Bouyout Beirut started in 2016 because I wanted to have postcards that portrayed the Beirut I loved and lived every day. The different houses from Gemayzeh and Mar Mikhael had it all. After the explosions of August 4th on Beirut Port, where most of the city got devastated, these houses were destroyed. In so many cases, the ones still “standing” will probably need to be demolished due to structural damage. I’ve been captivated with the city, its people and especially its architecture- we tend to think that “it is the thing that will remain even after we are gone”- and now we have to see them crumbling. We decided to go back to register what they had to endure. We left on each building its postcard as a gesture of hope, common good. Hoping that the owners and the municipality choose to rebuild and preserve them, our Lebanese heritage. Hoping that we, the people, can think of better days.
