Theory that Klaus was trained in hand-to hand combat like the rest of his siblings but chooses to fight Like That.
S1: Bar fight? Headbutt some asshole in the schnauz and jump on his back. Defending Luther in the club? Get behind his opponent and jump on his back. And I’m dying because this is how I fight with my siblings who can easily overpower me. It’s the barnacle defense. You can’t hit me/throw me if I’m stuck to your back like a barnacle. Which you know, works until they resolve to use their own body weight against you. ((And that’s when you bite them.)) Then there’s the gunfight in the bowling alley, and for the first time Klaus doesn’t do the barnacle, but he keeps his distance and throws a CAKE in self-defense.
S2: So, in this season, Klaus gets off pretty easy. He avoids another bar fight by escaping in some dude’s truck. He’s never confronted by the Swedes, like literally everyone else. He’s never confronted by Lila. (He does get sucker-punched by a child, but what are you going to do? Fight a kid?) The only physical altercation he has is with Ben, and omg, was that a BLAST to watch. Obviously, neither wants to REALLY hurt the other, but they’re both super frustrated, so they just. Roll around in the road slapping each other. Again, super relatable if that’s how you and your siblings do. Like, I just turned 30 and still get into this kind of shit with my brothers. (sisters not so much)
S3: Again, Klaus engages in almost no combat, unless it’s with his own immediate family, and I love that. In the first episode, he’s goes for a hug and gets sucker-punched by Sparrow Ben. You’d think Klaus would have some training re: how to take a punch, but he flops around like a Slinky. Then his giant monkey brother is thrown at him, and at that point, he’s just, 100% done. Tapping out. Even Viktor, with 0 hand-to-hand combat trainings, stands his ground. But Klaus is all “peace and love, peace and love,” and Marcus and Luther actually STOP to let him get through. The only physical altercation that Klaus engages in is with Luther in the Void. And this is CLASSIC sibling behavior. Obviously, he can’t fight Luther like he fought Ghost Ben in S2. Luther is too big and too strong. So Klaus defaults to taunting and evasive maneuvers. Then in the bounce house, when Luther has Klaus cornered, Klaus HISSES like a cat and makes claws with his hands. Like WTF? This is SO ineffective and SO socially inappropriate, UNLESS you’re play-fighting with someone you know. I LOVE IT.
Conclusion: Klaus fights with a “I’m very bad at this but I have to do something,” mentality. whether it’s a life or death situation, or he’s just messing around with his brothers. It reminds me so much of my own family. For reference, I’m a grown-ass adult with two younger brothers and four younger sisters, all of whom outgrew me at some point. Most of my sisters were about ending fights as quickly as possible via Indian burns, pinching, scratching, spitting, and flailing. One of my brothers has zero offensive instincts and is literally a punching bag. My last brother is the biggest and strongest of my siblings and will engage in combat for extended periods of time. Barnacle or turtle defense is my default, but one time (inspired by S1 Klaus) I went in for a headbutt and nailed my bro just below the ribs. Super fucking effective btw.
