Block timing. It's all about your timing. Too early, and the defender can pump fake and wait for you to sail by. Too late and you'll whiff, or collide and foul. The goal of the defender is to stop the ball from entering the basket. Usually, it's enough just to change the offensive player's shot enough so that they miss.
