Hi internet dad! I just applied to Ivy Tech, and even though it's a daytime community college, I was wondering do you have any first time college advice? I graduated hs 3 years ago, so it's a little daunting to me to get back up on the study horse, but I'mma do it! :D I hope your day goes great. Don't forget to be awesome! :3
Congratulations on getting back into education and starting work on your degree! I hope you have a great time.
Hmm, first time college advice. A lot of my advice for college tends to be about how to navigate living in dorms and being away from home for the first time and learning to adult, which for various reasons you probably don’t need. But I would say in terms of classes, make sure you note all the deadlines when things are due in the class syllabuses, and work on long-term projects a little each week (getting started is always the hardest). Do the reading, but if you have a ton of reading, prioritize the really important or really difficult stuff; once in a while you can wing it on the rest. Try to make friends and network if you can, because a study group can be really helpful. Be aware of what services the administrative offices can offer (counseling, financial aid, disability services, tutoring, etc).
I wrote a book a while ago called Other People Can Smell You, which is a guide to surviving life at college. You can get a free PDF here. A lot of this you can probably skim, but there is a chapter on how to write essays and papers that you may find helpful, and I also talk about studying and taking good notes and stuff. Basically you can skim for stuff that looks relevant, it’s a pretty short book anyway.
Good luck! Be excited, this is gonna be awesome!
