After 9+ years here on Tumblr, I’ve decided to move FYFD to a new platform and a new host. That migration will take place today Sunday, November 17th, and hopefully in just a short while, you’ll see FYFD in its new home, with a totally new look. Here’s some answers to a few of the questions you might have:
Honestly, I’ve resisted leaving Tumblr for a long time, but there are two main reasons I decided to go through with this process (which has taken me about six months of painstaking work behind-the-scenes). The first is that the community on Tumblr has stagnated, if not shrunk, in recent years. The platform simply doesn’t attract an audience the way it used to, and that’s something I’ve struggled with.
The second and most important reason is to secure FYFD’s future availability. I’ve built an extensive archive of more than 2,400 posts here, and I’d like them to be available indefinitely, but I have no control over Tumblr. It could disappear tomorrow or next week, and, without migration, all of FYFD would disappear with it. But this move provides me with direct control over FYFD and its entire archive, so that I can keep it secure, backed up, and freely available to the world.
Will there still be new posts on Tumblr?
I plan to keep the full posts on the new site, but I’ll still post to Tumblr Monday through Friday with links pointing to the new site, so if you’re used to watching from your dashboard, you’ll still see when FYFD updates.
What if I want to access the site during migration?
While the site is getting migrated, the usual URL, fyfluiddynamics.com, will not work. You’ll still be able to find old material here on Tumblr using the original URL. Once the migration is over, fyfluiddynamics.com will point to the new host and the Tumblr will still be accessible at its original address.Â
Will old links still work once the migration is over?
Any links like https://fyfluiddynamics.com/post/189082879328/complex-fluids-leave-behind-fascinating-stains should auto-redirect, post-migration. If you find ones that don’t, please let me know so that I can fix that!
I hope you’ll all be pleased with the final result, and I look forward to welcoming you to the new FYFD once I finish! Thank you, as always, for your support; I couldn’t do any of this without you guys!
ETA:Â The migrated site should be up and available at https://fyfluiddynamics.com, and, from what I can tell, things appear to be working. There will no doubt be some hiccups here and there, so please bear with me!
