In June, the deadlines start, and they won’t stop coming. To lessen the burden, I hope to prepare well this May.

This shit.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a wonderful and beautiful game with good challenges and fun combat mechanics. You get an incredibly diverse range of weapons and abilities, and you even get to craft some of your own equipment!

The game starts off with an unknown woman describing a war between mortals (Humans, elves, and even gnomes) and creatures called the Fae. In this intro sequence, you learn that everyone thought it was the fate of mortals to all perish in this war, “until you died”.

The game’s premise is centered on the fact that your character was resurrected and exists outside of Fate’s weave, and you can even change it, for good or ill.

Every creature you encounter, every monster, every Fae, every mortal, you leave something in Fate’s weave changed just by being around them.

The game also has interesting creatures! Creatures that exist in this game and world alone. There’s pre-established legends of creatures with a newer twist, and interesting ones.And their combat is well done! The monsters pose a real challenge, even on easy mode. You’re forced to learn what the creatures are vulnerable to, you have to learn their attack patterns. The varying weapon types make the battles a little easier, as you get to find which types best suit your play style. From staves and daggers, to chakrams and faeblades, to war hammers, greatswords, and longswords, and bows, you’ve got plenty of options to choose from, with no shortage of abilities.

Now, as for any issues with the game, there are some. There are plenty of characters that are kind of archetypes. Agarth, an old drunken mentor who’s seen too much. Alyn-Shir, a mysterious seductress kind of rouge no one really knows much about. Professor Hughes, an older eccentric professor and scientist.

Overall, however, I find them to be likable characters.

The animations, mostly lip syncing, can be awkward, but it’s overall ignorable.

Now, the Fae...

Are very important to the story. They’re immortal, stubborn creatures of magic who embody nature and are very unused to change or new things. Show many of them something that goes against what they know, they’ll dismiss it as false or impossible. Why they’re so important is because you are fighting The Winter Court of Fae, the Fae that embody the decay and ending of life. They were twisted and changed, something that isn’t supposed to happen to them at all.

You spend the game encountering the Summer Fae, those that embody growth and life, and can even become ruler of one of their houses, the House of Ballads. The High King of Summer himself predicted your very existance as The Fateless One!

What I find unique about this game is the way they make your character a blank slate. You died. You lost your memories upon resurrection. You remember maybe only your name and how to fight and speak. Your past is lost, your personality must even be reformed. The only links to your past in the game are your former employer, and your ex-accomplice, Alyn.

And every time you get to make a big choice, you're reminded of your power. To shape Fate for good or ill. Its a huge responsibility for a person, but its fascinating that this is what your character's unique talent is.

Now, I guess the plot hole in the game could be the simple fact that it seems Fate designed its self to be unweaved.

You were destined to die, destined to be resurrected and to be without Fate. Fate let in a Fateless mortal for what purpose?

I guess to see what might happen? If you let Fate proceed as planned, or if you change it and leave Fate unraveled.

Regardless, obviously your objective is to save the world and change Fate.

I'm sad to say that the company that made this game is gone, so who knows if there will be anything else to this series.
