For two days, Chuuya lived from one training session to the next, pushing himself to the limit until his vision began to blur. For two days, he barely ate anything. For three nights in a row, he had heavy dreams. He stopped running in the mornings. During that time, Chuuya didn’t set foot in the hospital once. Yet, rays of light did manage to break through this utter nightmare. He and Yuan went for a long walk along the promenade. Together, they made up with Buichiro. The three of them went to school to find out their exam results—Chuuya had achieved almost top marks in every subject this term. If he kept it up, he’d be able to get into any university in the country. … During their last meeting at a joint training session, Atsushi tearfully apologised for shouting at him on that fateful day—well, perhaps it wasn’t the happiest memory to recall, and Chuuya didn’t need his apologies anyway. Today, on the third day, the sports centre was closed for New Year’s Eve. However, as it began to get dark, Chuuya, Mori, Kouyou, Kyouka, Atsushi and Ryunosuke met at the entrance, dressed in kimonos and warm outerwear, wearing fabric surgical masks, and slowly made their way towards the nearest Buddhist temple.
