In a previous post I touched on some misguided criticisms people blindly make about GT, now of course I do actually like GT. I love the adventure aspect being put back into it, I love seeing Goku running around Galaxies as a kid with Trunks, Pan & Giru, I love some characters designs (have a lot of them tho) but with all that said the series did get some things wrong…
Villains just weren’t as cool
When you think of Dragon Ball baddies you think of the Red Ribbon Army, Piccolo & Tao Pai Pai, when you think of DBZ villains you think of Vegeta, Frieza, Ginyu Force, Cell, Buu but when you think of GT villains you think of ummm Omega Shenron and uhhhhh Baby Vegeta? Point is GT villains just didn’t live up to the epicness of most of the previous villains. With Frieza you never knew what was gonna happen next, with Cell you couldn’t stand his arrogant smug dickness but most of GT’s Villains just weren’t as interesting both visually and conceptually. The best villain to me was General Rilldo and even he’s kinda obscure. Plus after going through so many convenient plot devices in the latter half of DBZ we as fans could predict when energy waves would fail to kill baddies or when Spirit Bombs would be used etc. etc.
Speaking of which, it’s no secret that by the time we reach the Android saga the series was no longer about proper techniques but was about Super Power Up plot devices and Earth shaking beams. Any actually intricate martial arts aren’t displayed but implied to be happening so fast we can’t see em (lazy) but GT had the misfortune of having to follow some of DBZ later on craziness. There was literally nowhere for it to go but forward in a sense. Now it does make an attempt to pump some of DB’s roots back into the series by properly balancing base level fighting and Super level fighting but when you know Goku can go beyond his base form those fights kinda became pointless and predictable. This isn’t necessarily GT’s fault though, Toriyama practically painted the franchise in a corner with that shit. So the result was even bigger powers, even bigger beams, even bigger transformations actual fighting styles be damned.
There are some inconsistencies and plot holes in the story, ESPECIALLY in the English dub. Now every anime has it’s inconsistencies and plot holes but with GT some just kinda make you go “Ehhh, that’s not how it happened” Shit like Goku not being able to properly use SSJ3 because of the kid body kinda negates Gotenks (unless the fusion of two kids allows for this to be overcome), or Bra saying that “Goku and Vegeta have been friends forever” nah, or Goten saying him and Trunks turned SSJ3 before fusing, or saying Pan can’t go Super Saiyan cuz her saiyan blood is too diluted  but her grandson can, or how about that whole Black Star Dragon Balls thing? I dunno I can over look dub mistakes but some shit in GT just totally negates shit from the last series like nobody took the time to double check or something.
