Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said Germany had caused "immeasurable suffering" to the Herero and Nama people, in what is now Namibia, in the early part of the 20th century.

Germany on Friday formally recognized as genocide the crimes committed by its colonial troops at the beginning of the 20th century against the Herero and Nama people in what is now Namibia.

It's the first time that Berlin has recognized the attrocities committed, with the declaration coming after five years of negotiations.

Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD) said in a statement that as a "gesture of recognition of the immeasurable suffering" Germany caused, it would set up a fund amounting to €1.1 billion (US $ 1.34 billion).

Affected communities would play a key role in deciding what the funds were used for, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement, while legal claims for compensation would not be deducted from it.

There are far more “groups” (for lack of a better word) of people who officially recognize the Armenian Genocide than are on the official list of Nations that recognize the genocide -- and this is because naturally the list is only limited to internationally recognized states.

One nation that is not internationally recognized, but that officially recognizes the Armenian Genocide, and is extremely significant is Kurdistan.

The Kurdistan Parliament in Exile first made an official statement recognizing the Armenian and Assyrian genocides in 1996, and again in 1997. The statement made by Zubeyir Aydar, Chairman of the Executive Committee, was direct, and complete (though he omits the Greek genocide in his statement). In his official statement, he recognizes that certain Kurdish groups participated in committing these genocides. Quote: “I find the Ottoman State and their collaborators the Hamidiye Alaylari, formed by some Kurdish tribes, responsible for this crime before history and I condemn them with abhorrence.” (source) (source)

Of course, this should not be taken out of the context of various Kurdish groups’ mistreatment of Assyrians in shared territory.
