(Special Despatch to The Globe.)
Peterboro', March 14 - Erected eight months ago at an estimated cost of $7,000, the coal conveyor at the Simcoe street gas plant of the Hydro-electric Power Commission here is being dismantled today. Asked the reason, W. G. Ferguson, local Manager for the commission, replied: "It doesn't concern the people.”
The conveyor was erected to carry coal from the railway siding to the plant, but, for some reason known only to the Hydro officials, it has not been used to the extent anticipated.
Shortly after its installation it became the subject of a controversy in the City Council last summer, when it was alleged that Peterboro's gas rate was one of the highest in the Province, and it was intimated that the practise of installing such equipment and not using it was a contributory factor in the high rate. Hydro officials replied to this by stating that Peterboro's gas rate was not exceptionally high.
