Ich muss im richtigen Tab lachen
Ich unterhalte mich in einem Gathertown-Raum mit mehreren Personen und schweife während des Gesprächs etwas ab. Ich bin also in mehreren anderen Tabs meines Browsers unterwegs, höre aber weiterhin das Gespräch der restlichen Gruppe im Hintergrund.
Gathertown hat eine Standardeinstellung, bei der automatisch mein Mikrofon und meine Kamera deaktiviert werden, sobald ich den Tab verlasse. Ich weiß noch gar nicht, ob ich diese Funktion gut finde, und deshalb weiß ich auch nicht, ob ich sie aktiviert oder deaktiviert habe.
Jemand sagt etwas Lustiges. Bevor ich darüber lache, wechsele ich zurück in den Tab mit der Gesellschaft, um sicherzugehen, dass mein wohlwollendes Lachen auch tatsächlich gehört und gesehen wird. Danach streune ich weiter durch meinen restlichen Browser.

Im Virtuellen gibt es wenigstens die G-Taste
Für die erneut ausfallende Weihnachtsfeier hat die Firma dieses Jahr ein gather.town eingerichtet, in dem man sich mit Kollegen treffen kann. Man bastelt sich einen kleinen Avatar und läuft dann damit durch eine virtuelle Welt. Wenn man sich zu anderen Avataren stellt, kann man sie wie in einer Videokonferenz sehen und mit ihnen reden. Wenn man sich von ihnen entfernt, sieht und hört man sich auch nicht mehr. Es funktioniert erstaunlich gut so, wie es auch auf einer Weihnachtsfeier mit physischer Präsenz funktionieren würde.
“Guck mal, wenn man sich um jemanden rumstellt, dann kann er nicht mehr weg gehen”, entdeckt jemand und es ist fast tatsächlich so. Wenn man von Avataren umringt ist, kann man sich nicht mehr bewegen. Es gibt jedoch einen Trick, mit dem es doch geht, man muss beim Laufen auf G drücken, dann wird man zum Geist und kann durch Dinge und Avatare durchlaufen.
“Na ja”, sage ich. “Das ist aber auch in der Realität so. Wenn wir uns da in einer Gruppe um eine Person stellen, kann die auch nicht mehr weg.”
Das Virtuelle ist wirklich gar nicht so viel anders als das Physische, nur hat man da immerhin G-Tasten.

I'm back! It's been a few weeks of crazy renovation work, online conference organisation, administrative drama (don't get me started on German admin...), and settling in to the new house. But now, even though the renovations are definitely not finished, we at least have the bulk of the main rooms sorted. And so I decided it was about time I return to my regular scheduled work, which of course includes maintaining this account and spreading the joy of archaeology, crafting, and PhD life! . Today is a computer-based day. I'm mainly editing my own drafts and proof-reading a friend's thesis, but I also had a little bit of fun creativity this morning. Next week I'll be co-chairing a session at the online SAA conference (Society for American Archaeology). It was supposed to be held in San Francisco, and my principal task amongst my co-chairs was to organise the social aspect of the session. Ideally, this would have been a cute little bar or whacky restaurant in San Fran, but as it is all now online I've had to improvise. So today I've been building a little rooftop terrace in Gathertown, with views overlooking the Bay bridge and plenty of comfy spaces for our session participants to interact with each other. I'm very curious to see how it turns out during the event itself! . It's crazy to think that it's now been over a year of nearly constant lockdown for many of us. I can't remember what it feels like any more to meet with more than a couple of people at a time. Considering how normal it is in the modern far for large groups of people to gather together, either for travel or socialisation, it will be very interesting to see how society functions once things are back to "normal". Perhaps we'll stick to our little communities ("bubbles") for a while, and maintain the smaller scale interactions that we've been forced into over the last year. What do you think? .
