“The remote estate on abundant property.” The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, is one of the most ornate manors of the Victorian era. A neo-Gothic chateau inspired by medieval and Renaissance manors in Europe, the estate has been a significant piece of Western history. George Vanderbilt built it in 1895 on an ideal location of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains to pursue his passions of arts, literature, and cultures. He had two renowned Victorian designers for this undertaking achievement: Richard Morris Hunt was George’s architect, and Frederick Law Olmsted designed the gardens. In fact, during its construction, George’s tastes for such cultures and arts influenced his travels with them , collecting an immense and diverse number of pieces of furniture across the Old World. The furniture they collected would become part of the estate. Cornea Vanderbilt, George’s only child, was born in the Biltmore Estate in 1900. Today, the castle is now listed as a National Historic Landmark. With 250 rooms and eight thousand acres of property, this house is the largest privately owned residence in the United States, and one of the largest in the Western world. Some the rooms that we had enjoyed are the banquet hall, the library, the bowling alley, and swimming pools. The library was where George Vanderbilt would enjoy his pastime reading books constantly. The banquet hall would have a fun and talkative atmosphere of two hours of suppers, where residents and their guests would meet and chat while enjoying their meals. After the visit to Biltmore Estate, we headed to the Red Stag grill and had some delicious steaks.
