Do your birds notice that you're grieving?
It’s hard to say. I think Spencer is pretty good at knowing when I’m upset, but he’s also just generally a pretty snuggly guy, so it’s hard to say if he’s being snuggly because he knows I need to be comforted or if he’s just being snuggly because he likes snuggling. (Either way, I’m not complaining :D ) Beatrix is also being very cuddly, but she’s also molting heavily and as a result wants to be scritched ALL. THE. TIME, so it’s also hard to say if her cuddling is because she can sense I’m upset or if she’s just itchy, lol. (Again, either way, I’m not complaining.)
The budgies, I think, are still pretty disoriented and trying to figure things out amongst themselves. When I let them out Oliver is still very flirty with Beatrix and Violet is still stealing my food but while they’re in their cage they’re much, much quieter than they ever were with Horatio around. I think they know that something is missing, and maybe even that it’s Horatio is missing, but I don’t really think they know what to do about it. The saddest thing was watching Oliver look for him on the night he died. :( Oliver kept flock-calling and when he didn’t get a response, he flew over to Beatrix’ cage (where the budgies all like to hang out in the evenings, I guess because it’s exactly like their cage but with different toys?) and stood in the doorway just eyeing the place where Horatio always used to perch in the evening, absolutely silent. He sat there for about fifteen minutes, just looking, and then flew back to the other budgies. Poor Oliver. :(
