I've seen mothers running away from them with their children.

'The police is there for your safety'

Oh yeah, of course. The safety of our non-freedom you mean, right?

La raíz del conflicto que se vive estos días en Gamonal, el barrio donde nací y crecí, lo representa mejor que cualquier otra cosa un simple banco, verde, metálico. De esos que los que en invierno te quedas helado al sentarte y en verano arden al darles el sol.

Dichos bancos fueron colocados allí hace treinta años por la Caja Municipal de Burgos (ahora extinta, víctima de la burbuja), y en Gamonal han permanecido como muestra de la falta de inversiones y reformas en el barrio hasta que sus habitantes, hartos tal vez de que les recuerden el olvido de Lacalle y de los que le precedieron, levantaron con ellos barricadas para detener el último proyecto faraónico del Ayuntamiento.

Estos bancos han protagonizado muchas de las imágenes que hemos visto estos días. Defendían a mayores y niños, a las amas de casa que protestaban, a los jóvenes burgaleses que tiraban piedras… de las porras de la Policía Nacional. Era su último servicio antes de pasar al olvido en la chatarrería.

Es hora de cambiar los bancos de Gamonal. Y también de muchas otras cosas en el barrio que se han quedado desfasadas, inservibles, y haciendo más incómoda la vida diaria. Pero estos cambios nunca más se podrán hacer sin los vecinos, ni mucho menos contra los vecinos. El que lo vuelva a intentar ya sabe lo que le espera.

Pues así, hablando en plata, que los vecinos están hasta las narices de que los tomen por bobos. De que el ayuntamiento haga una obra faraónica e innecesaria cuando el centro de salud lo tienen en un local comercial, la biblioteca se les cae a cachos y la guardería necesita 15000€ que nadie pone para continuar con su funcionamiento. Esto no es por un boulevard.

Los vecinos que protestan no son jóvenes radicales de extrema izquierda como dicen los políticos, ya les gustaría... Son la abuela que sostiene a la familia con su pensión, el padre prejubilado de la Firestone que a sus cincuentaytantos ya no tiene mucho que hacer o la hija a la que Burgos le ha negado el futuro y a la que no le quedará más remedio que emigrar a Inglaterra en un vuelo barato. 

Si algo me ha llamado la atención ha sido el encontrarme con muchos conocidos de este barrio (mi pueblo está en la provincia) que no creían posible la actuación policial que estaban viviendo. Se acordaban de cuando los colegas del País Vasco volvían al pueblo y les contaban historias sobre las situaciones de excepción que allí se daban, y a las que no daban crédito porque los medios no lo contaban. Ahora se les ha caído la venda de los ojos y se han dado cuenta de que probablemente fuesen ciertas, que lo que cuentan los mass mierda nada tiene que ver con la realidad. También cuando han visto como a sus hijos les apaleaba la policía sin razón alguna. 

Please, let me tell you what's going on here...

I live in Burgos, this very quiet, small town in the north of Spain, in the district of Gamonal, the typical working-class neighbourhood.

Some months ago, the mayor of our city stated that he was going to turn the main road of Gamonal (Vitoria Street) in a boulevard.

First of all, our city council is one of the most indebted in Spain. Do you know how many money is going to be spent in this boulevard? 8 million euros. Yeah, not big deal, everyone has 8 million euros to spend on a great building place that is going to paralyze the traffic of the main road in the city for the next two years. Yeah, yeah, so great.

Oh, but guess what! For the last years another boulevard has been built on the other side of the town. And guess more! It's still not paid!

So now we have two boulevards to pay, in the middle of probably the greatest economical crisis our country has been through.

But, hey, there's even more! At the moment, Vitoria Street has two lanes in each direction. The new proyect will left only one for each directon behind, and no parking places for all the people living there.

Of course, no one in the neighbourhood wants it done.

And, of course, no one has asked us if we wanted it.

So the people started manifestating PEACEFULLY two months ago. But no one heard or, better said, no one wanted to hear.

This leads me to last Friday night, when a reduced group of people started burning some trash containers. How many of them? Well, they couldn't be more than 4 or 5. But here comes the greatest thing... THE MEDIA SAID THEY WERE 300 CONTAINERS. THERE'S NOT EVEN SO MANY IN ALL THE NEIGHBOURHOOD.

We appeared in the national news, so we were heard for the first time in two months of, I repeat, peaceful protests.

The riots have been going on since then, and when I say riots it means some more burned containers and two banks' glasses broken. But some politicians are calling us terrorists and saying that what is going on here is a pitched battle against the police when actually, it's just some people wanting to be heard.

The national media is talking about it, but they don't tell everything...

Last night, the police declared a curfew: Everyone on the streets would be hit and arrested. No motives needed.

They've been arresting people for NO REASON during last nights, beating up people just because they were on the streets, beating people because they didn't want their sons and daughters arrested for no reason. I've seen riot police hiding behind the corners so in case anyone passes by, they can shoot rubber balls to them.

We're supposed to live in a democratic country, in a free country. But all the repression is showing that this is not like that anymore.

If I'm writing this, it's because we need to be heard. We want the world to know that Spain is not all fiesta, toros and paella. We have serious problems here, but the media never says a thing.
