Ninian Doff is one of my favorite up-and-coming music video directors, creating an outstanding portfolio of work in just a couple short years. He was nice enough to answer a few questions for me about himself and some of his various projects. Click here to read the full interview.
How did you become involved with the music video industry?
Just started making music videos off my own back - self financed, was my own camera crew, did my own post production. “Staring Out The Window" and "Golden Tree" were made like that. Then they got people to be interested in me which led to becoming "professional" at it…
What filmmakers are your biggest inspirations?
For music videos the recent run of creative directors totally inspired me to fall in love with music videos again and want to make them. So by that I mean Daniels, Keith Schofield, MegaForce, Patrick Daughters… and probably a million other people I can’t think of right now. But these guys all started making music videos again which pushed visual ideas and techniques nearly always showing us an idea no one had thought of yet. When I first stared seeing their work it was electricity getting fired into my brain. One of my favourite reactions to a music video is “aaaah! Why has no one thought of doing that before!” Then like everyone on earth I was obsessed with the first Director Label DVDs when they first came out years ago (Gondry, Jonze, Cunningham).
What made you think of centering a video about crows with limbs?
Well it’s clearly about how medieval church elders (known as “Kräws” in ancient Norse) carried guns (i.e arms) to keep the peace…
Kidding! I was just sitting in the park eating a sandwich and started laughing at how crows walk! They walk different to other birds. They don’t hop and flutter but swagger around. Suddenly I noticed they looked like they should have arms and couldn’t stop laughing.
How did you direct the crows, or were all their movements random?
Threw shit loads of bread at them. Have tried this directing technique since with actors but with less successful results.

Graham Coxon “What’ll It Take”
This is one of the most interesting “crowdsourcing” videos I’ve seen. How did the idea come about?
Well the commissioner Oliver Hammerton suggested crowd sourcing as the lyrics invite that group participation. I was wary at first as there was a stage were there were A LOT of crowd sourced music videos and most not very inspired or creative (i.e a montage of people playing the song in their bedroom) or that simple approach had been done BRILLIANTLY already in Sour’s video. So it had to be something new and different to be worthwhile. Then I remembered an old silly video I’d made years ago for fun called Beast of Dance I suddenly thought about using that technique but with crowd sourced images and the whole idea came together really fast.
What was the process like of gathering and editing people’s footage?
Long, painful, exhausting and bad for my relationship with my girlfriend. Ha! I had about 3 weeks for take footage from 90 fans and make the video. I was the entire post production team on this. It was worth it though…

JJ DOOM “Guv’nor”
How did you develop the unique split-screen look for this video? How was the effect accomplished?
No idea how the idea came about. Just… did! Just came into my head whilst cycling round. There’s no logic to when an idea forms.
I’ve recently decided to stop giving away details on how it was made as its been really interesting having people not fully understand it! I never expected that as it seems obvious to me, but then a magic trick seems obvious a magician doing the trick. So if it confused you and made you brain hurt I am delighted and will leave it at that.
I noticed DOOM's mask plays a big part in how the effect works. Was that planned when you were conceptualizing the video?
Sort of. It’s a great solid link so it really holds it together. But the original plan was to have human faces linked in the video too (but that fell through last minute).

Darwin Deez “Free (The Editorial Me)”
This video gets compared a lot to Groundhog Day on the internet, how do you think this time-loop differs from the one portrayed in that film?
Well loads I guess! Groundhog Day is 24 hours repeating. This is roughly 4 seconds repeating forever. It means it’s far more limited and frustrating for the protagonist who becomes self aware of the loop. Bill Murray could still have fun, seduce women, learn the piano, rob banks. Darwin Deez can only stock a cereal box on a shelf before the loop starts again! So I guess it’s a way bigger nightmare in that respect.
How many variations of the initial scene (the girl spilling the coffee, for example) did you shoot?
If you pay super close attention to the women spilling coffee you’ll notice nothing ever changes. It’s the exact same bit of footage from every angle. So you might be surprised to learn she only spilt the coffee 3 times on the shoot. 3rd take was the keeper.
It seems that whenever Darwin Deez escapes from the time-loop he creates a clone of himself. So is this universe filled with infinite Darwin clones? Or when he goes outside is he just entering another time-loop?
Yes! Love that you’ve been thinking it through as I can finally spout my massively pretentious theory:
We’re all living in loops (in the video universe that is). The less “free” you are (i,e living the life you want) the more frustrating and tiny the loop. As you become self aware you break out of it and into a slightly larger loop (Darwin outside the shop on a bike) this will however keep looping until Darwin actively does the next action to being truly happy and self fulfilled (e.g. goes into a guitar shop). Slowly, as he gets more and more fulfilled the loop keeps getting longer until it’s length of an entire lifetime and therefor not a loop.
DEEP HUH!
