Ok ok ok, I was thinking about Allumos's ability to 'haunt' a single person of its choosing (typically the guild leader) and I wanted to add some sense to it.
There is an incantation — incredibly old, so old it's written in Old Leo's Tongue — that the guild leader of Grimshade can cast that will allow Allumos to access the Mortal Plane in Spirit form. This spell is ONLY cast when the guild leader is in need of great guidance or help; It's a kind of precursor to the full on possession that was going to happen to Mael until, well, Pádraig came along.
Mael, facing everything that was happening in s4, decided to try use the spell to seek help from the First Grimshade Guild Master. However, when he performed it, it seemed like nothing had happened. Frustrated, Mael assumed he had cast it wrong — he barely spoke his native Tongue, he surely couldn't be expected to speak that language fluidly — and went back to the Guild Hall to figure something else out.
