Life, Interrupted (Call, Disconnected) || Free Verse Poetry
The call came at three a.m They said to come to the hospital fast I said, why? And they said, You. They said there was an accident They said you were on your bike They said to come quickly They said you might not live through the night They said please don’t cry They said, they said, they said But all I heard was what you said I love you.
I’ll see you soon.
Hours ago Four if I’m to be exact Four hours thirty six minutes and twenty-five – twenty-six seconds You called and said those words I love you.
I’ll see you soon.
Every night Without fail You promised me You’ve always kept your promise All through high school and college And asshole bosses You kept your promise I’ll see you soon. Why break it now Why
I can almost pretend If the hospital were our bedroom And it’s bed our own That it’s Sunday morning And I’ve got early call But you don’t have to be up til eight. And I could give you a kiss Butterfly kisses And wait for you to wake But I know From the way you lie now You’re no longer a butterfly But a moth It’s not sleep you lie in For you lie like a corpse. Lie lie lie. You said you’d never lie to me I love you. I’ll see you soon.
You said you’d never lie to me So why. Sometimes all the time I pick up the phone One, two, three times The line is dead, like mosquitoes ringing in my ear But still it’s your voice I hear I love you.
I’ll see you soon.
But it’s grainy Like it’s thirty years old and covered in dust Black and white photographs Fuzzy with time But you’re not thirty You’re twenty-four And your smile I still see it clear as day But your voice…? I can’t. What’s wrong with me? I’m scared I don’t want to forget. I don’t want to forget.
A pistol sits in the drawer every night. You never knew it was there I did. I didn’t take it out though Because you were here I’ll see you in the morning, I’ll see you soon The night wasn’t so terrifying then. But now? You’re gone. Yet everywhere at the same time. And the night scares me more than ever.
Your clothes are scattered across the floor Letters addressed to you lie unopened on the table That’s not enough It’s still a lie.
I love you. I don’t want the things you own. I want you.
I’ll see you soon.
I try not to take it out But I might It’s the tide after all Strong and powerful, And I’m nothing but the leaky sea wall. You called me marble, you called me stone But I am not strong Maybe tonight, Maybe tomorrow, But not forever. I love you.
I’ll see you soon.
It’s a chant A mantra A replay of a game that just won’t stop Seven words Seven rounds You only need one to die Lies lies lies So many lies You promised not to lie I look at the pistol Trace imaginary lines into it’s lifeless side Metal is deadly I drop it. A cold brand upon my face Arms splayed Like Jesus upon his cross Do I want this? No, not just yet. I pull myself up People tell me to fight But I’m not sure I want to.
Maybe it’s time to let you go they say No I won’t Never. Place the muzzle against my throat Let it lick my skin with it’s fiery tongue Like cold brushes of death Fear Sparks Surging forward Faster and faster Up my spine to my brain The control centre But it doesn’t work Not anymore Hasn’t since that day Yesterday Or was it last week Last year I feel numb. Except when I love you.
I’ll see you soon.
You said you’d never lie to me I love you.
I’ll see you soon.
You said you’d never lie to me. And I won’t make a liar out of you.
