George Clanton - 100% Electronica⁠ ⁠ @georgeclanton #georgeclanton #mirrorkisses #vaporwave⁠ ⁠ I post this album a lot because it rules and I also post it a lot because its one of the few albums that prompts me to buy new colorways every time a new and cool one comes out. This yellow/orange/reddish purple blend came out a while back and I was just wine buzzed enough to pull the trigger on it before it sold out. Perfect timing, too, because it is one of those objectively perfect summer albums packed front-to-back with chill kickback bangers and summer is sadly coming to close up here in Seattle. It's been a dumb summer anyway with masks and social distancing and all the cool spots closed down off and on, but we've made the best of it in our own little bubble and music and good food/drink are always on that menu. Vaporwave got a bad rep for a minute because of two reasons: 1) it's impenetrable to people who can neither appreciate a healthy sense of nostalgia (with a touch of irony) and/or people who cannot in any way take a joke when it comes to art and 2) a lot of it was really really not very good. You had the super pure early foundational stuff like Macintosh Plus and then the later waves injected some pop sensibilities to make it a little more palatable to people who weren't just curating a very specific niche of visual Tumblr. George is a master of the vaporwave aesthetic but he's also an incredible songwriter and for those who fit into either camp 1 or camp 2 above, one of the first to use the aesthetic in a way to do more than make a statement. This will sound like a big stretch, and maybe it is, but I feel this is like the Songs From the Big Chair of vaporwave. A beautiful, staggering work of ambition and talent with little regard for who might pick it up and who might throw it in the dollar bin. George, in all of his projects, makes art, and great art at that. I know we'll have disagreements on this one and as long as you aren't a jerk about it, I'm happy to hear it. George Clanton / Nick Hexum - Crash Pad ⁠ ⁠ @georgeclanton @nickhexum #georgeclanton #nickhexum #311 #vaporwave #90s⁠ ⁠ I have already gone on record as saying that I think that George Clanton is one of the most satisfying artists to come out of the vaporwave movement, and certainly one of the only ones that knew that the aesthetic alone would never take the place of amazing songwriting that people could relate to (it's why 100% Electronica is WALL TO WALL packed with earworms). Turns out, like many of us he's held a soft spot in his heart for all kinds of musicians from the 90s that, due to the snobbiest parts of the music scene, we've been made to believe should live only in the past where we remember them. Unlike those of us afraid to admit that WE LOVED 311 back in the day, he embraced it and made it part of his own image, wearing the classic alien head logo on clothes and talking about his love for the band boldly and proudly. The story goes that they had a chance to meet once and he threw out the idea of doing a collab and lo and behold, here we are...George, a contemporary artist who hasn't even reached his prime in terms of output getting to work with one of his musical idols on something that bridges music and styles from different decades and you know what? George Clanton - Slide @georgeclanton #georgeclanton #chillwave #vaporwave Good morning, VE! After a few days of break to recover from the flu (yes, I got the flu shot!) I’m back in the saddle and ready to write about albums again. Fortunately for both of us, this “vaporwave opera” was at the top of my giant backlog of new releases and band submissions eagerly awaiting reviews. First and foremost, if you’re unfamiliar with George’s work, you won’t be faulted but you should absolutely take a trip through his mighty catalog with many different names (Mirror Kisses, ESPRIT 空想, etc.). I first got hooked on his music with his album 100% Electronica (a little confusing because that’s also the name of his label…), and I have played that album into the ground over the past few years. He assured us in a recent Reddit AMA that he’ll be pressing more, but I am JONESIN for a copy of that album on vinyl so if you want to make me very happy, go ahead and slide into my DMs if you wanna send one my way ;) . I won’t get into the pedigree and history of “vaporwave” because frankly doing so would only further contribute to the corporate definition of something designed entirely to give a middle finger to capitalist excess. I will say, however, that of all the artists making this aesthetically wayward child of chillwave are wrapped in enigma. Well, all except for George. George is an exceptionally talented musician and songwriter who has been taking the vaporwave and chillwave aesthetic and using it as a rich palette of colors to produce with rather than an impossibly challenging and jarring artistic statement. His knack for writing pop hooks is found on literally every song he’s committed to tape and that’s a big departure from some of the more obtuse and conceptual albums in the genre. It’s really hard to explain WHY this album is so good to someone unfamiliar with the style, so I’ll stop here and implore you to listen to it instead. It’s so, so, so good.
