Diary of A Work-from-home Dad special: Future, Illustrated No. 2: “The Future of Work” I worked in a studio setup for 5 years immediately after graduation, and have been self-employed since 2011. The nature of my work has always been dealing with overseas clients from different time zones. This has shaped how I manage and steer my career to this day. Collaborative technologies have greatly demolished the walls of physical workplaces, and service-related work is no longer limited and/or bound to geographical space and time. Who knows, in the future, we might be able to beam our virtual selves to perform physical tasks that today require us to travel? I have created a series of comics across the areas of digital transformation, future of work, and artificial intelligence that relate to my life as a work-from-home father, to generate further discussions amongst the public about the impact of technology on our lives - no matter where we live, or how different our lives might be. Diary of A Work-from-home Dad special: Future, Illustrated No. 1: “Future Learners” Screen time can be good and bad depending on what is on the screen and the time spent on it. What started as out of necessity to help “babysit” my eldest while caregiving my special needs with #SmithMagenisSyndrome youngest has become a boon to her soft skills in her formative years. Over the course of the pandemic, parenting has been impacted by rapid technological change. Perspectives have shifted, alongside visions of the future. Questions that we have pondered over the past year include, how has technology shaped our lives, aspirations and visions? Dalya, my second born, was diagnosed with Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS) after a blood test in 2021 when she was 2 years old. The rarity of a child to be born with SMS is 1 to 25,000 worldwide. The general hospital did not have any record of other positives the day we received the test result, so we were left to our own devices. One of the SMS traits is the Jekyll and Hyde condition - Dalya is easily over excited in one second, and in the next she can snap and get frustrated to a point of a violent burst of emotions. The trigger can be as simple as talking over her acceptable audible volume or being unable to communicate her wants. We do our best to understand her, but a lot of times it is a guessing game through trial and error. Despite the "shortcut method” controversies in producing art using A.I. among industry professionals (myself included), seeing how disabled artists such as Tony Quan and M Eifler (AKA BlinkPopShift) utilise A.I. to create works that communicate with their audience makes me hope that one day, technology can help visualise or translate the needs and wants of special needs children who are non-verbal to alleviate the mentally challenging task of caregiving.
