Mitch, Will and I (Dayne) represented GINA at the 4th annual GeoFest activity this last weekend. GeoFest an event put on as part the Geography Awareness Week; an event sponsored by the Alaska Geographic Alliance and the UA Geography Program. Mitch and Will joined me representing
This year we had two booth activities:
The first activity was the WhatWhere online map quiz. WhatWhere is a quiz that asks participates to try and identify what they are looking at or where the location is they looking at from GINA datasets throughout Alaska. This web map version created by Will expands on the idea from last years printed out version from last year by taking it online and using the GINA web services feeds for our datasets.
The second ad-hoc activity was inspired because Will brought his LeapMotion controller. The LeapMotion controller tracks hands and fingers allowing you to control applications with hand motions and gestures. The Google Earth integration is great and allowed kids and parents to fly around in Google Earth looking for interesting things such as the Great Pyramids or the UAF Campus. We ended up with a line of people and a few repeat visitors. We'll be bringing a few of these to our booth at the Alaska Surveying and Mapping Conference in March so more people can try out this fun interface to Google Earth and GINA data. Seen below is Lakeye Scott who was visiting GeoFest from being stationed for his first winter in Fairbanks Alaska at the Eielson Airforce Base.
