Asmara-Massawa CablewayÂ
The cableway was built in Eritrea by the Italians in the 1930s. It was used to carry food, supplies and war materials for the Italian Army. It used a three-cable system and ran 75 kilometers long (approximately 46 miles). The cableway connected the port of Massawa to the highland city of Asmara. It had thirteen stations, five of which were used for transfers. The cableway was powered by eight diesel engines and used over 1,500 small transport wagons, which could carry THIRTY TONSÂ of material every hour. Unfortunately, it was dismantled by the British in 1941 after they defeated the Italian Army in Eritrea during World War II. Next time you are traveling by car or train between Massawa and Asmara, keep watch for large cement blocks with notches - these are the remnants of the Asmara-Massawa Cableway.Â
