2016
What I learned in twenty sixteen is that domestic violence does not matter unless you make more than six hundred thousand dollars a year. That rape is not rape if the victim did not scream. And that being brave enough to share your story is begging for attention. I learned that high school friends really aren't friends, and that everybody will be there needing you until you need them. In twenty sixteen I learned that suppressing the pain of the past only makes it harder to face in the future. I learned that friends that jump off bridges don't come back and I learned that seeing that friend in a casket is equivalent to a thousand knives in your heart. In twenty sixteen I learned that when boys find out about your past, an innocent hello will be "send nudes" three days later. I learned that I am not difficult to love, I am just difficult to understand. In twenty sixteen I learned that alcohol will not cover up the pain long enough before you start to throw it up and I learned that people only get you drunk so they can use you like the last one did. In twenty sixteen I lost all hope for myself and I learned that you can go to eighteen doctors and still not know what's wrong with you. I learned that counselors don't stop the pain. But after all of this I learned that you can meet someone after the thousandth time of being let down, and have them pick up your pieces and put you back together. I learned that I'm difficult to put back together. I learned that it's possible to love someone with your whole self and not be destructed by it. I learned this year that even when you hate yourself for what you've been through, someone will love you and hold you together even when they do not understand either. I learned that I am not a victim, I am a survivor. And no I am not asking for attention.
2015 in Summary
I jumped out of a perfectly good airplane and LIVED. Not as in survived, but felt like I properly LIVED.
I traveled back home to the states. I left sunny Melbourne to go to a winter snow storm in Virginia. Good call Corey!
I met my best friend’s baby. Whaaaat? Firstly, that she had a baby, and secondly that I got to make a new friend in the human she created. Still mind blown.
I made my first dream catcher, thanks to my KELS :)
I finally watched “Reality Bites”. LOVE. The movie, Winona, Ethan, the 90s, floral dresses.
I went bathing in natural hot springs.
I got drunk and sang...on stage...in front of strangers...several times.
I ate raw octopus.
I took a lot of pictures in photo booths :) this particular one makes me extremely happy
I made about 600 jello shots.
I FINALLY got a record player and have started my vinyl collection.
I got to show my Mom & Sissy around Australia! Having my family here was kind of the best thing ever.
Went snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef.
My family & Jason’s family got to meet! They were in the same room and they liked each other! yessssss
THE NEW STAR WARS MOVIE CAME OUT. & ITS AWESOME.
I bought a one piece swimsuit. ha
My puppy got really sick and had to lose an eye. But he is my favorite pirate now....get outta here Johnny Depp.
Three of my friends since childhood got engaged.
My baby brother turned 18 years old...& that’s just weird.
I was able to see all the wonders of the Great Ocean Road for a second time!
Marty McFly got to visit.
I worked a lot, and hard.
I got a couple new tattoos....some of which my family now shares hehe
I got to kiss Jason, a lot.
& all those little beautiful moments that seemed to have no significance at the time, that fill in the gaps between milestones, and make up another year past.
My New Years Realization.
Every year on the 31st of December, people look back and think about what they can change about the future. Instead, I’m looking back at what I’ve learned this year.
Never underestimate the importance of family. It may not include everyone, but those you are close to, treasure.
I thought New Years was all about getting smashed with your friends and hoping to get that midnight kiss. In reality? I’ve just had the most incredible New Year’s Eve and it was spent on the sofa with my dad, uncle and brother - the most important men in my life - playing charades and drinking wine.
A valuable lesson I’ve learned this year: keep your friends close, and your family even closer.
