At our school we have all the boys in the class stand up whenever a teacher or a girl from another class enters our classroom. This is done to teach them gentlemanliness. The girls in the class naturally remain seated.
The boys have to remain standing until their teacher tells them to be seated.
Yesterday a girl from one of the lower grades came to our room. All of the boys stood except for Johnson. When I confronted him he said that the girl was two years younger than him, so he shouldn't have to stand.
How insolent! I sent him to the headmistress to ask for six of the very best.
I was surprised to learn that the headmistress gave him a full dozen. So today, he is eager to stand, and looks like he would rather not sit back down again.
Funny, isn’t it?
Dearest reader, there are some moments where one may receive an onslaught of emotion. This eve was one of those horrid nights for this writer. She has been tempted to download a dating application; the loneliness to which at times she prizes herself with is becoming difficult. That is of course dear reader until tomorrow’s eve where she shall once more laugh at her weakness. Have you sensed the trend, dear reader? After watching many a friend and acquaintance find a companion, even long single family members become attached she can do nothing but fear once more that she shall never find the love that everyone claims she deserves. And once more we may debate the quandary of an introverted single woman finding this mysterious beast known as man or love or what have you. Truly it is not as magical as one reads in novels, truly there is no romantic sweet courtship in days such as these. Everything is much more thrown out into the open, a date ends with a kiss to the mouth rather than one to the palm. Letters have been replaced with quick and witless text messages which have completely destroyed the art of writing. There are no poetic proses nor galant gentlemen. What was once perceived as romantic has now become sexist or cliche. This author herself has balked on occasion the simplist gentlemanly act by an acquaintance’s significant other. And is that fair, dear reader? To expect a man to be galant and yet consider these acts to be rather old fashioned in the times? This author does not believe it is. This world has truly become too sensitive to simple politeness, viewing as sexism. It makes things much harder for a man to show a woman anything more than conversations worth of simpletons and politeness that frustrates this author’s very mind. Of course, dear reader, as we do know, this writer has little knowledge of the actualities of such gentlemanly acts as she has had but one date, as it were, in thirteen years. So she supposed she is speaking in response to observation and continual comparison to the modern world and that of the past. And now that this column has rather found itself on a tangent of opinion, as if you were surprised dear reader, I shall bid you ado until next time.
Gentlemanliness presupposes manliness.
The respect given a gentleman is thus premised on constraint.
A gentleman has the ability — the power, cleverness, confidence, and even the desire — to ride roughshod over your interests, muscle you aside, and manipulate you…but, he has instead voluntarily chosen to restrain himself to follow a more moral course. He’s a coiled spring, and his self-control showcases one of the timeless markers of manhood: will.
Gents of the “m’lady” persuasion, however, get the equation backwards. They try to be a gentleman before becoming a man. Without the structure of the hard, tactical virtues of manliness behind them, the gentle virtues shapelessly droop and sag, and fail to engender the same kind of respect.
You’ve Got to Be a Man, Before You Can Be a Gentleman [ Art of Manliness ]
The power which the strong have over the weak, the employer over the employed, the educated over the unlettered, the experienced over the confiding, even the clever over the silly - the forbearing or inoffensive use of all this power or authority, or a total abstinence from it when the case admits it, will show the gentleman in a plain light.
Robert E. Lee

And all the Panama hats in the world cannot a gentleman make.

Edmund Burke was surely thinking along similar lines when he stated that the king may make a nobleman, ‘but he cannot make a gentleman'. And, when a notice was put up in a St James's club that stated ‘Would the nobleman who has stolen my umbrella please return it', the author pointed out, by way of an explanation, that it was a club for gentlemen and noblemen and that ‘a gentleman would never have stolen my umbrella'.
