I forgot how much I loved aos 1x06 "FZZT". It was one of my favourite episodes from the first season, but rewatching it now and while it's just as good as I remembered theres' one tiny bothersome detail at the end.
Jemma, who had just been infected with a deadly virus and had 2 hours to figure out a cure for herself, chooses to sacrifice herself and jump off the plane hundreds of feet in the air (literally choosing to off herself to protect the team) and then is rescued by Ward.
After that horrific ordeal, she's finally safe and guess what's the immediate scene that plays afterwards?
Her calling Fitz a hero and telling him not to be upset that HE wasn't the one who saved her.
My girl nearly died and yet the first scene she had with Fitz afterwards is HER comforting HIM and NOT the other way around.
Girl, how in the world did Ward do a better job at comforting Simmons? Like what? Skye immediately hugs her, Coulson tells her he'd hate to lose her, Ward is sweet and understanding making her laugh and calling her brave, and then there's Fitz throwing himself a pity party and wallowing in his insecurities while SHE was the one in danger.

"Fitz.â
The one word from Coulson caused him to freeze. There was something about it that scared him. Something about the way he had said it - it wasnât the Couslon that he had grown to know over the recent months.
It was the voice that someone, a parent, would use when there was bad news.
The voice that his mum had used when she was telling him that his granny had passed away in the night.
It was the voice that heralded bad news.
âWhat? Is everything okay?â He spun, setting the tablet on the counter next to him. So many different scenarios ran through his head, but the two words from Coulson were words that he wasnât expecting.
âItâs Jemma.â
And that was all that he needed before he started running, making his way to the lab, and she was standing there, a look of pure shock on her face. Eyes wide, tear tracks on her cheeks.Â
He must have mirrored her on the other side of the glass, the red light on the door showing that it was under quarantine
âSimmons⌠what?â He was unable to find the words needed to form the question. It wasnât like him to find himself speechless, especially around her. âWhat happened?â
Because this couldnât be happening. She couldnât be ill. She couldnât be infected.
Not with an alien virus that had no cure. Not to something that would emit an electrostatic pulse that would fry her brilliant, beautiful brain.
âIt was the Troop Leader. I think⌠I got a shock from him. It passed the infection on to me.â Her words were too analytical. As though she were trying to think about this in a way where she wasnât the patient. As though this were happening to someone else. âI didnât⌠I didnât realise. I thought the headaches were just from stress. Lack of sleep.â She rubbed at her face with her hands, clearly agitated. âYou know I got them during exam season at the Academy. I thought that it was just that. It was Coulson who realised. I was too late in noticing. And by that timeâŚâ Gesturing at her body with her hands said all the words that remained unspoken. âI need you, Fitz. To help me.â
He nodded. âWhat⌠what do you need from me?â
âI need,â she began before pausing, taking a moment to pause, to breathe, to think. He knew that her mind would be racing, working through every hypothesis that it could. âI need you to make a device, one that can suspend a mineralised solution and can conduct electricity. I have to make an anti-serum. Something that can fight something like this. And conduct electricity. I need something that will allow for it, the anti-serum, to be administered, and I need you to make it.â
That⌠that would be difficult. Something like that⌠it had rarely been made before. And those who had, they had been more unsuccessful than successful. He needed time, but time was something that he did not have. âHow long do we - ?â But once again, he was rendered speechless. Something just to her left, several inches behind her, had caught his attention.
Seeing it happening, it confirmed that all of his worst fears were happening. That this wasnât a mistake.
A selection of lab tools was floating in the air, and when she noticed him staring, she turned to see what he was staring at.
They fell once with a jolt of electricity, and she flinched and winced, as though in pain. But she never turned back around to face him, choosing instead to continue her conversation with the space where he should be.Â
âHow long? Based on when the firefighters were infected and how long it took until they⌠I have just under⌠just under three hours.â Her composure broke on those last words as she admitted that her time left was no longer measured in years, but hours. The length of a film. âFitz, please.â She turned to face him, breaking down for the first time. Tears were clinging to her lashes. âI need your help. I canât do this without you. Please. Help me.â
âOf course.â There was never any question to be asked. Never any plea that needed to be given. He would help her. He would always help her. They were a team.
They were FitzSimmons.
So after instructing her on what he needed and accepting the tools and materials that had been passed out to him, he took his position, his watch, in the garage of the Bus, his back pressed against the glass, and without even looking over his shoulder, he knew that she was doing the same in the lab.
I know that we as a fandom harp a lot about the glories of 1x17 (as we should. It's an incredible episode and we rightfully give it the praise it deserves) but I would like to suggest that we choose a different episode to bring people in
See, the problem with 1x17 is that it's 17 episodes down the line. If I went into a show and was told that it started getting good near the finish line, I likely would not watch it. To have someone sit through "mediocre" (they really aren't, they're wonderful, but you know what I mean) for the promise of a great one a long while away, isn't very effective to get people to watch the show
Instead, I believe we should nominate 1x06, "FZZT". In case you don't know what I'm talking about, "FZZT" is the one where Jemma contracts an alien virus and spends basically the whole time trying to find a cure under penalty of death, not only for herself, but for the whole team, as the pulses she sends out could send the plane down
It's not too far from the first episode, making this easily achievable, and adds a level of risk we haven't seen so far from this show. "Pilot" was fine, "0-8-4" was fine, "Eye Spy" was fine, but all of these are relatively standalone episodes where you can predict a large majority of the plot points. "FZZT", I believe, is where you can start to see AoS develop a darker tone, and it fully benefits from it
There's also a wonderful speech from Coulson he says to one of the dying firefighters, and just. I love this moment:
"Coulson: Listen to me. I've been where you are right now. So please believe me when I tell you you donât have to be afraid.
Diaz: What are you⌠what are you talking about?
Coulson: Your job⌠gets pretty dangerous, doesn't it? Mine, too. I got hurt once⌠pretty bad. And I-I died. Some say it was only for 8 seconds, but I know it was more than that. I know I wasn't here anymore. I was there.
Diaz: What's it like?
Coulson: It's beautiful."
(It's also where Coulson begins to question TAHITI, so doubly whammy)
All in all, I think we should be recommending and speaking more about "FZZT". Give newer fans a chance to settle in, have them reach for something easier than 1x17. It'll pay off
