Texts of Eno: A General History of the Planet Eno: For the Common Man
To give a quick introduction to this text, it was written by Genano, a historian of the Baraneto Unity in the Year 579. By this time, the Great War had already been going on for almost 400 years. He studied the histories of every nation, the religious stories, and the documents that the people of his own country kept (since they have always been peaceful, they have maintained unblemished accounts of history), and he formulated this view of the history of the world. In the world of Eno, Genano's chronicle of the world's history is considered the most honest account.
A General History of the Planet Eno: For the Common Man
The exact origins of this planet are unknown, but it is known that there was a time when all the lands were one. The lands were one, and they were bare. On land, there was desert, and there was forest. In the center of Endera, a great heat prevented anything from living. On the outskirts of the land, great jungles devoured the soil. The sea was tempestuous, and swirled angrily with whirlpools and waves. Tsunamis ravaged the coastlines, and the sea swallowed the land. From this time of great destruction came life. The creatures of the sea were thrown from their home and into the valleys of the land. Time passed.
After some time, the creatures of the sea had adapted to live upon the land. Time passed.
The creatures became beings, and they could think for themselves. Time passed.
The temperature dropped, and the beings inhabited the whole of Endera. Time passed.
Earthquakes shook the land. The beings were fearful and banded together into one group in the center of the continent. The earthquakes stopped for a time, and the unison of the beings was praised. The unison allowed them to develop a language. This was the time of the Great Peace. Before long, the earthquakes and tsunamis began again. A torrential rain drowned the land, and the beings again grew fearful. They sought refuge in the center of Endera once again, but they could not be saved. Many died, and the land began to separate. Time passed.
The lands had separated, and the people, and the languages had changed. With time, most of the beings forgot about the time before, but some remembered. This was the time of Change. Time passed.
In the West, the frigid northern climate prevented contact between the Northern tribes and the Southern tribes of the tropics in modern day Erajon; the people of the two main landmasses (modern Erajon and the Kingdom of Antiona) had not yet discovered each other, and there was no fighting. In the East, tribes fought in constant conflict, seeking new land and new power, and there was great death; the Eastern Island was spared this violence for it was isolated by the sea. In the center, the islands were at peace, and they knew each other well, and they formed the Confederation. In the West, this was the time of Ignorance; in the East, the time of Strife; in the center, the time of Coexistence. Time passed.
The Eastern Peninsula (the modern Vanadian Peninsular State) had escaped the turmoil of war, for it was surrounded on three sides by water, and blocked off by high mountains on the fourth. It was this nation that would end the fighting in the East. They came by boat, having developed a great affinity for the sea, and dispersed to the different tribes of the East; their ambassadors were welcomed by the Lower tribes, but the Upper tribes attacked them. The Lower tribes were pacified by these sea-faring people, and the Upper tribes were left to themselves, though the Lower tribes and the sea-people would not forget the violence of the Upper tribes. The Upper tribes were ruled by an Emperor, and the Lower tribes became three nations: The Arden, the Svangali Republic, and the Nokitowa Empire. The sea-faring people became the Vanadian Peninsular State, and they were the guardians of the East, though they had the least amount of land. The nations of the Lower tribes were separate, but they were also one; they traded with each other, and were prosperous. This was the time of Waiting, and this was Year 1. They lived in waiting for centuries.
The tribes of the Western landmass discovered each other around the same time as the sea-faring people pacified the East. The Northern and Southern languages were vastly different, but violence was not in their nature, and they became one, the nation of Erajon, and they had great power. The other great landmass of the West had been unified before Year 1 by a group of beings of great military strength, the Kingdom of Antiona. These two landmasses discovered each other in Year 35. It was the Northern tribes that developed the ability to travel the sea, and they were explorers. They reached the Kingdom of Antiona, and were forced to turn back by the violence of these strange new people. This was the start of the Western War, and the end of the time of Ignorance.
The island nations of the center continued to live in harmony until Year 80. It was then that the lower islands discovered the Eastern Island. The lower islands sought to include this new ally into the confederation, but the upper islands opposed. This new island was larger and had had a temperate climate, which made it prosperous. This was the time of Dispute. The upper islands seceded from the Confederation in Year 85, and began trading with the Kingdom of Antiona to their North. These islands—the Palpine Islands, Tuxatec, Lakata, and Pashava—banded together and formed the United Islands. The lower islands incorporated the Eastern Island into the Confederation. And so began the Island Wars in the Year 85, and the end of the time of Coexistence.
There was a peaceful nation in the center that avoided the fighting, the Baraneto Unity. They possessed a great intelligence, and an affinity for invention. They never forgot the time of Unity of the distant past. It was these people that discovered the Magic. Time passed.
In the Year 168, the world was still stricken with war. The nations of the world had made great strides in their knowledge, and the Magic spread to the Upper tribes of the East. The empire of the old upper tribes had fallen into chaos, and the Nomataru Commonwealth was born. Without allies on their continent, they spread through the sea; they were turned away by the United Islands, who saw their arrival as an attempt at colonization; they were turned away from their instructors on the peaceful Unity of Baraneto, for they did not want to be involved in politics; they were turned away by the Kingdom of Antiona, for the kings did not want to burden their kingdom. They found allies in the Eastern Island and the Confederation, and in the Western landmass of Erajon. This was the time of Suspiscion.
In the Year 180, the nations of the Lower tribes and the sea-faring people of the Vanadian Peninsular State came together, and began to cross the mountains into the area of the Upper tribes. The Upper tribes reached out to their allies, and the Eastern Island attacked the Vanadians. The Confederation saw this as a time to conquer their neighbors, the United Islands; they attacked the United Islands, and the United Islands looked to the Antionans for support. The Erajons sailed from both sides: they sailed to support the Upper tribes of the Nomataru Commonwealth, and they sailed the short distance to the Kingdom of Antiona to support the Confederation. This was the start of the Great War.
The allies of the Upper tribes became the Union, and the allies of the Lower tribes became the Alliance. This began the time of Now.
Texts of Eno: Introduction
Every so often I am planning on posting snippets of texts (sometimes in English, sometimes in my conlangs with translations) from my conworld of Eno. Most of the texts come from the Baraneto Unity, but I'm slowly writing texts from other nations as well. The first text is going to be a brief history of the planet. It was written by a Genano, a famous historian of the Baraneto Unity in an attempt to equate the commoner with the history of Eno. The people of the Unity are extremely educated and are peaceful in all ways; they retain the knowledge of the time before. The second text is going to be an essay overview of the general military tactics of the different nations written by Aleanna, a female academic again from the Baraneto Unity; this includes basic weapon descriptions, naval strategy, and the way Magic works on Eno. There will be more texts to come, including creation stories, chronicles, contracts, and other documents.
