As geopolitical tensions in West Asia continue to affect global energy markets and economic stability, political reactions in India have intensified. Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Monday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his recent appeal urging citizens to adopt austerity measures to tackle global disruptions.

The criticism came a day after the Prime Minister encouraged people to reduce fuel consumption, avoid unnecessary foreign travel, use public transport such as the Metro, and conserve resources in order to protect India’s foreign exchange reserves during uncertain international conditions.

Rahul Gandhi Calls PM’s Appeal “Proof of Failure”

In a strongly worded post on X, Rahul Gandhi claimed that the government’s recommendations reflected an inability to manage the country’s economic and foreign policy challenges effectively.

According to Gandhi, the Prime Minister’s suggestions — including cutting down on petrol usage, limiting purchases of gold, reducing cooking oil and fertilizer consumption, travelling less abroad, and working from home — were not precautionary advisories but “proofs of failure.”

He alleged that after more than a decade in power, the government had reached a stage where ordinary citizens were being instructed on how to spend, travel, and consume essential goods.

Gandhi further accused the Centre of transferring responsibility to the public instead of addressing policy shortcomings directly. He said the government repeatedly expects citizens to bear the burden during economic or geopolitical crises while avoiding accountability at the leadership level.

Political Debate Over India’s Foreign Policy

The Congress MP has repeatedly criticised the Modi government’s foreign policy approach in recent months. He has alleged that the Prime Minister is under international pressure, particularly from the United States, regarding trade negotiations and strategic matters.

Rahul Gandhi also referred to the India-US trade agreement debate, claiming the Prime Minister had compromised India’s interests under external pressure. In previous statements, he linked these allegations to legal developments involving Indian businessman Gautam Adani in the United States and discussions surrounding the Epstein case.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), however, has consistently rejected these allegations, defending the government’s foreign policy decisions as necessary for economic stability and national interest.

Why PM Modi Suggested Resource Conservation

Prime Minister Modi’s appeal comes at a time when global oil prices and supply chains remain vulnerable due to instability in West Asia. Rising geopolitical tensions often impact petroleum imports, inflation, transportation costs, and foreign exchange reserves for energy-dependent countries like India.

Experts believe governments typically encourage energy conservation and controlled spending during periods of global uncertainty to reduce economic pressure and strengthen domestic resilience.

The Prime Minister’s message focused on collective participation and responsible consumption as precautionary measures rather than mandatory restrictions. The government has not announced any formal curbs on travel, fuel purchases, or consumer spending.

Opposition vs Government Narrative

The latest exchange reflects the growing political divide between the BJP-led government and the Congress party ahead of future electoral battles. While the government frames its appeal as a call for national preparedness during international instability, the opposition views it as a sign of economic stress and governance challenges.

Political analysts note that economic concerns, inflation, fuel prices, and India’s diplomatic positioning are likely to remain central issues in national political discourse over the coming months.
