"There She Blows!" lyrics analysis.
So this has been in my mind ever since I listened to the song for the first time, but I had a lovely conversation with @bells25 and so that made me want to post this analysis properly.
"There She Blows!" is a song that was published in the final NGHFB album, Council Skies, as the eight song of the album. It was published in 2023, with the rest of the album. Let's start with the analysis.
I'm going to tell you this beforehand, since it's going to make the analysis easier to understand. The song establishes four characters in total: An "I" (The singer, Noel, the one who tells the story), a "you" (The person that the song is talking to, Sara), The Commander (Who's meant to represent Liam) and The Ship. Yes, the ship is a character in this story and it represents either Oasis or the relationship between Noel and Liam, although considering how much the band and their bond are connected, this can be seen as interchangeable. We're going to find out exactly how these characters appear as the analysis keeps going, don't worry.
"The liberty ship disappeared
A long long time ago
Searching the seven seas for love"
The song starts by establishing the first character in this story, a ship, specifically a liberty ship. This was a cargo ship built by the USA during WW2, a war that we know Noel is a big fan of, so the reference isn't out of place. Although this can also be read as the ship being called Liberty. Noel already has established motifs and ideas to represent his relationship with Liam in his songwriting, that being the sea and freedom, among others, so this song is another example of that.
The song also tells us this character is a doomed/tragic one, one that disappeared a long time ago on a mission: To search for love around the world. This is a detail you'll have to remember because I'll mention it again the end of the song.
"The finest commander
That the world had ever known
He died of a broken heart
'Cause I told him that I loved you more
I told him that I loved you more
I loved you more than love"
Here the second, third and fourth characters appear. The Commander, who's characterised has the best one in the world, but died of a broken heart; The Narrator, who uses the pronoun "I" and who the singer represents, The Commander was in love with him but he loved someone else; and The Listener, who is represented by the "you" pronoun, who The Narrator loved more than The Commander.
The Commander represents Liam, obviously. They're both characterised by being the finest in their respective jobs, as leaders, comparing Liam's job as the frontman and main singer with that of a commander of a ship. Liam being The Commander also makes me think that The Ship represents something as well, in this case, the bond between him and Noel, the singer. Him dying because of a broken heart, while searching for love, simply emphasises The Ship being a doomed character, as mentioned in the beginning.
The Narrator represents Noel, which makes sense since he's the one singing and writing the song. It's a story told from his point of view. In real life, as we may know, it's believed that the reason why Noel ended his relationship with Liam after leaving Oasis was to be with Sara, his second (ex)wife. There were more complicated reasons in play but for simplicity, we'll stick to this. The Commander (Liam) was in love with him, just like in real life, but he told him that he loved The Listener more.
The Listener represents Sara, which makes sense considering Noel is The Narrator and Liam The Commander. Again, in real life, this was how it played out. Noel says in the song that he loved her more than love, which was already established as the mission The Ship had, one that they failed because of this.
"There she blows
Steady baby as she goes
Where we're going, no one knows
Don't get left behind"
Now, I'm going to say this: The "she" here actually refers to The Ship. That's right. Remember that ships used to be referred with female pronouns; she's the one who blows, as in, sails away, steady. It can't refer to either The Narrator or The Listener because of grammatical rules, and it can't be The Commander either because he uses male pronouns. So this leaves us with The Ship as the only answer.
The Ship, despite failing her mission, is moving forward, with The Narrator and other people (Perhaps The Commander) on board. And he's telling The Listener to not get left behind.
Let's remember The Ship represents the bond between Noel and Liam. Noel is telling us that despite their breakup, he and Liam are advancing and don't know exactly where they'll end, but what matters is that they're in contact again. And he's telling Sara to not get left behind, he's moving forward with his brother and warns Sara about it.
"There she waits (She waits)
To meet you at the pearly gates
Hurry up and don't be late
Don't get left behind"
The Ship is waiting at the pearly gates. Let's remember that she's a doomed character, Noel acknowledges that The Ship already failed and so she's waiting at the pearly gates, at Heaven. Now, to me, this is a way of saying that The Ship is at the end of the road, she's the ending of the story. Noel and Liam were on board already, which means they're at the pearly gates too, Noel is willing to die with this relationship and he's telling Sara she'll see it at the end.
He again tells her to hurry up, to not be late and not get left behind. Noel is also willing to leave Sara behind for this relationship, he wants her to accompany him but also he won't wait for her if she doesn't make her choice.
We know that in the end Sara divorces him and Noel comes back to Liam.
"The finest commander
That the world had ever known
He died of a broken heart
Cause I told him that I loved you more
I told him that I loved you more
I love you more than love"
Here there's a change in verb conjugation. Before, Noel talked in past tense, but now he says he currently loves The Listener more than love. To me this means the last phrase is not him citing what he told The Commander, rather, he's telling directly to The Listener this.
(Later the chorus gets repeated with no changes, so I won't write it. I'll go to the next part of the lyrics.)
"Searching the seven seas for love
He died of a broken heart
'Cause he knows I love you more"
The Commander and The Ship had the same mission, as it was established before, and he failed. This time The Commander is the one who knows already that The Narrator loves The Listener more. I think this can also be used to confirm that he's the one currently on board of the ship with The Narrator, Noel and Liam are in contact again despite Liam knowing he prefers Sara over him.
"Told him that I loved you more (x3)
Loved you more than love"
Now, remember that I said I'll mention the detail of The Ship and The Commander's mission being searching for love? I think this can also be read as the bond between him and The Narrator as being love itself. Noel is saying the bond between them was love itself and yet he changed it to be with Sara, because he loved her more than that. He's acknowledging that in this song. The title chosen is "There She Blows!", the ship sailing away, the theme of the song is about how Noel's relationship with Liam was love itself and he abandoned it to be with Sara, but despite that, he decided to have a bond with Liam again and he's willing to move forward with it, wants Sara to be with him but also won't wait for her if she decides to not support him.
I think that's all for this analysis. Thanks for reading!
