Cinderella, Ribosomes, and Antibiotics
Once upon a time there was a lonely little girl named 30s Subunit. Â She had two evil stepsisters, Aminoglycosides and Tetracycline, and an evil stepmother, Macrolides. Â
All 30s wanted to do was be with her true love, 50s, so they could make proteins together. Â Her stepsisters and stepmother did not approve of this!
The two stepsisters grabbed Cinderella. Â Tetracycline blocked her A-site while Aminoglycosides prevented her from joining to 50s. Â Macrolides grabbed 50s and prevented him from reaching 30s.
“Ta, ma!” cried the two stepsisters.  “Now the ribosomes will never be complete, and the bacteria won’t take over the Kingdom!”.
Then the prince’s guards, the Efflux Pumps, came along and pushed the sisters and the stepmother away, chanting “Antibiotic Resistance!”. Â
Fluoroquinoline tried to prevent the honeymoon by grabbing DNA gyrase so the DNA in the kingdom couldn’t be packed up, thereby preventing cell division. When that didn’t work, Sulphonamides tried to prevent the conception of an heir by getting rid of all the folic acid.  Penicillin G and Glycopeptide tried to attack the castle by attacking the D-ala-D-ala portion of the (draw)bridge; Glycopeptide tried to bind to it and hold it down while penicillin G made a fake bridge by disguising itself as D-ala D-ala so that everyone would fall into the moat. Sadly, this did not work because the bacteria had received a resistance plasmid by conjugation.

Story Prompt: In Love With a Man Circa 40,000 years BC
A genetics researcher, who struggles to deal with people and has spent many years feeling lonely and unable to connect with anyone.
She works on the remains of a Denisovan or Neanderthal or Floresiensis (extinct forms of human) and begins to place all her wishes and dreams on him. Â She imagines that he is her perfect man, the only person she has ever felt comfortable and connected with. Â She falls in love with who she believes he is.
Denisovans and others were able to breed with modern humans. Â She knows this and she has his DNA.
