Power Dynamics from Maternal Instincts
This episode is one of my favorites in the series.
For several reasons of course, but overall it has some of my most adored scenes and character moments. 'Back off, she's a minor!' is a legendary quote from that ep.
But! My absolute favorite part is from the big picture idea we get of how Danny, Vlad, and Maddie act when they're in a room together.
If there's anything I'm a huge fan of in the badger cereal realm it's the little taste we get of this dynamic because it elevates the intrigue playing behind the scenes between these three. I go nuts when their dynamic is the focus in fic too. Specifically ones where Vlad does something to get both Danny and Maddie in the same place and supposedly under his thumb.
I say 'supposedly' here because, in order to illustrate this in the simplest way possible:
Basically, each of them has a unique way of getting the person they have power over to do something for them.
Vlad's got his superiority as the more experienced half-ghost in order to threaten Danny. There could also be a lot of normal blackmailing threats towards him too (ie, threaten his friends and other family members in order to make Danny do what he wants).
Danny is able to subtly ask Maddie to help him go behind Vlad's back, if he wanted to, or keep her from hanging out with Vlad (Mamma's boy!). This is best exemplified when he goes to hug his mom to grab the key for the Specter Deflector. He's got to be a little manipulative shit too when he's dealing with Vlad as his enemy.
And then there's Maddie, who is not below taking advantage of Vlad's softness to her in order to either protect Danny from him or advance in a plan to get the both of them out from the situation Vlad would have put them in. This would especially be true and go into hyperdrive if she knows the extent of Vlad's ulterior motives when it comes to what he wants out of her and her son.
Regarding the little information war they create:
Maddie does not know Danny is Phantom. This is probably the ideal situation in order to get out from any situation Vlad puts them in. If she finds out, she'd probably be on a very dangerous warpath afterwards and risk being less tactical about dealing with Plasmius. Still, Maddie eventually finding out is still Maddie and Danny's best win condition tbh.
Initially, Danny sees Maddie as her ally (as Phantom) but this is probably not the case the other way around. Seeing Phantom and Plasmius interact in a bad way would probably not bother her.
Vlad knows he can get Maddie to do the things he wants if he gets Danny to push her towards him. It's much harder for him to accomplish getting Maddie this way because of how self-destructive Danny is and how he'd probably offer his obedience up first before selling out his mom for his own safety. Vlad might actually have to use the carrot instead of the stick in these cases.
Danny knowing Vlad's true motives is huge but he can't easily tell Maddie. Giving any information would probably be hinting enough for her to figure out his secret (or endanger his other friends and family, if Vlad blackmails him). Which is the absolute last thing Danny will do in any situation. The best he can do is push his mom away, from not just Vlad but him as well. Which. Will probably negatively impact their relationship and thus is a very hard balance for Danny to keep.
Maddie knowing as much as she does on ghosts is also a big advantage. We also know that when she's not with Jack she can still be insanely efficient on her own (Public Enemies, MoAT). Neither Danny or Vlad would see her coming if she got access to ghost hunting tech.
I could probably keep going but that's the gist of it. I love seeing the three of them featured in fic because the possibilities are endless when it comes to the secrets, intrigue, and plans they can make to pull one over on Vlad.
