Master of Disguise (Rogue Archetype)
The art of disguise is a dangerous and powerful one indeed, allowing one to masquerade as someone else entirely, all without the telltale signature of magic. Of course, it all depends on the skill of the one in disguise, for makeup and concealing clothing can only go so far without being properly applied.
Today’s subject is neither famous nor infamous for their skill of disguise, which shows you just how good they really are. As far as they are concerned, only their most trusted confidants will ever know who they really are, and even that is optional.
A good master of disguise has so many faces that even their real face is a deception in its own right, since no one would even know who they were if they were to go out without a disguise on.
In any case, these are masters of stealth in their own way, performing their clandestine acts with a million and one faces to pick from.
Truly these rogues are masters of the art, making better disguises and playing the role exceptionally well. Furthermore, they can assemble their disguises with practiced speed, outpacing all but magically assisted disguises.
This only improves with time, allowing them to perfect their disguises with inspiration that other rogues can only duplicate every now and again.
Additionally, there are several useful rogue talents that these masters also make use of, including mastering other forms of hiding themselves, some spellcasting power to help mimic mages, and taking charge of a social situation to maintain their cover, as well as those that ward their mind against intrusion.
Admittedly, this archetype basically amounts to getting better versions of certain rogue talents, but that’s fine, it keeps things simple so you can consider adding a second archetype, or just want to play a rogue, but be extra good at disguising oneself. Obviously, a social rogue is the best bet here, but feel free to experiment with your build here.
Of course, having so many alternate identities can put a strain on one’s sense of self as they lose track of who they really are. Ask any law enforcement psychiatrist and they’ll tell you about the difficulties of undercover cops on long assignments. Now imagine that compounded for characters who don’t have anyone to talk to.
With her distinct stocky dwarven build, one might imagine that disguising oneself would be difficult for Marag Steelbuckle, but such is not the case, for she has portrayed many a swarthy workman and woman of other races, often using platform heels and a razor to achieve the desired effect. All towards her goal of bringing down the slave trade.
Not content to pass the torch to the next set of venerable mothers, a trio of gegenees matriarchs chose undeath, becoming mummified, so as to rule their clan for all eternity. Getting close to the xenophobic tribe will be difficult, for the massive, six-armed forms of the giants is nearly impossible to replicate with a mundane disguise, but for the true master of disguise, that is part of the challenge.
For the last week, the party has been given the run-around, trying to get into contact with the leader of the thieves guild, being pointed in various directions that led to some altercation of some sort. In the end, the leader reveals that he had been their contacts all along. He was testing their mettle and resolve for the tasks ahead.
