writers don’t gatekeep, so these are my tips for writing guns!

as a girl who loves shooting things, i am not a professional, but i do know how to fire a gun. so these are tip for writing guns correctly.

do not, under any circumstances, listen to what hollywood says about guns. it is wrong. all of it.

here we go!

guns are hot. like, there was just a mini explosion inside it. your character cannot stop shooting and immediately jam it into their pants. they will be burned. in fact, try to avoid shoving your gun into your pants whether or not it’s hot.

bullet shells that fall out after you fire the gun are also hot. i have been burned by them before.

2. you can’t fire one handed very accurately. at all. trust me, i’ve tried. unless you are a very, very, very experienced shooter who knows their gun very well, you could probably fire one handed and hit somewhere in the general area (not exactly!) of where you’re aiming. otherwise, no.

3. the muzzle of a gun does not flash when you fire it. never. ever. ever. not once have i seen that happen. if i catch any of you writing “i saw the gun flash as it fired”, i’m going to sue.

4. guns are loud. firing one without proper ear protection can easily blow out your hearing for a bit. i like to use both headphones and earplugs because i have sensitive hearing.

5. kick back. guns have this thing where when the mini explosion happens, it can jerk the gun backwards into your body. for handguns, the gun muzzle will go up a little bit (causing you to need to aim again after every shot) and for bigger guns, like shotguns, you can literally dislocate your shoulder if you’re not holding it correctly. (i fired my dad’s shotgun once and my shoulder was hurting for a straight week)

6. it’s not a silencer, it’s a suppressor. like i said, don’t listen to hollywood, not even with the terminology.

7. bullets go straight. unless you’re doing some magical six of crows jesper fahey type shit, if you fire your bullet in a straight line, it is not going to make a sharp 90 degree turn to hit your enemy straight in the forehead. that’s just basic laws of physics.

8. you have to fucking aim. while it may be perfectly dramatic, nobody can take a shot with their eyes closed and it hit their target square in the center. in fact, pretty much everyone struggles with hitting their target while their eyes are wide open, so don’t even start with closing your eyes. you gotta aim. also, you pretty much have to re-aim after every shot because of the kickback, the gun will move.
