The Equivocal Qur’an
The 7th verse of the 3rd Sura of the Qur’an offers one hell of an enigma, opening up a flood of comments. « It is He who has sent down the Book to you, there are unequivocal verses in it. (ءَايَتُ مُّحْكَمَتُ ), which are the mother of the Book, and other equivocal ones (مُتَشَبِهَتُ ). People who have an inclination to straying in their hearts, put the emphasis on the equivocal verses, seeking…

The Alchemy of Happiness, AL GHAZZALI The Alchemy of Happiness, AL GHAZZALI, GHAZZALI, Happiness, Salvation, THE KNOWLEDGE OF SELF, THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD, THE KNOWLEDGE OF THIS WORLD, THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE NEXT WORLD, CONCERNING MUSIC AND DANCING AS AIDS TO THE RELIGIOUS LIFE, , MARRIAGE AS A HELP OR HINDRANCE TO THE RELIGIOUS LIFE, THE LOVE OF GOD, The Vision of God, The Signs of the Love of God,
Whereas the prescribed fast is primarily a method of subduing temptations of the ego, blocking its path, and placing obstacles in its way, it deserves a special place in relation to God, since subduing the enemy of God is to help Him, and His help is not forthcoming unless people first help Him. Thus He said, “ if you help God, He will help you, and will strengthen you” (47:8). The servant of a God should take the initiative… God also saying “Verily God changes not what a people have until they change it for themselves (13:12)” imam al- ghazzali
On the Mysteries of Prescribed Fasting
Al-Ghazzali, both revered by Christian divines of the Middle Ages and regarded as a standard Sufi authority since the twelfth century, has codified, as it were, some of the characteristics of Sufi learning and teaching in a manner which has not been excelled.
In his Revival of Religious Sciences, an enormous tome not yet fully translated into English, he addresses the would-be student with the phrase:
‘He who knows, and knows that he knows, follow him’.
The next three dicta in this vein, often distorted into popular jingles, are in reality precise, technical aphorisms, and he quotes them from Al Khalil ibn Ahmad, (when he is referring to the teacher) whose duties are three:
‘He who knows, but does not know that he knows – he is asleep: wake him;
He who knows not, and knows that he knows not, he wishes to learn – teach him;
He who knows not, and is ignorant that he does not know – reject him.’
The Sufi’s competence does not extend to those whom the culture has still to affect to the limit of its own ability.

Unlike other doctrines,Ghazzali, in the Sawanih maintains that there is no distinguishing line between human and Divine love. That it is impossible to draw the line between the metaphysics of the spirit and the erotics of flesh. As per the author, Ghazzali implies love is a single reality composed of graduations of intensity and weakness. That it (love) differs in degrees but not in kinds as it originates from an Ultimate source (God).
What do ‘you’ think love is?
Are you ready to cut off your head and place your foot on it? If so, come; Love awaits you! Love is not grown in a garden, nor sold in the marketplace; whether you are a king or a servant, the price is your head, and nothing less. Yes, the cost of the elixir of love is your head! Do you hesitate? 0 miser, It is cheap at that price
Imam Abu Hamid Al-Ghazzali
… if you read or study knowledge, your knowledge must improve your heart and purge your ego – just as if you learned that your life would only last another week, inevitably you would not spend it in learning about law, ethics, jurisprudence, scholastic theology and suchlike, because you would know that these sciences would be inadequate for you. Instead, you would occupy yourself with inspecting your heart, discerning the features of your personality, giving worldly attachments a wide berth, purging yourself of ugly traits, and you would occupy yourself in adoring God the Exalted, worshipping Him, and acquiring good qualities. And not a day or night passes for [any] worshipper without his death during it being a possibility.
