Gartelmann Wines celebrate their 21st with the release of 2018 whites
In 1999 vignerons Jorg and Jan Gartelmann built a new cellar door on their vineyard in the Hunter Valley and opened their doors to the public and released the Gartelmann brand.
21 years later they are following a winemaking philosophy of producing wines from the best regions of New South Wales.  Two of these wines are the new 2018 Gartelmann â Stephanieâ Pinot Gris ($27) from the highlands of Orange, and their 2018 Gartelmann âJessicaâ Verdelho ($22) from the fabled Hunter Valley.
The 2018 vintage in Australiaâs oldest winegrowing region, the Hunter Valley, was one of the earliest and quickest on record. âThere were winemakers harvesting during the first week of January,â commented Jorg Gartelmann, âwith some finished before February.â
âOur Verdelho, named in honour of Janâs mother, was picked on the 17thJanuary with the grapes showing lovely ripe varietal flavours. It was a vintage of lower yields, but standout quality, especially for Chardonnay, Semillon, Shiraz and Verdelho.â
Verdelho is a variety that has found a home in the Hunter Valley. Â Traditionally this Portuguese native was made into a fortified wine, however the Hunter Valley produces Verdelho that is light and fruit driven. âOur Verdelho is a firm favourite at the cellar door. As an early drinking style, without oak maturation, we are finding that customers are looking toward it as an alternative to Sauvignon Blanc
âWith vintage complete in the Hunter, we were able to give the later ripening region of Orange our full attention.
âThe Pinot Gris, âStephanieâ, named after my daughter, has become a best seller at the Cellar Door. We continue to fine-tune it each year as we build experience with this variety.
âThe 18-year-old Orange vineyard produces some of the best Pinot Gris in the region. We harvested on the 12th February after a dry season. Supplementary watering ensured a quality crop, albeit slightly lower than usual.
âAfter 21 years we still love building relationships with our grape growers and our customers. We spend a lot of our time in the Hunter Valley as well Orange, Rylstone and Mudgee. Our relationships with these growers is crucial; it ensures that the grapes are grown to the quality we require, with the growers knowing how much we value their commitment to growing the best fruit they can.â
2018 Gartelmann âStephanieâ Pinot Gris (Orange, NSW) Â $27.00
2018 Gartelmann âJessicaâ Verdelho (Hunter Valley, NSW) Â $22.00

Gartelmann âBordeauxâ varieties released with 4 years bottle age
Gartelmann Wines has released their 2016 Gartelmann âGeorgâ Petit Verdot ($35) and 2016 Gartelmann âPhillip Alexanderâ Cabernet Merlot ($30), both with a number of years maturation.
The wines were made from grapes grown in Rylstone, an unofficial sub-region of Mudgee. Rylstone, with a population of only 650 people, sits between the meandering Cudgegon River and the world heritage listed Wollemi National Park.
âThe region is producing lovely red varieties,â commented vigneron Jorg Gartelmann. âThe vineyard lies at an elevation of 630 meters, substantially higher than the Mudgee valley which is around 450-500m elevation. This ensures a longer, cooler ripening period which builds complex, elegant flavours.â
The 2016 was ideal, with above average rainfall in December through to February, drying off until harvest at the end of March. âVintage was ideal, allowing us to let the fruit ripen fully and harvest accordingly. We werenât pressured by the weather to pick the grapes.â
The 2016 Gartelmann âGeorgâ Petit Verdot, named after Jorgâs WWI Fighter Ace Grandfather Leutnant Georg Meyer. Georg was a highly decorated pilot who was tragically killed after the war in a motorcycle accident at the age of 33.
The wine was matured for 17 months in a combination of new and seasoned French and American oak prior to another 30 months in bottle. âWe were adamant that we should release these wines with some bottle age in order to show our customers the benefit of cellaring and the beginning of the aging process.â
The 2016 Gartelmann âPhillip Alexanderâ Cabernet Merlot is named after a younger family member, Jorgâs son Phillip.
âWe have been making wine from this 17-year-old vineyard for a number of years,â continued Jorg. âIt is a fantastic vineyard which consistently produces very well-balanced fruit. Having both the Cabernet Sauvignon (52.5%) and Merlot (47.5%) from the same vineyard, picked a week apart, ensures that the wine reflects the terroir of the region.â Â
2016 Gartelmann âGeorgâ Petit Verdot (Mudgee, NSW) Â $35.00

The awards have continued for Gartelmann Wines with their summer releases, the 2018 Gartelmann âSarah Elizabethâ Chardonnay and partner 2018 Gartelmann âBenjaminâ Semillon having an impressive four golds and two trophies between them.
The 2018 Gartelmann âSarah Elizabethâ Chardonnay was awarded the Best White Wine of the Show and Best Young Chardonnay at the 2019 Orange Wine Show, under the guidance of Wine Show Chairman Nick Bulleid MW.Â
The show received 50 entrants in this Chardonnay class, with 68% receiving a medal. The Chardonnay was judged by the full judging team, comprising Sarah Andrew, Stuart Knox, Jeff Byrne, Deb Lauritz, James Manners, Will Wilson, Monica Gray and Steve Mobbs.
âThe Wine Show Committee have done a fantastic job pulling together a diverse judging team, with winemakers from within and outside of the region, as well as sommeliers. We believe that this ensures a rigorous judging of the wines, especially when it is overseen by a Master of Wine with the extensive experience of Nick Bulleid,â said owner and vigneron Jorg Gartelmann.
The 2018 Gartelmann âSarah Elizabethâ Chardonnay was harvested on the 6thMarch and barrel fermented in new and one year old 500 litre puncheons and 300 litre hogsheads with the objective of achieving subtle oak characters. The wine was then matured in oak for ten months with monthly lees stirring, freshness and vitality preserved by inhibiting malolactic fermentation.
The 2018 Gartelmann âBenjaminâ Semillon was made from grapes grown on the Glenesk Vineyard in the Upper Hunter sub region. Harvested on the 17thJanuary, the wine was fermented and bottled soon after in order to capture the regional character.
âWe are extremely happy with our Semillon,â continued Jorg. âOver the years we have continued to produce award winning wines year on year. The consistency is fantastic, with many vintages awarded gold medals.â

Gartelmann Wines have released their new vintage Orange region Merlot and Mudgee region Cabernet Sauvignon. The new wines, the 2015 Gartelmann âJoeyâ Merlot ($30) and 2015 Gartelmann âJonathanâ Cabernet Sauvignon ($35), continue Jorg and Jan Gartelmannâs philosophy of producing varieties that are best suited to their regions.
âOne of the most rewarding aspects of our winemaking is working with grape growers across the Hunter Valley, Orange, Mudgee and Rylstone,â said Jorg.Â
âDiscovering these vineyards and working with the growers to develop the wines to highlight the regional characteristics really captures our wine philosophy.â
The new Merlot was grown on 15-year-old vines at an elevation of 630 metres. 2015 saw a number of snowfalls in Orange, which evolved into a warm dry spring. While there was substantial rain in January, the vintage developed well with excellent colour and rich fruit flavours.
âThis is our second vintage Orange region merlot, with our first awarded the trophy at the Orange Wine Show. This gave us great confidence with the vineyard.
âThe grapes were transported to the Hunter Valley, with winemaker Liz Jackson using a combination of new and one to three-year-old French oak puncheons to mature the wine.â
The 2015 Gartelmann âJonathanâ Cabernet Sauvignon, named after Jorg Gartelmannâs grandson, was made from a vineyard block located on the western side of Rylstone at an elevation of 630 metres. âThis vintage sits at a similar elevation to many in Orange; cooler and higher than most of the Mudgee vineyards.
âAs with Orange, the rains came in January which was worrying. However, from early March to when we picked the grapes in mid-April the weather was dry, ensuring a perfect ripening period.
âMudgee and Rylstone Cabernet Sauvignon has huge potential, with its fine, long and prominent tannins. The region is arguably one of Australiaâs best for the variety. These are wines to have with food; wines with great longevity.â

Charmed vintages in two of NSWâs oldest winegrowing regions
Gartelmann Wines have released their latest vintage 2015 Gartelmann âJesseâ Shiraz ($30) and 2018 Gartelmann âBenjaminâ Semillon ($27); wines from charmed vintages in two of NSWâs oldest winegrowing regions.
For the past decade Gartelmann Wines owners Jorg and Jan Gartelmann have built a network of like-minded grape growers across the Hunter Valley and Central Ranges wine regions, with the objective of making the best wines from the regionâs best varieties.
The new Shiraz was made from grapes grown on Mudgeeâs 41 year old Muller Vineyard, located next to the famous Mountain Blue vineyard. âThis is one of Mudgeeâs best sub regions,â explained Jorg. âWe often talk about temperature, elevation and sunlight hours and how they influence vines. However the influence on the vineâs roots are just as crucial for the development of grapes.
âOne of the most influential is soil pH. This vineyard, with its fertile soils that are high in calcium and alkali in nature, has a pH of 7.5 to 8.0 at a depth of one metre. Many of the worldâs best vineyards have similar soil pH level, above 7.0 pH, which allows the plants to more readily access micronutrients and minerals.â
The 2015 vintage in Mudgee also contributed favourably, with cooler ripening conditions, good soil moisture and a dry harvest ensuring the grapes were picked in optimum conditions. The wine was then matured for 15 months in a combination of one to three year old French and American hogsheads and puncheons.
Named in honour of Janâs father and grandson, the new 2018 Gartelmann âBenjaminâ Semillon was made from grapes grown on the historic Pyramid Hill vineyard in the Upper Hunter. âThis vineyard was purchased by John Hordern three years ago and, with significant focus on the pruning regime, has seen a substantial lift in quality, particular with shiraz, verdelho and semillon.â
The Hunter Valley is one of the worldâs most important regions for Semillon. Â âSemillon produces wines of great sophistication,â said Jorg. âThese are wines that have won respect across the world for their longevity and complexity. The wines are true representation of the region, as there is very little winemaker intervention. The grapes are picked and bottled early, mostly without any oak maturation; it is all about the fruit and the transformation of the wine over time.â

Gartelmann releases their Orange Region Flagship wines
Gartelmann Wines has released two of their flagship wines, the highly awarded 2015 Gartelmann âDiedrichâ Shiraz ($50) and the inaugural 2017 Gartelmann âLisaâ Chardonnay ($40).
âThese two Orange Region wines are the pinnacle of our winemaking and have been made in keeping with our philosophy of producing the best wines from the regions in which these particular varieties respond so well,â explained owner Jorg Gartelmann.
âOrange is developing a reputation for its cool climate Chardonnay and Shiraz and complements what we are making in the Hunter. The regions produce distinctive styles and itâs exciting to compare the differences.â
The Gartelmann âDiedrichâ Shiraz, named in honour of owner Jorgâs grandfather, is a single vineyard wine from a small vineyard block just north of Orange at an elevation of 630 metres. The wine was matured for 18 months in a combination of new and one to three year old American and French puncheons and hogsheads.
The 2017 Gartelmann âLisaâ Chardonnay (with its new label) shows the characters derived from the higher climes of Orange. The 19 year old vineyard, sitting at an elevation of 930 meters, experienced a dry lead up to vintage with slightly warmer than average conditions allowing an ideal vintage.
Upon harvest, the wine was barrel fermented in new and one year old French oak puncheons and hogsheads. The wine was matured for ten months with monthly lees stirring in order to build complexity. Inhibiting malolatic fermentation preserved the freshness of the cool climate fruit.

Cabernet sauvignon from the Hunter Valley rarely wins gold medals in wine shows. But Hunter winery Gartelmann (tastings) won gold for its 2010 cabernet sauvignon in the 2013 Boutique Wine Awards.
A second look reveals it was not made from Hunter grapes, though, but Rylstone. Rylstone is officially part of the Mudgee region but its high altitude means itâs better known for delicate white wines than reds.
The source is De Beaurepaireâs (tastings) extensive 54-hectare vineyard, at 570 to 600 metres altitude. The wine is an elegant, medium-bodied, cool-climate style with violet and briar aromas. Itâs $35 at Jorg and Jan Gartelmannâs Hunter cellar door on Lovedale Road.
