I agree so much with Dana and the few others who chimed in- while I can't say if I'm autistic, (never diagnosed) , I do share some traits and the comic never read that way to me either. I do the same as Dana and others in giving Zim parental loved ones in my au(s), and I think as long as it's clear he's perfectly capable of taking care of himself, that these cuties just want to show their gratitude to him, then it's 100% okay in my eyes.
