New Character: Toad and Toadette (Tag team)
Game(s) of origin: Super Mario Bros/Mario Kart Double Dash!
Probability of inclusion: Moderate
Toad! Toadette! Love 'em or hate 'em, Toads have been a staple in the Mario franchise since day one. But how could you hate Toad? Just look at that happy face! Toad is the name of the species, but there is also a recurring character named Toad. (Much like Yoshi) Toad debuted in Super Mario Bros, alerting Mario of Bowser's treachery and uttering the famous phrase "Thank you Mario! But our princess is in another castle!" Toad went on to become a playable character in Super Mario Bros 2, only to have the privilege of being playable in a main Mario adventure revoked until New Super Mario Bros Wii. Between that time, Toad filled various roles in the many Mario games to pop up, often times acting as a guide character. Toadette, Toad's female counterpart, debuted in Mario Kart: Double Dash! as Toad's partner, but has had other appearances in franchises such as Mario Party, Mario sports, and even Mario Galaxy.
These characters were inspired by tumblr user Kirsties-Alley saying that he'd like to see these two in the game as a tag-team. You maybe be saying "Hey, if Toad becomes a playable character, then what will we do about Peach's counter attack?" Well, it could always be left unchanged, or she could protect herself with a different colored Toad. Or, we could go with my personal favorite idea and have her protect herself with Toadsworth. Furthermore, I think another pair of Toads that could be used in place of these two could be Yvan and Wolley. If you're not familiar with those two, they're the fan-given nicknames for the Yellow and (Navy) Blue toads that you can play as in the NSMB Wii series. So perhaps an alternate color pallet for these two could turn them yellow and blue, in reference to the two Toad heroes that hang with the plumbers.
These two's special attacks are all based on various power-ups that appear in Mario games. My current plan is to have Toad lead and Toadette follow. When you press one of the special attack buttons, two item blocks appear over the Toads' heads. They'll jump up and grab the items that fall from the blocks, which would give them the new Power-up and alter their appearance. Pressing the B button without and directional input would cause them to use their powerups. Pressing with a directional input would switch them to the next power.
Standard Special: Rock Mushroom/Hammer Bros Suit - Toad turns into the giant stone ball from Super Mario Galaxy, Toadette dons the suit and hops on top. Toad rolls across the ground slowly and Toadette throws hammers into the air.
Side Special: Ice Flower/Boomerang Flower - Toad launches an iceball forward and Toadette throws a Boomerang in between. The iceball would temporarily freeze the opponent. The Boomerang would shatter the ice block, damaging the opponent.
Down Special Tanooki Suit/Blue Koopa Shell - Toadette gains the Tanooki suit, which she would use to turn herself into a statue. (And become impervious to damage) Then Toad, wearing the blue Koopa shell, would launch forward. This attack has high potential to be dangerous to both the user and opponents, because Toad would bounce off obstacles. (including Toadette) Now imagine getting trapped between a wall and a stone Toadette. Yo' butt gon' be hurtin'. However, when Toadette is in statue form, she can be picked up and carried away. (having the same properties as a heavy crate) (except not full of items) Toadette could not revert to a non-stone form unless Toad was back with her. Don't get too far away from her, or you'll risk seeing her get tossed off a cliff.
Up Special: Propeller Mushroom/Spring Mushroom - Toad equips the silly looking propeller suit from NSMBW, and Toadette becomes encased in a spring like in Mario Galaxy. Toad would jump on her head and she'd bounce super high into the air, then he would activate his propeller and carry them even higher. This ability has its advantages and disadvantages, because you get some unreal air with both characters working together. But if Toadette is KO'd or you're already in the air (since you wouldn't have anything to spring off of), you're not going to get as much height. However, the initial jump of Toadette's spring would be a meteor smash, so you could use it to cause some serious damage to midair opponents.
