Assumption of the Virgin
Title: Assumption of the Virgin
Artists: Egid Quirin Asam and Cosmas Damian Asam
Year: 1722
Movement: Germanic Rococo
Medium: Marble, Stucco, and Gilding
Genre: Statue scene
Same as yesterday’s example, this is a religious statue. The scene shown is pretty self explanatory to anyone who grew up with euro-centric Christianity as a cultural dominant religion. Above with the use of gold and natural sunlight, there are angels, clouds, and other symbols of the glory of God. Below are dark colors and a pagan like ritual, meant to represent what Christians often believe hell to look like.
In the center, we see Mary being raised to heaven by angels. There is also the holy spirit in the form of a dove in front of the entrance to heaven.
In the Rococo era , Germany and Austria were at the end of the 7 year war, and they were enjoying a sort of post war economic boom. Due to this, architecture and interior design were much more elaborate. Many of the gorgeous buildings we see in Germany and Austria today, come from this period in the countries’ history.
Schloss Sanssouci
