Seven Remedies for Period Cramps That Actually Work
Period cramps affect many women during and sometimes even before their period. Some women have only mild cramps. However, other women like myself, are not as lucky. For some women, period cramps can be unbearable and affect their day-to-day life.
Here are 7 remedies for period cramps that actually work.
1. Heating Pad
Using a heating pad on your abdomen is one of the best and fastest ways to help get rid of period cramps.
Using a heating pad helps to relax the muscles of your uterus. Studies prove that a heating pad can actually be more effective than taking an OTC pain reliever.
A heating pad is my go-to when I have unbearable cramps!
2. Take a Hot Bath
This is very similar to using a heating pad. If I want to relax and get rid of cramps, I take a hot bubble bath. For me, taking a bath lasts longer rather than using a heating pad. This could however be different for you. Either way, heat is a great way to get rid of period cramps.
Adding essential oils to your bath can enhance the pain-relieving power.
3. Stay Hydrated: Drink Water!
Being bloated can cause discomfort and make your period cramps worse. It is very important to make sure you are drinking enough water. This can reduce bloating and alleviate some of the pain it causes.
Drinking hot water, or hot tea can help relax your muscles. This will ease cramps that are caused by uterine contractions.
4. Exercise
I know. Exercising is the last thing on your mind when you have period cramps. However, exercise does work. Try light exercises such as Yoga. If you push yourself too much, you could cause the pain to be worse.
5. Massage
Having someone give you a massage, or doing a self-massage over your abdomen will relax the pelvic muscles and reduce cramping. You may even want to use essential oils when massaging your abdomen.
6. Get Enough Sleep
Not getting enough sleep can throw your period off and cause it to be more painful than normal. Getting enough sleep and having a steady sleep schedule can actually reduce and even climate period cramps.
7. Eat More Dairy
Cheese is considered to be great for menstrual cramps. Not only is cheese rich in vitamin D, but cheese as well as other dairy products are loaded with calcium.
Sufficient intakes of calcium can help reduce and eliminate pain and discomfort that is caused by menstrual cramps.
Other great dairy products to help with period cramps include plain yogurt and cow milk.
Menstrual cramps can be very painful. Hopefully, these tips will help ease your discomfort and get you back to your everyday life.
