor before. Â Whatever kind of deal he made with you, he is going to double-cross you.â
âYeah, I figured. Â Thatâs why Iâm going to double-cross him first.â
âWhat?â
âUlaz can explain it better than me,â said Lance, gesturing to the nearby doorway. Â An extremely tall, white-haired werewolf stepped through it, holding what looked like an IV tube. Â âThis is Ulaz. Â Heâll be your doctor for today.â
âWeâre going to be taking a bit of blood from both of you,â said Ulaz, âJust enough for Lotor to be able to identify your scent when we fake your death.â
âWhen you what?â
âOh, thatâs the other thing,â said Lance, âOnce weâve collected the blood, weâll need you to take your clothes off.â
âExcuse me?!â said Shiro.
âSo that we have something to show Lotor to prove that youâre dead.â
âDonât worry, we brought spare clothes for you to change into,â said Ulaz, âAllura looks like she could fit into some of Kroliaâs old things and youâre about the same size as my mate.â
âI happen to like the outfit Iâm wearing now!â said Allura.
âGuys, Iâm sorry,â said Lance, his voice growing softer, âbut I have to do what I can to protect Keith. Â Itâs either this or kill you and I really donât want to kill you.â
Shiro sighed. Â As much as he didnât like the situation, he also couldnât blame Lance for being protective.
âAlright,â he said, âIâll help you. Â What about you, Allura?â
âCanât say Iâm a fan of your plan.  But if it means keeping your boyfriend safeâŚand, you know, not dyingâŚthen Iâm willing to help.â
Soon, both Shiro and Allura were untied and having their blood drawn by Ulaz, who explained that he worked as a nurse at the local hospital. Â Once all the blood they needed was collected, Shiro and Allura both stripped and changed into the clothes Lance and Ulaz gave them.
Shiro buttoned up his new shirt and tucked it into his pants. Â Apparently, he was a little bit shorter than Ulazâs mate, but other than that, they really were similar in size.
âThank you for this,â said Lance, as Shiro adjusted his clothes.
âItâs no problem,â said Shiro, âItâs our job to protect people like you. Â Iâm just glad Plan A wasnât to go ahead and kill us. Â Thanks for that, Carlos.â
âOh, I was never planning toââ Lance looked up, surprised, âHow did you know my name?â
âThe PBIâs been keeping tabs on you for a long, long time. Â Youâve lived a very full life, Carlos Montoya.â
Lance smiled and shook his head, âI never thought Iâd hear that name again. Â But if itâs all the same to you, Iâd like to be called Lance.â
Shiro nodded, âI understand. Â Iâve gotta admit, though, I was hoping youâd be partial to Isamu Kurogane.â
Lance chuckled, âGod, I almost forgot about my Japan days.â
âWhen this is all over, we should get lunch together sometime. Â You can tell me all about your life and weâll see if your Japanese has gotten rusty.â
âMy Japanese is just fine, thank you,â said Lance, smirking, âBut it might sound a little archaic to your ears.â Â His face fell a bit. Â âAssuming there is a âwhen this is all overâ.â
âThere will be,â said Shiro, putting a hand on Lanceâs shoulder, âNo matter what happens, I promise you, from here on out, weâre all on the same side.â
