Two years after Act III and a certain one-time Abbot of Kiersau, now a mere Bother Gernot of Saint Aubet's, has been sent back to Tassing to collect a few books that survived the fire. Naturally there is nothing smooth or easy about this journey and old faces and new faces bring about many emotional turmoils and conundrums.
Mostly, Gernot did not expect to ever see one Andreas Maler of Nuremburg ever again.

Obligatory excerpt:
It is a wretched sort of kindness that Andreas is extending as they walk their slow way back up from the aqueducts. Gernot does not know himself in this moment. He has not spoken Tristram’s name out loud to another soul in decades and here is he saying the name to Andreas of all people.
They near the house. Gernot dreads going inside. He needs the quiet of sanctuary. The stillness of God’s house, but there is no parish church at the moment and he is loath to bother Father Elias in the rectory. It is why he had initially sought nature that day. Pray as Christ prayed, as the early monastics prayed: in the wilderness. If he were to go inside it would be loud and he cannot do loudness.
Which he half-says to Andreas: ‘I can’t go in, yet. I would like a moment or two for prayer.’
Andreas murmurs, ‘Of course, brother. Would you care for company?’
A beat. Their eyes rest in each other’s gaze. Gernot’s lungs twist.
‘No,’ Gernot breathes out. ‘Thank you, though. I – I need some time to myself with God.’
Andreas holds Gernot’s attention for a moment longer then bows his head, tells Grenot not to be too long about God’s business or all the dumplings will be eaten. Gernot, slicing a smile over his face, ‘I’m sure you’d rescue one or two for me.’
‘I might even rescue three or four,’ Andreas replies. ‘If I’m feeling generous.’
They’re going to be so normal about each other. Because these old men know how to be functional around one another!!

my monks are all MORONS!!!!
Okay one more ask: Do you ever think about how Giselher was only one step away from escaping his family's nonsense by marrying into Rudiger's family? Only they still all had to go to that dang feast.
And another thought on the younger Nibelungs, just from the Norse material, I imagine Gernot has the iron stomach of the family and is willing to eat almost anything. Even Hagen's cooking, if he ever cooks.
It's the main reason I ship Giselher/Dietlinde. Do we get a lot about them? No, even if what little we do get is pretty cute imo. But do I think there was happiness and warmth and hope in their meeting, and that Giselher was probably thinking about coming back to Dietlinde and enjoying something safe and peaceful and far away from all the tensions and angst in his family with her? Yes.
And then, ofc, he dies a brutal death. And so does poor, honorable Rüdiger, his father-in-law. And thinking about Dietlinde and Gotelinde hearing the news after always kills me.
... and I wasn't expecting that Gernot headcanon after thinking about all that, but I love it. XD Just like I love the idea of Hagen being a terrible cook. XDD
Tbf, that last one is partly because, in Modern AU scenarios, I can't help but see Hagen as someone who would probably try to subsist mainly on black coffee and cigarettes if not for a vague, disgruntled awareness that he has to eat at least sort-of healthy to keep himself in shape. Tho that still doesn't stop him from being kind of hopeless in the kitchen. XD
(Btw, kind of off-topic but thinking about Hagen and cooking also made me think back to this delightful little fic, so have a random rec!)
